Rare Fox Toy SxS Shotgun

Lot # 441 (Sale Order: 441 of 786)

Rare Fox Toy Side-by-Side Shotgun, dating from the mid-1920s. In 1925 Clarence Godshalk decided that the sons and daughters of sportsmen were a previously untapped market and that designing a toy version of the Fox gun might later on help future sales. What they came up with was approx. 29'' in length with stamped parts, two triggers, and buttstock cut from poplar. Some guns even came with a toy trunk or leg o'mutton case. Later, in the 1930s, a decal was applied to the stock. This particular example is stamped to the bottom of the frame ''A.H. Fox Gun Co./Phila. PA USA'', ''Pats Pend on Gun and Shell''. Some factory literature lists it as the ''Fox Play Gun'', and others as the ''Fox Toy Gun''. Regardless of the factory literature verbiage, the next line to both is ''Finest Toy Gun in the World''. Condition is very good retaining approx. 70% of the original black paint. Stock with scuffs and scratches and losses to original finish. Good opening action and working triggers. Seldom seen today in any condition. Est.: $300-$500....more
