Exceptional Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1000 (Sale Order: 1 of 952)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Carbine

Winchester Model 1895 carbine manufactured circa 1920. The carbine features the military style forearm with grasping grooves, military type handguard and military folding leaf rear sight. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The carbine style buttplate has a sliding steel trapdoor. The barrel, barrel band, receiver, bolt, magazine, lever and buttplate have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The hand guard, stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a military style oil finish. The top of the receiver is stamped with the Winchester oval "W/P" proofmark above the caliber designation "30/ARMY". The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN." in a single line above the 1895-1907 patent dates. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. OfF & FGN." in three-lines. The serial number, "401441" is stamped across the lower tang behind the trigger. The Model 1895 Winchester rifles and carbines featured the unique non-detachable box magazine and were designed to high power smokeless cartridges.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent plus, near new. The carbine is all original, retains nearly 99% of the blue finish and appears to be un-fired. The stock and forearm are in the same, near new, condition as the metal components. The only visible wear is a series of very faint scuff marks on the right side of the stock between the buttplate and the lever. These marks are very faint and do not detract from the exceptional, nearly new, condition of the carbine. This is an outstanding example of a late production Winchester Model 1895 Carbine in nearly new condition.

Documented and Historic Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 1003 (Sale Order: 4 of 952)

Documented and Historic Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle was manufactured in 1892. The accompanying factory letter confirms the configuration and that it was received in the warehouse on January 24, 1894 and shipped out on December 1, 1894 on order number 3017. Consignor documentation with the rifle states that it was one of seven consecutively numbered Model 1886 rifles purchased by the Kinsley Bank in 1894. The rifles were given to businesses surrounding the bank for use as "guard guns" in the event of a robbery. The rifle history is written on an old tag attached to the lever. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and a screw-adjustable center-piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate with color casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates. The serial number "83021" is roll-stamped in script numerals behind the rear tang screw.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The rifle is all original and retains nearly 90% of the blue and 40% plus color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine; wear is limited to a few very minor spots of age discoloration. The barrel markings are crisp and nearly all of the blue finish remains on the bolt while the finish on the loading gate has faded to a blue gray patina. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever retain nearly 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The receiver has some scattered spots of age discoloration overall. The case colors on the left side of the receiver have show some light flaking. The casehardened buttplate has several patches of surface rust and retains about 50% of the original finish. The stock and forearm remain in very good condition with a few minor handling and storage marks. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver and interesting history.

"38 CAL" is stamped in script letters across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number, "319788B" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw.

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 60% of the blue and casehardened finish. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap have most of the blue finish intact with a blue-brown patina and some age spotting. The receiver retains most of the bright blue finish. The finish on the right side and side plate and parts of the left side of the frame show considerable blue-brown patina on contact points. The loading gate retains nearly all of the fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger and loading gate have 95% of the muted case colors intact. The case colors on the buttplate have slightly more wear but remain about 90% intact. The markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in very good overall condition. Most of the original finish is present on the stock while the forearm shows more handling wear. There is an old, shallow, 3/4-inch chip in the underside the stock behind the receiver tang; the remainder of the stock shows limited handling wear. The forearm has several small handling marks and bruises. This is a very good, original example of a 1888 production, Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle.

Historic Identified 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle with Do

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 952)

Historic Identified 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle with Documentation

