PHENOMENAL BOWLERS AUTOMATON.

Lot # 3553 (Sale Order: 583 of 686)

Though an American made machine this fascinating feat of engineering takes Swiss precision to a new level. Patented in 1907 by Otto Eichenberger of Switzerland with the assistance of Leon Brock of New York, this intricate and large automaton with a vast number of actions centers on a most popular past time of the early 20th Century. The machine consists of two bisque headed gents, one poised to roll one of several steel balls down the alley to an array of nickel-plated skittle pins at the other end while the other enjoying his pipe looks on. A third bisque headed figure appears to reset the pins while returning the balls to the bowler. Beneath the "stage" is a complex motor and a throng of mechanics to power the various motions. Once displayed at the AMF Corp, the leading American Bowling Industry Company. Housed within a glass and carved/etched dome-top wood cabinet with great patina that only adds to the stunning presence of this piece. Accompanied by a framed and matted five panel display of old copies of the patent office diagrams and highly detailed description/spec sheet for this machine. SIZE: 43" l x 22" h x 14-1/2" d. CONDITION: Overall very good. Case may be missing a couple of small trim pieces. Mechanics are functional but may need minor adjustments to work perfectly. 1-14007

KING BEE UPRIGHT SLOT MACHINE.

Lot # 3554 (Sale Order: 584 of 686)

An unusually large machine approximately 6 feet tall with a gallery about the top of the machine. The oak cabinet is simplistic in nature with minimal electroplated iron castings and a large color wheel with a mirrored center section. An oddity of this machine is that when a coin or multiple coins are deposited one literally pulls the handle upwards from a 6 o'clock position to a 9 o'clock position. Most machines have a handle that you push down into the 12 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position. Perhaps the earliest of all the mechanical upright "color wheel" pay out slot machines, it is purported that Mills worked for McDonald for a short time before heading off on his own and forming his own company. Manufactured by McDonald in the late 1800s, it features a very unique and interesting mechanism. Unusual in the fact that one could play 7 coins, normally only 5 or 6. The method in which the wheel is activated and spins is quite different than all of the subsequent upright machines manufactured by various makers. When a coin is deposited and the mechanism activated a centrifugal type mechanism is activated and the wheel starts to spin slowly and continually speeds up and then slows down before the payout fingers engage into the wooden color wheel. If a coin is played on the winning color, the payout finger is then literally pulled down by 1/4 of an inch and tripping the payout coin way escalator and the winnings drop into a pay cup at the bottom of the right side of the machine. There was a runway a.k.a. escalator which held 50+ coins and thus even today always allowing the correct number of coins to be dispensed for a winning play. A very simplistic mechanism and totally different than any subsequent upright machines manufactured by various makers of the time period. SIZE: 70" t x 27" w x 13" d. CONDITION: Machine was restored some 30+ years ago and has mellowed out and has a wonderful overall appearance. In excellent working condition. Upon close examination a small decorative piece of wood trim is missing from the upper right corner. 1-14172

MILLS WIZARD FORTUNE TELLER.

Lot # 3555 (Sale Order: 585 of 686)

A visually attractive arcade machine manufactured by Mills in the 1920s-1930s time period. The earlier version of this machine was simplistic in nature with a wooden front but in order to attract prospective players Mills redesigned the front employing a fanciful, large aluminum cabinet with a wizard, a pedestal with a flaming urn and a bevy of decorative symbols, people, etc. A card on the front of the machine asks a series of questions and one would choose a question moving the lever about to said question. A coin deposited and the lever on the side engaged magically your answer would appear in the window. The front casting is enameled in various colors to attract potential players and the cabinet itself is constructed of wood with a light finish. The mechanism is simplistic in nature and originally sold with 6 different cards and interior wheels which could be easily changed by the operator/owner. Machine is completely original and still retains the directions for changing fortune reel on the inside of back door. A great coin-op piece that is highly sought after, especially today when collectors are looking for pieces that are in all original, untouched condition! SIZE: 14" w x 18-1/2" t. CONDITION: Very fine all original condition. A light cleaning to the painted aluminum front casting and the wooden finish would certainly enhance the overall appeal of this coin-op device. 1-14259

TABLETOP CAST IRON CLAMSHELL MUTOSCOPE.

Lot # 3556 (Sale Order: 586 of 686)

A visually attractive machine produced by the Mutoscope company during the early part of the 20th century. These coin-operated devices became a virtual goldmine for the operator. With little effort and little time, one could change the reel card to a new and exciting show. These machines were popular in arcades and other locations as well. It's hard to believe some of these machines are still in use today. Virtually indestructible and perhaps needing only a die cast worm gear or other small mechanical part, these machines could work until the end of time. This example has had some older restoration to the paint and currently Felix the Cat is available for your entertainment. Side door has new lock, which is not important. Original cash box within and the big plus is there appears to be no damage to the iron castings. An added feature and sometimes found is a lighted marquee, which also gives additional light by means of an opaque glass panel atop the machine. Mechanics are functioning by means of a nickel and coin mechanism appears to be complete. However, some minor adjustment can or should be made. The Felix reel bundle appears to be original and in very good condition. SIZE: 49" h (including marquee). CONDITION: Older restoration as stated above. 1-13752

CHESTER POLLARD COIN-OPERATED "PLAY FOOTBALL" GAME.

