Custom 1903 Sporter Magazine Rifle With Niedner Barrel

Lot # 376 (Sale Order: 376 of 711)

serial #1275953, 400 Niedner, 24" custom Niedner barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of the barreled action retain about 98% maker applied rust blue, the loss due to some light handling marks and light high edge and contact point wear. The bolt body is bright and shows a very fine random mottled burnishing while the bolt handle has been very nicely checkered in circular patterns on the top and bottom of the knob. The bottom metal shows a bit more wear, retaining perhaps 92%, with some minor scratches around the guard screw holes. The rifle's original DCM/armory-issue stock was used in the construction of the arm. Slightly deep comb flutes have been added, a hard rubber pistolgrip cap has been fitted and the stock has been coarsely checkered in a borderless pattern in area of grip and forearm. Additionally sling swivels have been added, the front-most hole from the original military swivel base neatly plugged at the time of the sporterizing. There is a small crack at the forend tip, it is tight, and the butt has been fitted with a heavy 1 1/4" Kick-Eez Sorbothane recoil pad (there is some damage along the left edge of the pad in the form of a torn-out piece which was then re-attached) giving a length of pull of 13 5/8". The rifle is sighted with a banded sporting front ramp with a sourdough style insert and a Lyman receiver sight in place on the rear bridge. While unmarked, the gun does not appear to have been sporterized by Niedner, merely barreled. The treatment of the bolt body and handle would suggest G&H work although the stock conversion is more rudimentary. The SRS "Summary of DCM Rifle Sales 1922-42" lists this gun by serial number as a "sporter", the underside of the barrel is Niedner-marked "1718" being a very late barrel, likely 1940, there are no initials. Nevertheless this is an outstanding large bore American caliber, and in this configuration, in a very affordable package. (36650-24) [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Rock Island Magazine Rifle By Wundhammer

Lot # 377 (Sale Order: 377 of 711)

serial #237333, 30-06, 24" 2-13 dated barrel with a bright very good plus bore which shows strong rifling but with some light frosting within the grooves. The barreled action retains about 95%, somewhat later, but still rather old blue while the receiver shows some smoky blue and flaked case-hardened gray, with some very sparsely scattered very light pinprick pitting. The bolt body is a dark gray-blue with remnants of some light oxidation or light pitting on the extractor and a scattered spot or two on the knob. The bottom metal is a dull gray-blue, appearing to be original maker-applied, with light scratches and handling marks. The gun is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a lovely grade of English walnut rating very good overall with much original varnish but with the overall dings and handling marks one would expect from a field-used arm. The wraparound checkering patterns are lovely with a delicate fleur-de-lis and very light flourish accents, the checkering somewhat flat top from years of field use. The rifle is equipped with swivel studs, a grooved buttplate providing a 13 1/8" length of pull, hard rubber gripcap, a nicely checkered trigger and the safety has been neatly metal-checkered as well; additionally the underside of the bolt has a very nicely checkered round panel and the tang of the action has been narrowed as Wundhammer was fond of. The gun is sighted with a Sheards style bead front sight in the original ramp and a longleaf Lyman receiver sight on the rear bridge. There is an additional hole, no doubt from a swivel stud, to the rear of the current front sling swivel. Originally this front swivel was affixed to a Wundhammer barrel band which is no longer present, it currently threads into a nut inletted on the underside of the forend tip; there is a small crack at the rear of the receiver tang, it is unobtrusive and certainly could be arrested if one wished. This arm is pictured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, volume 2. The trigger has been nicely tuned and the rifle is a lovely example of Wundhammer's work, showing some lovely grain in the butt. (36650-16) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Rock Island Magazine Rifle By Wundhammer