Early production New Haven Arms Co., Henry rifle with 1971 notarized statement (from a family descendent). That states the rifle was originally the property of William Perry Finch of Farmersville, Indiana. Documents included with the rifle indicate that William Finch served with the 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. According to the National Park Service website, William Finch is confirmed as having served with the 65th Indiana (Company A) and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant before he was mustered out. The 65th Indiana mustered into service in August 1862 and was part of the Army of the Ohio from 1863 until it mustered out of service in June 1865. The regiment saw action in east Tennessee in late 1863, in the Atlanta Campaign in the summer of 1864, in the Nashville Campaign, including the Battle of Franklin, in November-December 1864 and in the Wilmington Campaign in 1865. As noted the 65th Indiana participated in the Atlanta Campaign, a series of battles that ended with Union forces capturing Atlanta. Under the command of Major General William T. Sherman, Union forces successfully invaded Georgia from the vicinity of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Confederate Army withdrew and was besieged in Atlanta which fell on September 2, 1864. Afterwards, the Union Army went off in two directions. The pursuit of General Hood’s forces in the northwest known as the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, which the 65th Indiana participated in, and to the east with the famous Sherman’s March to the Sea. The 65th Indiana lost 254 officers and enlisted men killed in action or for disease. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass gun metal receiver and buttplate. The stock is straight grain black walnut. This early production rifle was manufactured circa November-December 1862 and has the desirable early features that include receiver with alternative rear sight dovetail, straight follower cut in the receiver, small diameter brass follower, nickel silver half-moon front sight, serial numbered tang and buttplate screws and first style buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel dovetail is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The right side of the stock and barrel are factory fitted with a sling swivel and screw-fastened sling hook loop. Most Henry rifles have the sling swivel and loop attached to the opposite side of the stock and barrel but a few early rifles, like this example, are documented with the fittings on the right side. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight. The First Style marking has all serifed letters except for the word "NEWHAVEN" in the second line. The serial number, "1242" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock, on the inside of the buttplate across the top of the heel, on the shanks of the hand fitted buttplate screws and on the shanks of the two small tang screws. The lower receiver tang has a factory inspection mark that consists of a punch-mark stamped behind the rear tang screw. All the markings and serial number locations are correct for an early production rifle. The Henry rifle was the most advanced shoulder arm used in the Civil War. Most of the Henry rifles manufactured between 1862 and 1865 are believed to have been privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the best weapon obtainable. Henry rifles were especially popular with Indiana and Illinois soldiers serving the Army of Ohio or the Army of the Cumberland. The Ordnance Department purchased fewer than 1,800 Henry rifles during the war; issue was limited to the 1st D.C. Cavalry and 3rd Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiments.

Class: Antique

Good. The rifle is all original and shows the wear typical of a weapon carried in three major campaigns during two years of combat. The barrel has a dark patina with some scattered light pitting and handling wear on the edges. Both the front and rear sight appear to be original to the rifle. The barrel legend and serial number are sharp. The brass receiver and buttplate have an attractive untouched patina. The top and sides of the receiver, the upper side plate joints and adjacent areas of the receiver have shallow dents and scratches. There are a number of shallow dents in the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The buttplate has numerous light scratches and some patches of age discoloration. The hammer, trigger and lever have a mottled brown patina. The stock is good overall with scattered light handling marks. This is a good example of a co

Documented and Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle Chambered for the .50 Winches

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 7 of 952)

Documented and Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle Chambered for the .50 Winchester High Velocity Cartridge with Factory Letter

The Cody Firearms Museum letter lists this Winchester Model 1886 Takedown rifle's features as: (1) Caliber: 50 express, (2) Barrel Type: Octagon, (3) Trigger: Plain, (4) Takedown and (5) Winchester High Velocity. It states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 22, 1909. The Winchester High Velocity was a smokeless power version of the 50-110 Express with a 300 grain bullet and muzzle velocity of 2,225 feet per second. The .50 Winchester High Velocity cartridge was comparable to some British African cartridges. Model 1886 rifles chambered for the .50 Winchester High Velocity cartridge had nickel steel barrels and were fitted with special express sights. Fewer than 50 Winchester Model 1886 rifles were chambered for the .50 Winchester High Velocity cartridge. The 50-110 Express was introduced in to the Model 1886 line in 1887 and was discontinued in 1919. According to Madis in "THE WINCHESTER BOOK", rifles manufactured for 50 Express were far few in number compared to the highly popular and more readily available 45-70. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a Winchester Express front sight with white bead and a rare three leaf Winchester Express rear sight with short yardage leaves marked "50", "1" and "2" and platinum sight lines. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a low-luster varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." in two-lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "50 EX." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. Winchester oval "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top barrel flat in front of the caliber designation and on the top of the receiver behind the takedown collar. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-TRADE MARK" in three-lines. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "139283" is stamped in script numerals behind the tang screws.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. The rifle is all original and retains 95% plus of the bright original blue finish overall. The barrel and forearm cap have nearly all of the commercial blue finish. The magazine band and tube have some light takedown scuff marks. The takedown collar has some extremely light edge wear. The receiver has light high-point wear and some insignificant scratches and handling marks. The bolt retains nearly all of the blue finish. The loading gate has 98% or more of the fire blue finish. The case colors on the hammer and lever are strong with 98% remaining. The case colors on the buttplate have faded slightly. One half of the 100 yard rear sight leaf is broken. The stock and forearm are both in excellent overall condition with a few scattered and very minor handling marks. The stock retains nearly all the original finish while the forearm finish shows light handling wear. The action functions perfectly. This is an excellent example of a very rare, documented, special order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown rifle chambered for the highly desirable .50 Winchester High Velocity Cartridge.