Lot # 3557 (Sale Order: 587 of 686)

A great coin-op piece often found in arcades from the 1920s-40s. Charging only a nickel, two people would control their respective teams and play a simulated game of soccer/football. Lifelike actions with kicking and moving figures as well as the frustration your opponent would feel when you scored against them. These American made machines were quite popular arcade and amusement park attractions and were heavily used. They yielded the operator a significant return on investment, which at a cost of $550 in 1926 was quite a hefty sum. As in this case, oftentimes the oak cabinetry was repainted to freshen it up for the following seasons. Machine appears to be a good solid example, but in need of some mechanical as well as cosmetic attention if one were inclined to do so. SIZE: 73" h x 28" d x 46" w. CONDITION: Coin entry area appears complete, but in need of a cover plate so as not to expose the interior mechanism. Retains original marquee with paper insert. Players would benefit from a freshening of uniforms. 1-13931

EXHIBIT SUPPLY GRANDFATHERS CLOCK STRENGTH TESTER.

Lot # 3558 (Sale Order: 588 of 686)

At virtually every arcade and other locations one would find strength testing machines, most often to compare your strength against other individuals. Strength machines were manufactured by numerous companies that also produced other coin-operated machines. This particular model most likely originally manufactured in the 1920s was large, impressive, and rang a bell when certain levels of strength were reached. When one engaged in play with this particular device, the bell would ring, putting a smile on the face of the user as well as onlookers, encouraging them to participate as well. Obviously one would put only one coin in and walk away. They would even compete against themselves trying to beat their own previous level. When one deposited a coin and squeezing the handle, the pendulum would swing and the indicator hand would travel clockwise around the dial. One would then listen to how many times the bell rang. The stronger the grip, the more times the bell would ring. Clock dial appears to be original and internal background paper was more than likely changed/updated on a regular basis. Directions appear to be of older vintage. SIZE: 22" w x 22" d x 75" h. CONDITION: Currently machine is on free-play, most likely a minor adjustment is needed. Lacking simple wooden back door. Side access door is a replacement. It appears that at some point in time someone was attempting to refinish the wood surface and it looks like the wood was stripped down and is ready for a new finish. Overall a neat and impressive machine in need of a little cosmetic attention. 1-13753

MILLS "CAILLOSCOPE" DROP CARD VIEWING MACHINE.

Lot # 3559 (Sale Order: 589 of 686)

During the teens through the 1930s, Mills manufactured a number of drop card machines, which today are still in use in many arcades including Knott's Berry Farm, Hershey Park, and Disneyland to name a few. This particular machine is a somewhat fancier version with an elaborate iron casting, which when opened would allow the operator to retrieve the day's receipts. Similar to a music box, it has a large clockwork style mechanism contained within the cabinet. When a penny is deposited, one could view approximately 10-15 stereoview cards. Cards could easily be changed as well as the marquee to reflect the current show so as always to maintain repeat customers waiting to see the newest show. Of course one coin never got you the whole story and many coins were needed to see the complete show. This particular machine has an old west theme featuring a couple cowboys. A most visually attractive machine including carved wooden legs (not original to machine) and cast iron owl handles. SIZE: 74" h to top of marquee x 20" w x 17" d. CONDITION: Overall in as found, operational "park" condition. Lacking keys for locks on front section of machine. 1-13749

PHENOMENAL THREE-DIMENSIONAL LEADED GLASS SHOE STORE TRADE SIGN.

Lot # 3568 (Sale Order: 598 of 686)

On occasion a fabulous piece of any nature comes to the market, having been tucked away for perhaps 50, 80, or even 100 years. Oftentimes, there is no provenance or history attached to said item. But on rare occurrence, this information comes to light along with the extraordinary piece itself. Please read below the history of the shoe's origins as well as view the accompanying photo showing the former location of the sign in the present day. Unfortunately we were unable to secure a photo of the shoe in use during the time period. Adolph Schauder emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1893. He settled in the northern Wisconsin town of Rhinelander. Adolph brought nothing with him other than leather so he could reestablish himself as a shoemaker and provide for his family. He was able to purchase a two story building in downtown Rhinelander on Brown Street. His shop was on street level and the family living quarters were directly above. Four generations continued this business until it was closed in 1989 having operated for 96 years. There were no heirs to inherit and continue the business. It is not exactly clear when Adolph had this incredible trade sign created, but we have been told by family members that it was created and put in place in the earliest part of the 20th century. At some point, the shoe was taken down from its outside display area and relegated to the basement. A family member recalls that often on the Fourth of July, the shoe would make an appearance in the town parade with family members strapping it to the roof of the car for all to see and remember. After the shoe store closed, the new owner of the building held an auction to dispose of various items left in the building. The consignor of this item attended the public auction at the shoe store's location and was stunned to see this fabulous item that was never even mentioned in the auction flyer. Due to age and the wish to downsize, they have decided to liquidate and consolidate their various treasures. At first appearance, one thinks of this as a boot, but in reality, it was designed as a shoe and the white glass actually simulates a spat. The lettering "S&S" is done in burgundy glass and was perhaps meant to represent Schauder & Son. The heel of the shoe is actually a tin surround with an opening at the bottom. The top of the shoe has a covering and most likely at one point had an electrical fixture to light up the shoe. A hole on the underside of the shoe would allow for easy access to change the light bulb. Although the actual glass pieces have not been counted, it must easily be in excess of a few hundred pieces. As one would expect, there have probably been some aged repairs to some of the leading and glass tiles, but the piece is firm, solid and intact. The shoe itself utilized amber colored glass to simulate leather and as previously discussed, the spat is a creamy white with the burgundy S&S lettering. The toe area of the shoe employs a different style of glass being of a green color. Truly an amazing and most important folk art trade sign to come fresh to the market and undoubtedly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of this magnitude. SIZE: 25-1/2" h x 36" l x 12-1/2" w. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14108
