Half Round Bones not labeled but hand made by Harold Edgerton Donated to

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 23)

Half Round Bones not labeled but hand made by Harold Edgerton Donated to auction by Bob Edgerton. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Description by Bob Edgerton, "After the war (WWII) when my father came home from his night reconnaissance work in Europe, I was listening to the "Ted Mach Amateur Hour" on the radio and heard some rhythm that sounded like tap dancing. I asked my father if he knew what was happening. He said it was a bone player. He went to our basement where we had two power tools, a wood lathe and a band saw. He sawed out two pieces of wood and showed me how to play the bones. He had learned as a young person and nearly drove his parents crazy playing the bones around the house. I learned from him how to play the bones at least with the right hand. I have learned that excellent bone players like Percy Danforth and others usually play them in both hands at the same time doing different patterns in the different hands. My son, Eric, has learned to play the bones from me. We have yet to teach this skill to his son, Quinn. Women also are able to play bones. Originally bones were made from rib bones, but now are often made from birch, pine, ebony, ivory, or some boney material. My father made so many pairs over the years so that he could teach others how to play and give them a set of bones that he had made. I ended up with quite a collection which I am offering up to this auction."...more

Ethnic Double Flute from Bob Edgerton’s private collection Description by

Lot # 14 (Sale Order: 14 of 23)

Ethnic Double Flute from Bob Edgerton’s private collection Description by Bob Edgerton, “The flute collection is from my private collection.  I took up the recorder in 1953 when I was a freshman at the University of Rochester.  I used it to learn to read music, by not playing the recorder by ear, and only playing written notes from paper.  I learned to play all four of the common recorder sizes soprano ( G clef), alto (G clef), tenor (G Clef down a octave), and Bass ( F Clef).  I continued to play recorders until 1987 when I took up the cello. My interest in fipple flutes attracted these ethnic instruments into my life.  The one flute that is a little different is the end blown shakuhachi style Flute from Argentina that my son gave me as a souvenir of his trip to the Antarctic.  It is a real musical flute but is challenging to get it to sound.  He purchased it from the artist that had made it and heard him play it very successfully. I have not been able to get it to speak.  Therefore it is appearing in this auction.”...more

Double Ocarina from Mexico from Bob Edgerton’s private collection Descript

Lot # 16 (Sale Order: 16 of 23)

Double Ocarina from Mexico from Bob Edgerton’s private collection Description by Bob Edgerton, “The ocarina was given to me a student of mine at the Roeper School.  He had been on a family trip to Mexico.  It had become broken so I fixed it with some material that was either epoxy or clay.  It does play on both sides making a duet possible.  It has a charming figure worked into the design.”...more
