10" (25 cm.) Bisque socket head, very deep amber brown paperweight glass inset eyes, eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with richly defined lip accents, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose E 2 J (and artist checkmarks on head) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1883, the deposed model of his signature doll. Value Points: gorgeous model of the rare petite early bebe with entrancing eyes, finest painting especially of lips, original body and body finish, original wig with original Jumeau earrings, cream kidskin shoes incised "2", original peach silk dress with Alencon lace trim, matching feathered bonnet, pantalets, and original Jumeau chemise.
Doll-Sized Carved Wooden Chair with Carved Winged Cherubs and Gold Leaf Finish 1200/1800

21" (53 cm.) Carved wooden chair with rich gold leaf finish is very ornately designed with scroll and acanthus leaf carving, elaborate cabriole-style legs, curved arms, and a surmounting crest of two winged cherubs, with later silk and velvet upholstery. Excellent condition, some very minor paint wear. Continental, late 18th/early 19th century. Ex-collection June Ellen Lane.

Bisque socket head with very plump cheeks, amber brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth, defined space between the shaded and outlined lips, separately applied pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose 10 (incised, and artist checkmarks on head) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1884, the model was made for one year only. Value Points: superb near mint condition of the rare model, with superlative bisque and painting, original body and body finish, original soft wig (stamped "10"), fine early cashmere woolen costume, undergarments (pantalets stamped "10), knit stockings, leather shoes with burgundy rosettes marked "E. Jumeau", Jumeau burgundy earrings, and silk bonnet with label "N.10" inside bonnet.
French Bisque Automaton "The Drummer Boy" in Regimental Costume 6000/9000

24" (61 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base is a bisque-head boy with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with tiny stuck-out tongue, outlined and shaded lips, brunette human hair over cork pate, one-piece carton torso and legs, composition hands, a wooden-framed drum is attached to the torso. The figure is wearing velvet regimental costume with elaborate insignia and trim, matching helmet, and carries wooden drumsticks in his hands. When wound, he vigorously beats the drum. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F. 10 G. Comments: French, circa 1882. Value Points: wonderful presentation attention-getting automaton with very fine bisque and superb costume.
French Bisque Poupee Peddler, Original Presentation Costume, Wares, Original Dome 8000/12,000

20" (51 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, original hand-tinted amber complexion, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, ears pierced into head, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over cork pate, kid gusset-jointed poupee body with stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1860, the doll was costumed and presented as a peddler for the English market, judging from various accessories. Value Points: all-original presentation with rare complexion, near mint sturdy body, wearing fine antique paisley costume and undergarments, carrying woven basket of wares including sewing novelties, slippers, jewelry, dolls, ink blotters with dog figurals, and a wrapped paper of a few horse hairs with penned notation "hair taken out of the chair used by Mary, Queen of Scots at Sterling Castle". The doll and wares are preserved under their original glass dome, and were acquired from the Dina Vierney Collection.

Pink-tinted porcelain shoulder head of lady with slender oval face and elongated throat, black sculpted hair waved around her face and captured in a tightly braided chignon at the back of her head, pale blue upper-glancing eyes, red and black upper eyeliner, single-stroke brows, aquiline nose, closed mouth with center accent line, blushed cheeks. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (blue crossed swords). Comments: Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur Meissen, circa 1850. Value Points: rare model with exquisite detail of modeling, fine artistic painting.
German Porcelain Nymphenburg Lady with Demure Expression 1100/1600

Lightly pink-tinted porcelain shoulder head with perfectly oval face, slightly elongated throat, brown sculpted hair waved from face in softly rolled curls and having large white sculpted bow at the crown, painted facial features, small blue downcast eyes with well-defined eyelids, arched brown brows, aquiline nose, closed mouth, muslin stitch-jointed body, porcelain lower limbs, lovely rose and ivory silk gown in the 18th century style, undergarments, heeled kid slippers. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 399 W. Comments: Koniglich-Bayerische Porcelain in Nymphenburg, early 20th century. A very limited edition of porcelain dolls were presented at the 1908 Munich Art Doll Exhibition, designed as "decoration dolls", and dressed by the ladies of Munich in various historical costumes. Value Points: rare model with unusual and highly expressive features.

