VERY RARE 1836 PRINT FROM A JOURNEY TO BRAZIL BY VJ BRODTMANN AFTER A DRAWING BY JOHANN MORITZ RUGEN
Vintage print circa 1820's drawn by johann moritz rugendas (born 1802, augsburg). He was a blessed painter and illustrator who went to brazil at age 19 drawing impressions for heinrich von langsdorf's brazilian expedition. He returned to europe in 1825 and returned to south america. This is plate which was included in a book of 40 of his drawings from 1836 entitled “das merkwuerdigste aus der malerischen reise in brasilien” (the most remarkable from the picturesque journey in brazil), printed by famed lithographer vj brodtmann. This piece is in a very expensive frame and beautifully rendered. It is entitled “neger u negerin aus bahia”. Expensive linen mat, with a solid wood back. This framing and matting job alone would be over $1,000. 15 x 18 framed.
