1929 Oldsmobile Landau 4dr Sedan

Lot # 9Q (Sale Order: 18 of 79)

Selling at No Reserve is a 1928 that is sold and was titled in 1929 Oldsmobile Landau 4dr Sedan (Titled VIN F64285). This car was purchased by Mr. Quam in November 1980 from Verne Lyman in Owatonna, MN. When Mr. Quam purchased the car, it came with the original Oldsmobile Service Card in the name of the original owner, Theo Szymanski of Owatonna, MN. The car was delivered to Mr. Szymanski on October 6, 1928. This card will be included to the buyer. Mr. Szymanski was a farmer and more “well to do” than many in the area. The story goes that he would drive the car very slowly when going to town in order to show it off. He considered the car to be Quite a Showpiece, when others were driving Fords or Chevrolets. In the file for this car, there are several receipts, correspondence and bills concerning the body and paintwork that was done during the restoration, that Mr. Quam had done. Mr. Quam had the car painted in what are believed to be original brown colors for this car. There is correspondence in the file including a factory bulletin that addresses the original colors for this 1929 Oldsmobile Landau Sedan. The radiator shell, along with the wire wheels and hubcaps were also painted brown. Car has a black Landau top, dual side mounts with locks and rear suicide doors. The interior of this car is the original brown fleur-de-lis patterned mohair, which is still in very good condition. The interior could stand some re-padding of the cushions, but overall is quite usable and is a great feature for the car. The car has a six-cylinder engine with a manual transmission that shows 76,667 miles on the odometer, that is most likely the actual mileage on this car. Runs and Drives and has brakes. This is an opportunity to buy a very rare car that is a blend of original and conservative restoration as needed. Having the name of the original owner, not to mention the original service card that came with the car when it was new, is something that is almost unheard of on an 86-year-old car. According to the appraiser for this Car Collection, this car would be rated as a Strong Condition 3 on the Standard Grading Scale for collector cars. This is part of the Grant J Quam Collection Auction in Boone, IA on September 26, 2015. The car is being offered at NO Reserve and would be a great addition to any Collection. NO RESERVE All items are Selling AS IS and ALL SALES ARE FINAL. NO WARRANTY OR GUARANTEE OF ANY KIND either expressed or implied by the Seller or Auctioneers. Statements made Day of Sale take precedence over written advertisements. NO EXCEPTIONS. Buyers are responsible for all shipping arrangements and costs. The car received a complete ground up restoration at that time. There is a pinstriped message on the dashboard that indicates the car was restored by Medicine Bow Motors. This car completed Mr. Quam’s trio of 1934 Phaetons. This was the companion to his 1934 Chevrolet Phaeton and his 1934 Plymouth Phaeton that are also being offered at this Auction. The car is deep Maroon in color with Pinstriping and a Tan top. It has Suicide Doors, a Rear Mounted Spare Tire, Red painted Wire Spoke Wheels, Wide White Wall Tires, Dual Horns and beautiful chrome. This car has been very well preserved and has always been kept with Mr. Quam’s better cars in a Climate Controlled building, since he has owned it. According to the appraiser for this Car Collection, this car would be rated as a Condition 2 on the Standard Grading Scale for collector cars. NO RESERVE This is part of the Grant J Quam Collection Auction in Boone, IA on September 26, 2015. The car is being offered at NO Reserve and would be a great addition to any Collection. 1934 Chevrolet Master Phaeton

Lot # 11Q (Sale Order: 21 of 79)