Of very thick paste porcelain with overall pink-tinted complexion, with solid dome, plumply rounded face and sturdy throat, slightly defined bosom and deeply sloping shoulders, deeply modeled features, defined eye sockets with upper-glancing deep blue eyes having white eye notch in pupils, black and red upper eyeliner, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with very rich lips, early hand-tied brunette human hair wig, old muslin stitch-jointed body, leather arms, (frail) antique rose silk gown, undergarments, leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: attributed to Lippert & Haas of Schlaggenwald, circa 1860. Value Points: very rare model, especially in this rare exhibition size, has outstanding detail of sculpting and painting.
Rare and All-Original French Bisque Bebe by Danel and Cie with Signed Shoes 5000/8000

Bisque socket head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, pointy-tip nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair over original cork pate with remains of original wig, French composition and wooden fully jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Tete Depose Paris Bebe 8 (head) Paris Bebe (and Eiffel Tower symbol on torso). Comments: Danel and Cie, circa 1890, the model was made for one or two years only; Anatole Danel, the former manager of the Jumeau firm, established his own firm, creating a bebe model that was nearly identical to the Jumeau bebe. Emile Jumeau successfully sued Danel who was forced to discontinue his bebe. Value Points: very rare bebe due to its short production era, has finest bisque and painting, original signed body, original coral silk costume with braid and lace trim, matching bonnet, undergarments, rose knit stockings and leather shoes incised "8 Paris Depose" with star symbol.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: SFBJ 235 Paris 6 (head) 6 (bottom of feet). Comments: SFBJ, circa 1912. Value Points: well-modeled laughter dimples around the eyes and mouth, original flocking of hair, original body and body finish, original costume including double-breasted coat and matching cap with Red Cross insignias.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 10 (and artist check marks). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1895, one of the dolls is preserved in her original box labeled "Bebe Francaise Habille Mode Parisienne 10". Value Points: preserved in near mint original condition, the dolls have softest blonde mohair wigs, and wear silk and lace costumes that are identical excepting aqua or rose colors, each with original dress, bonnet, undergarments, socks and leather shoes signed "Paris Depose 10" with bee symbol.

Pair of Very Rare French Candy Containers in Elaborate Marquis Costumes 4500/6500

14" (36 cm.) Each has paper mache head with highly characterized features, pronounced nose and chin, painted side-glancing eyes and a closed mouth in wide beaming smile with painted teeth, periwig with side braids, very plump hollow stomach, wooden hands and feet. An elaborate silk Marquis costume is worn by each along with bicorn hat and leather shoes. Each separates at the waist for access to the polished sateen-lined candy container interior. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1885, the pair were offered as candy box containers from a luxury Parisian bon-bon shop. Value Points: very rare pair with wickedly charming expressions, wonderful and all-original costumes. Ex-collection Dina Vierney.
Very Rare French Bisque Double-Faced Bebe Bru as Original Bon-Bon Box 5500/7500

15" (38 cm.) A bisque head on bisque shoulder plate has two faces which can be alternately revealed by turning the head and flipping the cardboard cap; one face having rosy complexion depicts a crying child whose sculpted closed mouth is modeled as though open, with painted tongue and teeth, painted blue eyes with black outline and lashes, fringed brows, and furrowed frown lines; the alternate face has softly blushed delicate complexion, laughter crinkles around the eyes, painted blue eyes with decorative glaze and thick upper eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, shaded nostrils, mouth modeled as though laughing with two rows of tiny beaded teeth. The doll has brunette wig and is attached to original bon-bon box which is covered with quilted aqua silk, and separates at the waist for access to the bon-bon container. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: from the studios of Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1883, the double-faced bebe model was offered either as a doll or, as in this instance, as a very luxurious candy box presentation. Value Points: especially fine sculpting and artistic painting of expressive features on the very rare model, with original bon-bon box presentation and luxury silk and lace costume.

Bisque shoulder head of adult lady with heart-shaped face, sculpted blonde hair in elaborate waves at her forehead crown and then waved back and captured under a rose-tinted bisque scarf that drapes gracefully onto her shoulders and is decorated with gold bead edging, tiny white bead dots, magenta polka dots, gold tassels at the back and black "lace" edging at the lower bodice; the doll has blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, refined aquiline nose shape, closed mouth with outlined lips, old muslin stitch-jointed body, leather arms, and is nicely costumed. Bisque shoulder head portraying an adult lady with oval-shaped face and elongated throat, sculpted ash-blonde hair arranged in long flowing curls that tumble onto her shoulders and are waved across her forehead, topped by an exuberant green and white plaid tam with magenta stripes, rose and black checkered border and tri-color plumes, and having blue glass inset eyes with dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, fully sculpted pierced ears, and sculpted bodice with gilt-edged collar and polka-dotted blue scarf, original muslin stitch-jointed body with bisque lower arms, painted bisque ankle boots in plaid design with painted laces, antique gown. Condition: generally excellent. Mark: 5 D 3 (in script). Comments: C.F. Kling, circa 1870. Bisque shoulder head with rounded face, blonde sculpted short blonde hair with tousled bangs under a sculpted grey hat with rounded top, black painted brim and band, sculpted bodice with ruffled collar, blue glass inset eyes, sculpted ears, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, very full outlined lips, newer muslin stitch-jointed body and bisque lower limbs, antique velvet costume. Condition: generally excellent, possible small professional restoration on hat brim. Marks: 160-5. Comments: Kling, circa 1875. Value Points: most endearing innocent expression on the very rare model with wonderfully detailed features, unusual hat, glass eyes, maker's mark. Ex-collection Margaret Hartshorn.
