Rare unusual Workingman's Dead framed poster

Lot # 701 (Sale Order: 351 of 368)

This is one of the rarest early (1970) Grateful Dead promo posters we have in the auction with a total known population of an estimated 5 to 8 surviving posters. It surfaced in the best of ways, with a letter from an old friend writing with an excellent story about it. “Sorry to bother you with this………Back in the early 70’s Bob Mathews was moving and flipped a big roll of these posters at me  and said, ”Do want these?”  I looked at them and said “Sure”.   It was a roll of 100. They were to go to record stores as a promo for the record. I kept them for years…until one year in 90’ or 91’ I was up on Big Ridge and it was Xmas eve.  I had a bunch of presents and no wrapping paper.  It was getting late and a long way to town and back, I used Bob’s roll of Workingman’s Dead promo posters, which were printed on something like butcher paper. I assumed that there had been 10,000 or more printed for the promo by Warner’s. Well as it turns out they did not use this but one which you no doubt are aware of.  It is on the same paper but is printed vertical with the band pic with Hunter at the top, but smaller and line drawings of each band member under it…….no Hunter. There are tons of them. It seems that somehow Bob had the only roll of the variant which numbered 100.  I used up 97 that night and kept 3. Sometime after my bust in 95’, maybe around 2001 or 2002 I put up a bunch of posters on e-bay, I put two of the Working Man posters up unframed and started getting a bunch of crazy bids.  I wound up getting something like 12 to 15 hundred dollars apiece for them- unframed. One went to the kid that was the head of Sonic Youth in NYC, the other to Bill at Warner’s. That is when I realized that they were so rare and maybe the last three.  I have one left…..I enclose an attachment of it.  I had it framed in Beverly Hills at the finest framer around, all museum quality”. This poster is one of 4 known unfolded/undamaged copies and has been owned by a well-known retired music industry executive and old-school sixties promoter since Bob Mathews gifted it to him over 40 years ago, and is in dead mint condition and professionally framed to museum standards. Dimensions of poster itself: 31.75” X 24?. Estimate: $15,000-25,000...more

Grateful Dead 1ST Print 1966 FD-26 Skeleton Signed

Lot # 706 (Sale Order: 356 of 368)

An original 1st printing 1966 FD-26 Grateful Dead Skeleton & Roses concert poster for the historic September 16th and 17th 1966 shows at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom.   This is the most recognized iconic Grateful Dead poster of all time and also happens to be the key to the Family Dog numbered poster series, and due to this special sets of grading criteria apply to these posters that are unique to each in the FD series because they tend to sell to sophisticated seasoned buyers with an ever changing language of their own. That said, this is a solid poster with no holes, tears, rips, dings, dents or tack/pin corner holes with clean nice edges all the way around and zero restoration of any kind which sets it apart from most others these days. In these respects we would give this poster a 9.5 of 10, with the only issues found being two minute tape removal remnants on the reverse, and some slight fading on the face, which combined would make this poster a solid 9+ completely unrestored original 1966 Grateful Dead cornerstone piece. It also has a nice Stanley Mouse signature which he charges $1000 to sign on these particular posters when found.   This is yet another of the Ray Giles “Top 20 Rarest Grateful Dead Posters” and the cornerstone to any Family Dog or Grateful Dead poster collection. The poster was photographed in an archival sleeve to protect it, no flaws, mint condition. Dimensions: 14” X 20”. Estimate: $7,000-10,000...more

This is yet another of the Ray Giles “Top 20 Rarest Grateful Dead Posters” and the cornerstone to any Bill Graham or Grateful Dead poster collection. Museum quality archival framed with acid free matting, backing , and UV protective glass. NOT examined out of the frame. Dimensions: 14” X 20”. Estimate: $10,000-20,000...more