Lot # 378 (Sale Order: 378 of 711)

serial #161216, 30-06, 24" 12-09 dated barrel with an about excellent bore which shows strong rifling but with very minor frosting within the grooves. The barrel retains about 75% original blue, the loss due primarily to even fading with some toning to pewter on the high edges and contact points, especially the front sight band. The receiver shows excellent original mottled oil quenched case-hardening, the tang neatly narrowed as we see on Wundhammer's guns. The bolt shows light operational wear with striker and shroud showing good oil quenched case-hardening. The bottom metal is a mix of pewter patina and some fading original blue, the triggerguard's front extension stamped with the flaming bomb and "NRA". The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in an extremely nice grade of American black walnut and rates very good with much original varnish and overall minor dings and handling marks consistent with a field-used rifle. The checkered panels on the grip are somewhat coarse and feature mullered borders with a nice wrap-around pattern on the forend. There is a scant schnabel tip, hard rubber pistolgrip cap and a nice coarsely checkered buttplate giving a 13 1/2" length of pull. The magazine cut off has been grooved on its flat faces, as has the safety, the underside of the bolt knob is neatly checkered in a circular pattern and the face of the trigger shows nice checkering as well. The rifle is equipped with sling swivels and is sighted with a Sheard style bead atop the original 1903 sight bases with a Lyman long slide receiver sight in place on the rear ring; the left side of the receiver shows two drilled-and-tapped holes, perhaps for some now-absent scope mount. Really a fine example of these very seldom-encountered rifles by this early master, touted as the first man to sporterize a 1903 rifle. (36650-23) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom Mauser Magazine Sporting Rifle By Hoffman Arms

Lot # 379 (Sale Order: 379 of 711)

serial #91839 (Hoffman arms No. 437), 30-06, 22" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95% original rust blue, the loss is due to even fading and light high edge wear with some scattered very light oxidation. The bolt body and extractor remain bright with their nice mottled tiger stripe burnishing still vivid; the bolt is numbered "1810" at its root. The rifle is stocked classic style without cheekpiece in a very nice grade of English walnut. The stock itself rates about excellent with only scant minor handling marks from the years. It features a flawlessly executed wrap-over grip pattern with mullered borders with the forend showing a full wrap-around pattern of the same design. The stock features a nice bone forend tip, blued steel gripcap and a grooved steel buttplate giving a 13 3/8" length of pull. The action is numbered on its underside and the barrel is marked "SC 348". Interestingly there is a barrel band swivel in place but no provision on the stock for a rear swivel, the floorplate is hinged with inside-the-triggerguard release and the rifle has been fitted with a Timney Sportsman trigger. The gun is sighted with a nice sporting ramp front with stippled face and brass bead, its hood is also present; there is a Howe-Whelen bolt shroud sight in place on the rear of the bolt. The top of the barrel is appropriately marked "Hoffman Arms Co. Ardmore Okla No. 437" and the gun is pictured and discussed in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century. There is a small crack at the rear of the tang, it is tiny, and a bruise in the wood just behind it which does not impinge on the checkering. Really an extremely attractive and well-executed rifle with a very seldom-seen rear sight assembly; a lovely rifle. (36650-82) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Custom 1903 Springfield Magazine Sporting Rifle By Bob Owen

Lot # 380 (Sale Order: 380 of 711)

