Militia Non-Com. Officer's Sword

Lot # 616 (Sale Order: 3 of 665)      

Militia Non-Commissioned Officer's Sword (1850-1870), 25-1/2'' blade with U.S. and patriotic motifs etched to lower third of blade; 32'' overall, horizontally fluted bone grip, brass cast pommel in the form of a stylized helmet facing downward, crossguard with shield-shaped langets bearing U.S. shield with 13 stars and 17 stripes. Black leather scabbard with brass throat and tip. This type sword was purchased by many of the more elite state militia organizations during the middle of the 19th Century. They are often seen in photographs from the early part of the Civil War. Condition is excellent. Blade shows almost no runner marks and surface remains bright and corrosion free. Brass pommel and crossguard with just light patination. Fluted bone grip is intact and shows little wear. Scabbard is mostly excellent with impressions and scuffs. Rivets securing throat portion have gone missing and brass throat is somewhat loose. Est.: $800-$1,200....more

Percussion Kentucky Rifle, unmarked, .40 cal. ball, 40'' octagonal barrel, ful-length walnut stock, hickory ramrod, brass patch box and furniture reminiscent of other Lebanon, PA patterns, with applied ornate silver embellishments. Double pierced brass toeplate with rectangular and coffin-shaped design; sideplate is similarly pierced. Triggerguard extends forward to the first ramrod throat and appears to be one piece. Added silver embellishments include cross flags (one of which is missing), crowns, crescents, and abstract designs, of which approx. ten are missing yet nineteen remain. Wesson & Prescott Model 1841 Single Shot Percussion Rifle, #386, .36 cal., 32'' octagonal brown barrel, lightly American engraved action marked ''Wesson & Prescott'', American walnut buttstock, with lightly engraved German silver buttplate, triggerguard, front sight, patchbox and escutcheons. Top of barrel flat behind rear sight marked ''Wesson & Prescott/Northboro/Mass-Cast Steel/386'', with Federal eagles to left and right of barrel legend. Adjustable double set trigger, with port at top of buttplate and on upper tang for various long-range sight applications. Ca. 1835-1840. Edwin Wesson was the brother of Frank and Daniel Wesson and is considered one of the finest makers of this type rifle during this part of the 19th Century. Edwin Wesson was the first to implement the false muzzle system. Condition is very good with moderate patination to both barrel and frame. Beautiful somewhat fancy walnut buttstock with two small fractures near toe from shrinkage over time. Stock also shows small loss behind hammer to forward right portion of upper tang. Nickel silver furniture with light patination. Double set trigger functions as designed. Rear sight may be a later replacement and lacks elevator blade. Rifle shows its military origin with plugged sling swivel to bottom edge of stock, saddlering bar has been neatly removed, but post-war alterations include barrel, buckhorn rear and German silver front sights, oversized forend, with pewter forend cap and hickory wiping rod. Condition is very good to fine with approx. 85% thinning and moderately toning blue to barrel. C.S. Shattuck Single Shot Shotgun, #127, 8 ga., 33-1/2'' barrel, brown and case hardened finish, checkered walnut stock and forend, case hardened steel buttplate. Mfg'd from 1880 to 1904, with less than 1000 built, this example dating from 1883. Usually weighing over 13 lbs. and one of the first guns to be labeled a ''Punt Gun''. It is interesting to note that Oscar F. Mossberg was one of Shattuck's employees, founding Mossberg & Sons in 1919. Condition is very good to near fine. Sleeved Damascus barrel with mild even toning, somewhat darker near breech. Case hardened frame and breech area have toned a silvery gray with approx. 65% vivid hues in protected areas. Bottom of barrel with ''BUG'' proofmarks, and marked ''7.5M/M'' underneath forend. Matted top barrel flat marked ''Pistor & Kost, Schmalkalden''; top of frame marked in silver ''DRGM No. 919406''. Mfg'd approx. 1923. Condition is excellent showing light thinning to blue at highpoints of barrel flats, 98% vivid case hues. Stock with minor scuffs and one 2'' gouge near lower tang beneath cheekpiece (detracts little). Eyepiece to rear sight is missing. Vaclav Dostal Bohemian Under Lever Side-by-Side Hammer Shotgun, NVSN, 12 ga., 2-1/2'' chambers with undersized bores beginning at the forcing cone measuring .664'' (16 ga.), case-colored finish, 31'' decorative acid-etched Damascus pattern barrels with flat rib and front brass bead, back-action locks with rebounding hammers, double triggers, extractor, 75% coverage fine scroll engraving with gold barrel bands and gold inlaid rib at breech horn triggerguard extension, walnut stock with hunting cheekpiece and light vine carving at wrist, with coarsely checkered wedge forend. Length of pull is 13-3/4'' over an etched metal buttplate inscribed ''Josef Vosmer Sruc 31/12.1884''; weight is 7-3/4 lbs. Overall condition appears fine with few indications of firing, locks are preserved with strong mainsprings, action is tight, bores are bright. Original finish has worn to a gray-brown patina with light oxidation. Stock has shrinkage and mild cracking along the grain with aged scuffs and scratches, forend is worn with wedge pin lodged in place, horn triggerguard extension and lower screws need restoration, missing rear sling swivel. As built for William B. Edwards in approx. 1963, just prior to Winchester's 100th anniversary in 1966 as a possible commemorative arm to be offered in their Centennial year. Rifle additionally features crescent style buttplate and simulated non-functioning loading gate, as rifle is tube fed. Condition is fine as one would expect from a prototype firearm, with most parts remaining in an unfinished state. Left side upper tang of buttstock with crack to stock that can easily be repaired.
