Boaz Vaadia (Israeli/American, b. 1951) incorporates material from the New York City environment, slate, shingle, bluestone and boulders, to create figural sculptures with universal features. His materials, particularly the blue stone and slate formed from layers of compressed sediment, are carved to expose each stratified layer. Relying on the weight of the stone, Vaadia’s figures connect with nature to harness powers inherent in their materials. Each sculpture evokes an existential meditation on the progress of civilization and our human relationship with the environment. Vaadia’s statement says, “Man came from the earth and in death returns to it. I see stone as the bone structure of the earth.”

Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics (Minneapolis, MN: Walker Art Center, 1997), p. 54 (another from the edition illustrated).

Property from the Estate of Dr. Ziviello

I met Dr.and Mrs. Alfred Ziviello about 30 years ago, when they stopped by old gallery on 74th Street and Madison in search of Americana. They had been in the area viewing the galleries and had their eye on a work by Calder. I loved the fact that the Doctor was a collector of a wide range of items with one common theme– Quality. Because he was an excellent surgeon, he was more observant of details than the average person. Mrs. Ziviello is a great cook and I truly looked forward to visits at their home, to discuss a wide range of subjects….usually centering around art! On a fishing trip Montauk together with his son David, just hearing his description of the physiology of the large shark that I had caught—before I released it—was impressive! The tuna caught that day was carved up for dinner by the only one truly qualified—the surgeon, Dr. Ziviello.

They purchased many fine examples of early American antiques and used this same discriminating eye to build an equally well-chosen collection of contemporary art most of it purchased from the respected Madison Avenue dealer, Jane Kahan. Works by Henry Moore, Picasso, and Calder were scattered throughout the home and passionately enjoyed by the couple. I visited with Dr. and Mrs. Ziviello shortly before his untimely passing in January, 2014 and we discussed the fact that he would like to sell his modern collection at Keno Auctions with conservative pre-sale auction estimates.

Keno Auctions is honored to offer some exemplary examples of Modern and Contemporary art by artists Frank Stella (lot 7), Sam Francis (lot 8) Alexander Calder (lot 9), Pablo Picasso (lot 39-41), Marc Chagall (lot38) and Martha Walter (lot 43).

Attributed to Franz Kline, “Five drawings in a series”

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 10 of 48)

“Five drawings in a series”
reddish-brown crayon on paper
10 3/4 x 8 1/2 in. (sight, each sheet)

Kline began to explore abstraction in the late 1940s. In this study the viewer can “read” his process, from figurative, to abstract, then back to figurative. The central, most-abstract drawing in the series, individually retains the feeling of movement derived from the car headlight and train nose.

In 1950, Kline painted an abstraction of a train that ran through his hometown in Philadelphia. This painting, Chief, is now on display at MoMA. Kline made several preparatory sketches before painting his abstractions, and this drawing falls into that genre of study drawings. Trains and cars inspired Kline whose paintings, though non-representational, still evoke movement, machinery and industry.

In 2012 the Franz Kline exhibition, Coal and Steel at the Allentown Museum of Art, included works from this early period in Kline’s career. Kline used the urban industrial landscape of Philadelphia create abstract motifs such as the car/train sequence above.

Provenance: Purchased from Franz Kline by Robert and Andrea Bollt, c. 1958; Property from the Estate of Andrea Bollt, Stair Auctioneers and Appraisers, 7 December 2013, lot 157: Private New York Collection

Dimensions: 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 in. (sight, each sheet)

Untitled, Spiral Cufflinks, c. 1955 silver
H. 0.5 in.; W. 0.6 in.; D. 0.5 in. (each)

In 1955, John and Sally Freeman celebrated his 27th birthday with a party at the so-called Bowling Alley, built into the hillside behind the Glyndor house at Wave Hill, where they lived through the 1950s (please see below).