30-06, 22" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces retain about 95-97% original fading blue, the loss due to some light high edge wear but primarily even fading, with a minor ding or handling mark here and there from the years. The bolt body is still mostly bright, as is the bolt handle which shows a nicely checkered circumferential panel with floral engraving at the very end of the knob. The bottom metal shows quite a bit more loss, retaining perhaps 60% original blue, the balance fading to a dark gray and brown patina, the triggerguard bow slightly narrowed and sculpted. The rifle is stocked classic style with a rounded left side dual shadow line cheekpiece and rates very good plus with overall minor dings and handling marks from use afield. The grip shows nicely checkered panels with mullered borders which meet atop the wrist, the forend in a wrap-around pattern, with mullered borders, showing minor dings and flattened points from the years. The stock features a bone forend tip and blued steel gripcap which has faded to a brown patina, the length of pull to the grooved trap-door buttplate is 13 1/2", the plate nicely accented with light scroll. The sides of the stock are accented with tasteful relief-carved spear heads just ahead of the checkering pattern and there is an un-engraved silver monogram plate along the toeline. The rifle is sighted with a sporting ramp front with Lyman ivory bead blade insert, a lovely quarter rib with 3 folding leaf sights graduated for 200 yards, 300 yards, the last leaf being unmarked; the rib is nicely matted, the matting continuing onto the front ring; the rear receiver bridge holds a nice Lyman receiver sight. The receiver to the rear of the magazine cut off shows the nicely reduced conical style polishing Mr. Owens liked to do, the top of the receiver rear ring has been lightly flattened to allow for lower mounting of the rear sight bridge, the floorplate is hinged, the trigger has been finely checkered and case-hardened and the striker headless, ˆ la National Match style. The barrel ahead of the quarter rib is neatly stamped or engraved "RG Owen,". This gun is pictured in Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century. While a very lovely example of Mr. Owen's work, the arm shows just enough wear that one could take it afield once again and enjoy a vintage hunting rifle as it should be, amidst the woodlands in crisp November air; the trigger is wonderful. Springfield Research Service Summary of DCM Rifle Sales 1922-1942 lists this arm by serial number as a sporter, highly likely records will confirm it was shipped to G&H. Griffin and Howe, holder of the Abercrombie and Fitch records, show that in 1952 the rifle was consigned for sale at Abercrombie & Fitch by "Thomas H. White". In June of that year it was sold to sold to "W.J. Tracy" for $260; copies of these records can be ordered from Griffin and Howe. Really a very nice G&H rifle in a fine state of condition, with some very nice amenities and features, that likely still could be hunted while maintaining investment status. (36862-1) {C&R}

The barrels exhibit British nitro proofs for 1 1/8 ounce loads and are equipped with dual beads. The frame shows very nice vivid color case-hardening, toning only on the edges of the fences and the rounded portions of the belly. The gun features nice loose flowing scroll with foliate decoration on the belly of the frame. The right and left flats show pheasant and hunting dog motifs, the fences with foliate decoration, nicely matted along the top of the frame. Additionally the top lever shows some nice scroll and geometric decoration with a very nice scroll on the bow of the guard. The straight grip English walnut stock rates very good plus to excellent with minor dings and handling marks from the years. The checkering is nice with mullered borders and there are dropper points at the rear of the stock cheeks. The splinter style forend is in a similar state of condition with its hardware still exhibiting very nice color case-hardening. The length of pull to the Hawkins recoil pad is 13 1/2" with drops of 1 1/2" and 2"; the lower left and right leading edges of the stock show repaired chips, the left side appears to have the original chip re-affixed, the right side has had a piece very nicely spliced in. Lockup is tight with the top lever still slightly right of center and the gun seems to operate properly, the ejectors fitted very tightly to one another, occasionally one dragging the other up with it slightly upon ejection, it does not kick the shell out of the unfired barrel however; if the two are fired simultaneously they kick the shells robustly. Really a very lovely example overall in a very fine state of condition, Hoffman shotguns very rarely encountered. (36650-95) {C&R} [Michael Petrov Collection]

Hoffman Arms Company Boxlock Double Ejectorgun

Lot # 391 (Sale Order: 391 of 711)