Selling at No Reserve is a RARE 1934 Chevrolet Master Phaeton with a Holden body (Bonded Title VIN 4364410309). This was a very low or limited production car. According to what is known about Chevrolet production data, Chevrolet made 234 Standard Phaeton’s in 1934, but appears that Very Few Masters were produced that year. Of those only a handful exist today. This is 1 of four Holden-bodied Master Phaetons built by Chevrolet during the 1933-1934 “Century of Progress” World’s Fair in Chicago, Illinois. These Holden bodies would have been built in Australia and shipped to the United States. According to Mr. Quam, Chevrolet brought in four of the Holden Phaeton bodies to “Spice Things Up” in the public assembly line at the exhibit. Also according to Mr. Quam’s account, these four cars eventually ended up in Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, and this one with a Preacher in Little Rock, Arkansas. Regardless if the story of the car being built at the World’s Fair is accurate, the fact remains that this is a very rare car. There is much evidence to support the fact that General Motors shipped chassis to Australia and that Holden bodies were installed on those chassis. Years later, the Preacher in Little Rock sold the car to a young man in Buffalo, New York. Over the years, that man accumulated a large number of new old-stock (NOS) parts for the car including four new fenders, new running boards, new headlights and new horns to name a few. According to Mr. Quam, the list of NOS parts was typed single-spaced and took a whole sheet of paper. The car that ended up in the possession of Mr. Quam was originally a “dull dark blue color.” In the 1980’s, Mr. Quam embarked on the complete restoration of this very rare car. The car is very well restored; all of the wood in the body was replaced and the fit of the panels and doors is excellent. The car still carries the Holden body tag on the right front door sill. This car has many accessories and is a Very Attractive car in a beautiful cream yellow color with a tan top. The wire wheels are red in color with wide white wall tires and fender skirts on the rear. Dual side mount spares with metal covers and a rear trunk that has an attached luggage rack. The interior is maroon pleather with a cream colored dash. The chrome and stainless is in excellent condition. This was a very high quality restoration. Car has a six-cylinder engine and a manual transmission. Runs and drives. The odometer reads 64,129 miles. Only a few miles have been put on the car since it was restored and has been kept in a climate-controlled building. This car is a showstopper and a great addition to any collection. NO RESERVE. According to the appraiser for this Car Collection, this car would be rated as a Strong Condition 2 on the Standard Grading Scale for collector cars. With very minimal work, this would be an Award-Winning automobile wherever it is shown. This is part of the Grant J Quam Collection Auction in Boone, IA on September 26, 2015. The car is being offered at NO Reserve. All items are Selling AS IS and ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Buyer is responsible for Liability and Storage after purchase. Auction Company can arrange for an outside Storage Company to house vehicles for up to 10 days at Buyers expense if required. 1934 Plymouth Phaeton

Lot # 12Q (Sale Order: 24 of 79)

You are bidding on a VERY RARE 1934 Plymouth Phaeton with a Holden body (Titled VIN PF90231). Mr. Quam purchased this car from Medicine Bow Motors in Missoula, Montana, in the early 1980’s. The car and its purchase started a stir in the Plymouth automotive community wanting more information on the car, as most had never heard of it. There is much correspondence in the file from other Plymouth enthusiasts asking for more detailed information about the car. The car has been authenticated by the Plymouth Club, and is 1 of 5 cars of this model. What is known is that the car was in very poor condition when Mr. Quam purchased it from Medicine Bow Motors. In the file are photos of the 1934 Plymouth Phaeton when he purchased it showing the rough unrestored condition. Mr. Quam embarked on a total restoration of this car during the late 1980’s. The last major part of the restoration was the upholstery in 2006, which cost over $15,000. The body has been completely re-wooded and almost every component has been rebuilt. The fit of the body panels and doors are excellent. Copies of all the bills for the restoration will be provided to the new owner. The car is red in color with black fenders and running boards. The interior is red leather and the top is tan in color. It has yellow Artillery style wheels and wide whitewall tires. It has a side mount well in the right front fender, but the spare tire and wheel are not mounted at this time. The spare tire and wheel along with it’s metal cover (unrestored) and mounting hardware will be included with the car. Also has a body fit attached rear trunk. The chrome and stainless is in excellent condition. Car also has front suicide doors. Six-cylinder engine with a manual transmission. The odometer reads 62,692 miles, but only a few miles since its restoration. Runs and Drives. The car is converted right hand drive and we will include these parts. Tens of thousands of dollars went into the restoration of the car and anyone getting it will be acquiring a Very Rare Vehicle that has been well restored. The car as been stored in a climate controlled building since it’s restoration. The car is so unusual and in such good condition, it will be an award winner wherever it is shown. According to the appraiser for this Car Collection, this car would be rated as a Strong Condition 2 on the Standard Grading Scale for collector cars. This is part of the Grant J Quam Collection Auction in Boone, IA on September 26, 2015. This is a Beautiful Car being SOLD SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION OF THE FAMILY. 1936 Pierce Arrow Country Club 2dr Roadster