Manufactured in 1870, this Third Model 1866 SRC features special ordered nickel finish on all parts except for the barrel and magazine tube. Outstanding Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Original Hang Tag

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 952)

Outstanding Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Original Hang Tag

This is an astoundingly high condition example of a Winchester Model 1895 carbine manufactured in 1903. The Model 1895 series was designed by John Browning and was the first box magazine Winchester rifle. It was designed to handle strong pointed bullets that were incompatible with other lever actions of the period. Theodore Roosevelt personally ensured that the Rough Rider officers were issued Model 1895s for their participation in the Spanish-American War and Roosevelt prized his custom Model 1895 sporting rifles during his post-war hunting expeditions. This carbine has a pinned blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated "10" to "18". The action is marked with the Winchester proof over "30/ARMY" at the breech and the two line address and patent information on the left side. The upper tang has the model and trade mark information and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. It is fitted with a saddle ring and stud on the left side of the action and a smooth oiled walnut straight grip stock, handguard, and forearm with grasping grooves. Included with the carbine is an original factory "ASSEMBLING SHOP TAG" and a two piece cleaning rod.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Near new. The carbine retains 99% plus of the original blue finish with only some slight blemishes such as a tiny scrape on the right side of the receiver, light rub wear near the saddle ring, and slight cycling wear. The wood is in matching excellent condition with some slight discoloration in the right side grasping groove and some slight handling/storage marks. The action is excellent, and the markings are sharp. The hang tag is in very good condition for its age with some light aging. This is the highest condition Model 1895s we have ever had the pleasure of offering!

Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle with Extra Barrel and Factory Letter

Lot # 1012 (Sale Order: 13 of 952)

Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle with Extra Barrel and Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1886 Takedown rifle manufactured in 1908 with 33 WCF and .45-70 barrels. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that describes it as: "Rifle, 33 caliber, Round barrel, Plain trigger, Plain pistol grip, Full magazine, Takedown" and "Rifle butt". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 5, 1908, and returned and repaired on October 8, 1914. The rifle has a blued barrel, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. Both forearms and the pistol grip stock are straight grain American walnut with a high polish finish and "Style I" checkered panels. The stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber, shotgun style buttplate with the Winchester logo in the center and a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The rifle is fitted with factory double set triggers which were probably installed when it was returned to Winchester in 1914. Both barrels are fitted with Lyman "Hunting Style" front sights with white beads and Charles Daniels sporting style rear sights with special half-circle apertures. The rear sight on the .33 W.C.F. barrel has a white insert. The 33 W.C.F. barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester legend on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" followed by "33 W.C.F." on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The .45-70 barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester legend on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and the Nickel Steel marking and caliber designation below the rear sight. The top of the barrels and the receiver are stamped with the oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three-lines. The serial number "145019" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as factory refurbished. The receiver and .45-70 barrel retain at least 95% of the original blue finish. Wear is limited to takedown marks on the upper portion of the magazine and the barrel band. The hammer and lever have at least 90% of the casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with sharp checkering and minimal handling wear. The left side of the stock is lightly inscribed with a plugged circle of filler wood about 1 1/2-inch in diameter. The .33 W.C.F. barrel shows more wear than the .45-70 barrel and retains 85% of the blue finish with thinning on the forearm cap and takedown collar and takedown marks on the forward portion of the magazine. The forearm has moderate handling wear with some finish loss and is in very good condition. This is a unique example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle with extra barrel.

The letter states that the rifle was "Charged to Jos. A. Marks Co., Detroit MI" and shipped from Winchester on October 12, 1916. A document entitled "A Biographical Dictionary of Leading Men of the City of Detroit" states Joseph A. Marks owned the Detroit sporting goods store "Joseph A. Marks & Co.".

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The rifle is all original and retains at least 85% of the blue and case-hardened finish. The barrel and magazine retain nearly all of the blue finish with minimal take-down marks. The blue finish on the take-down collar is thin. Most of the high polish blue is present on the forearm cap. The receiver has light-moderate handling wear with scattered small spots of finish flaking and light handling marks. The loading gate has a dull blue finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the bolt. The hammer and loading gate have most of the muted case colors intact with some edge wear and silvering on the sides and bottom of the lever. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are both in very fine condition. The original oil finish on the wrist and forearm has dulled slightly from handling but the checkering remains sharp. The stock and forearm have minimal handling and storage marks. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Takedown Sporting rifle with very rare factory engraved inscription.

