Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base is a bisque-head boy with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with tiny stuck-out tongue, outlined and shaded lips, brunette human hair over cork pate, one-piece carton torso and legs, composition hands, a wooden-framed drum is attached to the torso. The figure is wearing velvet regimental costume with elaborate insignia and trim, matching helmet, and carries wooden drumsticks in his hands. When wound, he vigorously beats the drum. Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, original hand-tinted amber complexion, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, ears pierced into head, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over cork pate, kid gusset-jointed poupee body with stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1860, the doll was costumed and presented as a peddler for the English market, judging from various accessories. Value Points: all-original presentation with rare complexion, near mint sturdy body, wearing fine antique paisley costume and undergarments, carrying woven basket of wares including sewing novelties, slippers, jewelry, dolls, ink blotters with dog figurals, and a wrapped paper of a few horse hairs with penned notation "hair taken out of the chair used by Mary, Queen of Scots at Sterling Castle". Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Tete Depose Paris Bebe 8 (head) Paris Bebe (and Eiffel Tower symbol on torso). Comments: Danel and Cie, circa 1890, the model was made for one or two years only; Anatole Danel, the former manager of the Jumeau firm, established his own firm, creating a bebe model that was nearly identical to the Jumeau bebe. Emile Jumeau successfully sued Danel who was forced to discontinue his bebe. An elaborate silk Marquis costume is worn by each along with bicorn hat and leather shoes. Each separates at the waist for access to the polished sateen-lined candy container interior. Very Rare French Bisque Double-Faced Bebe Bru as Original Bon-Bon Box 5500/7500

A bisque head on bisque shoulder plate has two faces which can be alternately revealed by turning the head and flipping the cardboard cap; one face having rosy complexion depicts a crying child whose sculpted closed mouth is modeled as though open, with painted tongue and teeth, painted blue eyes with black outline and lashes, fringed brows, and furrowed frown lines; the alternate face has softly blushed delicate complexion, laughter crinkles around the eyes, painted blue eyes with decorative glaze and thick upper eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, shaded nostrils, mouth modeled as though laughing with two rows of tiny beaded teeth. The doll has brunette wig and is attached to original bon-bon box which is covered with quilted aqua silk, and separates at the waist for access to the bon-bon container. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: from the studios of Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1883, the double-faced bebe model was offered either as a doll or, as in this instance, as a very luxurious candy box presentation. Bisque shoulder head with rounded face, blonde sculpted short blonde hair with tousled bangs under a sculpted grey hat with rounded top, black painted brim and band, sculpted bodice with ruffled collar, blue glass inset eyes, sculpted ears, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, very full outlined lips, newer muslin stitch-jointed body and bisque lower limbs, antique velvet costume. Condition: generally excellent, possible small professional restoration on hat brim. Marks: 160-5. Comments: Kling, circa 1875.