Among the guests were Alexander and Louisa Calder, whom John and Sally had known since Yale days. Upon arrival, Calder offered his host a small, crumpled tissue-paper bundle holding a card marked “John / Hap B’day / Sandy” and a pair of coiled silver cufflinks. One of the things Calder first noticed, hanging at the end of the long living space, was the nearly nine-foot tall wire sculpture by Ruth Asawa (lot 18), which according to Mr. Freeman, was the first of her work he had seen.

Iron and brass wire
H. 103 in.; Diameter at base 21 in.

Provenance: Purchased by John W. Freeman at Ruth Asawa’s first solo exhibition, Peridot Gallery, Madison Ave., New York, NY, December 1954

Dimensions: H. 103 in.; Diameter at base 21 in

Condition: Please note: A treatment report from metal conservator Steve Tatti will accompany this lot. This includes photographs of the piece pre-conservation. The piece had been exposed to moisture while in storage in the attic of a building on the Freeman property. This caused rust to form on the surface of the steel and also oxidized the brass spheres within the lobes. This surface has not been treated; it has been left as is so that the surface is left un-molested. There were some losses to a small area of steel wire in the passage (the narrow neck) between the first and second lobes from the bottom, which have been patched with a pattern matching what was used on the work overall. The double-shpere within the second lobe had come dis-attached (please see pre-treatment photographs) and have been re-secured to the upper part of the second lobe from the bottom. A narrow passage of approximately four inches of woven brass wire is missing – which had been inside of the narrow neck of woven steel between the second and third lobes from the bottom. Minor dents and small losses. Please note that in order to maintain the integrity of the piece, the steel was not cut to repair the small section missing between the second and third lobes from the bottom. The small opening from looses in the steel wire between the bottom two lobes allowed the conservator to reach inside of the second lobe from the bottom to reattach the hanging brass double-sphere. Wire woven by Steve Tatti Conservation matching the missing section was then used to close the hole.

Gerhard Richter, Vermalung (Braun) or Inpainting (brown)

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 20 of 48)

Vermalung (Braun) or Inpainting (brown), 1972
oil on canvas
Signed and dated in oil on verso “Richter 72”
Inscribed in red oil on verso “23”
10 1?2 x 16 inches

One of the most important German artists of the post-World War II period, Gerhard Richter began his career apprenticing as an advertising and stage-set painter before studying at the Dresden Art Academy from 1951 to 1956. Following three years as a master class student at the Academy, Richter emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany, just two months before the Berlin Wall went up. From 1961 to 1963, he studied under Karl Otto Götz at the Duesseldorf Academy of Arts. In 1962, influenced by Giacometti and Dubuffet, he started with representational paintings based on photographs. His first solo exhibitions were held in 1964, in Munich and Duesseldorf. In 1967 Richter became guest lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, and in 1971 he was offered a chair at the Academy of Arts in Duesseldorf, which he held until 1996.

The Vermalung, or “inpaintings” series parallels Richter’s journey into abstraction. Many of these works might have started out as figurative images that the artist “painted into” to such a degree that the original figural representation is either partially or completely reworked. The painterly quality evident in this series relies on heavy impasto and thick brushstrokes to emphasize gesture over expression. Paintings done in Richter’s Vermalung technique are grey, red-blue-yellow or as the example here, brown.

Sori Yanagi, "Two Butterfly Stools"

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 23 of 48)

Manufactured by Tendo Co. Ltd., Mokko, Japan, c. 1956 rosewood plywood with brass fittings

The Butterfly Stool was Sori Yanagi’s best-known design. Yanagi was especially drawn to the idea of combining East and West in his designs. “Made from two identical molded plywood forms held together with a simple brass stretcher, the Butterfly stool embodies the perfect fusion of Japanese aesthetics and modern technology.” In addition, the stool unites a traditional form with plywood, a modern material. The stool reflects both the optimism of the industrial age and the lightness indicative of traditional Japanese design.