Rare Deluxe Factory Engraved Gold-Plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1017 (Sale Order: 18 of 952)

Rare Deluxe Factory Engraved Gold-Plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Deluxe, factory engraved, gold-plated, Winchester Model 1866 rifle that was manufactured circa 1869. The rifle has the Third Model features which include the serial number, "38510" stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and moderately curved receiver profile. The rifle has a blued octagon barrel and full-length magazine, color casehardened hammer, lever and trigger, niter blue loading gate and gold plated brass forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are deluxe, fancy grain walnut with a high polish 'piano' finish. The forearm cap, sides, top and bottom of the receiver and heel of the buttplate are factory engraved with Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. Both side plates have open panels. The panels on the forward portion of the receiver contain floral engraving. An eagle head is partially concealed in the scrollwork on the left side of the receiver. The engraving features a combination of wavy line, scalloped and dot borders which is typical of the borders on Winchester rifles factory engraved by Conrad, John or Herman Ulrich. The eagle head on the left side plate is similar to the animal heads found on Gustave Young engraved firearms. Early Ulrich engraving was similar in style to Gustave Young's work. The barrel has a special order, dove-tail mounted, globe front sight and a standard, Henry style folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and a slide stop screw. A folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has special order sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock. The hammer spur has border-less knurling. The buttplate has a hinged trap door and the butt trap contains the standard, four-piece, jointed and steel ramrod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "38510" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and enclosed in an engraved banner. A factory inspection mark "B" is stamped behind the serial number.

Class: Antique

Very fine as period replated. The gold plated finish on the forearm cap, receiver and buttplate shows only minimal wear and is at least 95% intact. The engraving is deep and crisp. The side plate joints are tight. The barrel and magazine retain 70% plus of the original blue finish with sharp edges and crisp barrel legend. The case colors on the hammer, trigger, lever and sling swivels have faded to a mottled dove-gray. Considerable fire blue finish is visible on the loading gate. The balance is a blue gray patina. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock is in very fine condition and retains most of the high polish piano finish. The forearm has a number of shallow dents and scratches and some minor finish loss. The stock has less handling wear than the forearm with a few scattered and very minor dents and scratches. This is an outstanding example of a rare, deluxe, factory engraved, gold plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action rifle.

Identified 3rd Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 19 of 952)

Identified 3rd Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in January 1865 and issued to 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment (3rd VVI). This rifle is one of 627 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in 1865. It is identified by serial number as a 3rd VVI rifle on page 76 of "THE HISTORIC HENRY RIFLE" by Wiley Sword. The 3rd VVI rifles were part of a group of Henry, Sharps and Spencer rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department to arm the four Veteran Volunteer Infantry (VVI) regiments raised in early 1865. The VVI regiments were composed of veteran soldiers armed with the most advanced firearms who would act as a corps of elite infantry. As an incentive for enlistment, the VVI soldiers were authorized to retain their rifles when they mustered out of service. The VVI regiments were organized too late to see any significant action in the Civil War. The 3rd VVI was mustered out of Federal service at Camp Butler, Illinois, in July 1866. Unlike the 900 Henry rifles purchased in December 1863 to arm the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment which were stamped with "C.G.C." Ordnance inspection marks on the receiver and stock, most of the Henry rifles purchased for the 3rd VVI in 1865 did not have government inspection marks. However a few rifles, like this example, have been noted with the small block letters "JT" stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. As Quick's book states on Page 142, "JT" is one of the two variations of inspector initials. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel is blue, the hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened and the stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the Second Style receiver without rear sight dovetail, late buttplate with sharply pointed heel, large diameter brass magazine follower and beveled follower cut in the receiver. The folding leaf rear sight is the final pattern with an elevator bar stop screw in the top of the leaf. The left side of the stock and barrel are fitted with a sling swivel and screw fastened loop for a sling hook. Although sling swivels and loops were special order items on early Henry rifles, they were standard features on late production rifles. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the large Second Style legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN CT." that uses all serif (Roman) letters. The serial number matching "7854" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver and on the left side of the lower receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate at the toe. The late style cap head buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The butt trap contains the Second Style, four piece, jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip that was issued with later production Henry rifles.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The rifle is all original, retains traces of the original blue finish and shows limited service related wear. The barrel has an attractive, deep brown patina with smooth surfaces and sharp edges. The New Haven Arms legend and serial number are sharp. The front and rear sight are original to the rifle. The brass receiver and buttplate are in very good condition and have a mellow, un-polished, patina. The side-plate joints are tight. The stock is in very fine condition. Wear is limited to a few shallow scratches and handling marks concentrated mostly on the left side. The "JT" mark on the left stock wrist is very faint but visible. This is a superior example of one of the 627 late production Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department to arm the 3rd VVI Regiment.