serial #93372, 12 ga., 30" barrels choked about cylinder and full, with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain about 98% nicely restored rust blue with some minor fading, light scratches and handling marks, showing a few areas of water spotting and a couple spots of very light pinprick pitting. The right barrel is engraved "Made by Hoffman Arms Co No. 477" with the left tube engraved "Ardmore Okla 12 Gauge" with light geometric engraving on the breeches and on the rib extension; there is no wall thickness below .031" observed. The frame is now a dull pewter gray and is mostly smooth showing excellent quality scroll and foliate decoration around the hinge pin. There are game scene vignettes left and right of a dog and pheasant with the belly of the frame showing the same nice foliate and geometric borderline engraving, very Kornbrath-like. The top lever is nicely engraved as well and the tops of the fences are neatly matted, their sides showing a nice floral motif. The bow of the triggerguard shows nice quality loose scroll with geometric engraving on the long straight tang, there appears to be a repaired crack through the triggerguard tang screw hole. The straight grip English walnut buttstock rates about excellent as lightly, very professionally refinished, now reacquiring some minor dings and handling marks from light use, there are nicer dropper points at the rear of the stock flats; there is the beginning of a tiny crack on the left side of the safety, it is very small and not structural. The splinter style forend is in a similar state of condition and shows a couple minor dings along its sharp edges. The gun has had a spacer and NOSHOC recoil pad fitted, no doubt during the period of use, as they have quite a bit of age showing, the length of pull is 14 3/8 with drops of 1 3/8" and 2 1/4". Barrels and water table exhibit British proofs for ounce and 1/8 loads, the safety is automatic and the ejectors seem to work well. The gun locks up tightly but the lever seems to be at the end of its travel. Really an absolutely lovely Hoffman Arms-produced double ejectorgun with some very nice grain and superb engraving. This rifle is built on a single square bridge Mauser action with corresponding square flat on the breech of barrel at action. The metal surfaces of rifle retain 98% restored blue finish with all markings remaining clear and fully legible and with just a few scattered light pits beneath the finish. The checkered pistolrip walnut stock rates very good plus with about 90% original finish remaining. A quality oil refinish would help this gun as it appears to have been stored where there was too much moisture which has affected the stock finish, the checkering remains very crisp. The steel pistolgrip cap has a trapdoor which holds an extra front sight. The rifle is sighted with a hooded ramp mounted front and single standing and two folding leaf express rear with graduated for 100, 300 and 400 yards. The rifle is equipped with factory sling studs, the front on a barrel collar and the rear in the toeline of the stock. The rifle has a 14 1/2" pull over a leather covered solid red rubber pad. A little clean up by a competent gunsmith would bring this rifle cosmetically back to 100%, functionally it is already at 100%. A fine British magazine rifle. British Magazine Sporting Rifle By Charles Lancaster

Lot # 398 (Sale Order: 398 of 711)

serial #8714, 275 Mauser (7mm Mauser), 20" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This handsome rifle is in truly fantastic condition. The metal surfaces retain 98% restored satin blue finish with a light handling mark here or there and some minor wear on the bolt body and handle; the claw extractor and races are honed bright. The barrel is maker marked "CHARLES LANCASTER. 151 NEW BOND ST LONDON. W." along the top. The checkered round knob classic style English walnut buttstock features a nice horn forend tip, checkered panels at the grip with a wrap-around forearm pattern, all neatly chased with mullered borders; a shepard's crook style sling eyelet is mounted on the toe line with a matching stud soldered to the underside of the barrel. The stock rates excellent as refinished showing some minor scattered dings and blemishes. At some point, the wrist appears to have cracked completely through and shows two tiny cracks on either side of the lower tang and a single crack at the top of the wrist at the receiver. A small repaired oval section on the wrist indicates there is most likely a screw holding the wrist together; the wrist does not flex and has been effectively repaired. There is a small crack beginning at the rear of the upper tang, in a small squarish repair that likely replaced a missing chip or flake. The length of pull to the plain steel buttplate is 14 1/2". Featured is a tuned single trigger, bead front sight and 3 leaf express rear sight, one standing two folding with platinum index lines. This rifle is outfitted with a one piece receiver scope mount with a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2x scope with very good optics and post and crosshair reticle. Overall a beautiful British Mauser sporting rifle that would be sure to hold its own on the range or afield. (156520-2786) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]