Lot # 13Q (Sale Order: 25 of 79)

You are bidding on a 1936 Pierce Arrow Country Club 2dr Roadster (Titled VIN 2215225). This 1936 Pierce Arrow has been an Iowa car since the 1950’s and possibly longer. After consulting with a Pierce Arrow expert, it is believed that there are only three, 1936 Country Club Roadsters in existence. The car was owned by Allan Atherton, an antique car collector from Dexter, Iowa, for close to 30 years. In the early 1980’s, at the height of the farm crisis in Iowa, Mr. Atherton was forced to liquidate most of his antique car collection. This is when Mr. Quam purchased the car from the bank in Dexter, Iowa. It was Mr. Atherton that chose the colors for this car. In talking with his family, they confirmed what Mr. Quam always had said, that the color scheme of this car was based on a Butternut Coffee can of the era. The color change was made when the car was restored in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s, while in Mr. Atherton’s possession. Mr. Atherton’s family has provided photos of the car during their ownership including a photo of the car in a parade with the Governor of Iowa riding in the rumble seat. None of Mr. Atherton’s family can recall where the car came exactly from when their father purchased it nor what color it was before it was restored. Grant Quam drove the car extensively, including a Cross Country Pierce Arrow Tour beginning in Binghamton, New York, in about 1995. Before embarking on this trip, Mrs. Quam (Betty) insisted that she would go with her husband on the trip, but only if the car had air conditioning. In order to accomplish this, a 12-volt electrical system was installed to run parallel to the 6-volt system. An “under dash” air conditioner was installed along with an AM-FM Cassette deck and a CB radio. All of these items can easily be removed and everything returned to original, as the original parts are still in place. During the Cross Country Tour, the car was involved in a minor accident that proved quite expensive to repair. The car was sent to a restoration shop in Wisconsin where the damaged area was stripped, repaired and all body work done. The car was returned to Ames, where it was completely repainted back to the “Butternut Coffee” colors. The bill for painting alone was over $18,000. This car has an overdrive that makes it a very nice car on the highway, capable of keeping up with modern traffic. It's a great car that was driven and enjoyed. The car has the big Straight 8 cylinder engine, 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive and 139 inch wheel base. It has wire spoke wheels, dual side mount spares with metal covers and side golf club doors. The car has a black convertible top with the Butternut Coffee Can Orange and Gold paint, with a unique story. The chrome and stainless are in very good condition. There are two aluminum trim pieces that go on each side of the lower radiator cowl that are not shown in the photos, but are included with the car. The Black interior has a pleather bench seat and panels, with Gold carpet. The car also has dual side mounted mirrors and a clock in the glove compartment door. There are 10,674 miles on the odometer. This car is in excellent condition that runs and drives quite well, as it is. This is a Very Rare, outstanding and Impressive car that needs nothing more than to be driven and enjoyed. Since Mr. Quam has owned the car, it has been kept in a Climate Controlled building. Beautiful Car and would be a Great addition to any collection. According to the appraiser for this Car Collection, this car would be rated as a Strong Condition 3 on the Standard Grading Scale for collector cars. This is part of the Grant J Quam Collection Auction in Boone, IA on September 26, 2015. This is a Very RARE CAR AND IS BEING SOLD SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION OF FAMILY. BUT THEY WANT ALL THESE TO BE TREASURED AND GO TO NEW HOMES. All items are Selling AS IS and ALL SALES ARE FINAL. NO WARRANTY OR GUARANTEE OF ANY KIND either expressed or implied by the Seller or Auctioneers. Statements made Day of Sale take precedence over written advertisements. NO EXCEPTIONS.
