Brough Superior SS100 Pendine

Lot # 351 (Sale Order: 51 of 99)

George Brough, second son of motorcycle manufacturer WilliamBrough, set up his own company in 1919 and purchased premises inHaydn Road, Nottingham to build machines powered by large capacityV-twin, JAP engines. He was assisted in this venture by friendsIike Webb and Harold Karslake who was to become his Chief Engineer.George Brough's desire to improve on the motorcycles built by hisfather, William, led him to the name Brough Superior and the legendwas born. The first production Brough Superior , featuring  a 986ccoverhead valve V-twin JAP engine, Sturmey Archer three-speedgearbox and  Enfield Cush Hub, was exhibited at the 1921 MotorCycle Show at Olympia. In 1923 the SS80 was introduced to thepublic powered by a side-valve, V-twin JAP engine and H.D. Teague, editor of 'The Motorcycle', referred to the Brough Superior as "TheRolls Royce of Motorcycles" after road testing an SS80. The sloganwas adopted by George Brough and used in subsequentadvertising.Competition success was fundamental to the development of themarque and in 1922 George Brough lapped Brooklands at over 100mphon 'Spit and Polish', a prototype for the SS80. Following anaccident it was rebuilt and renamed 'Old Bill' and, widelycampaigned by George, became one of the most famous racing machinesever. In 1924, highly regarded tuner and racing motorcyclist, BertLe Vack, developed the Val Page designed overhead valve JAP V-twinand used it in a Brough Superior motorcycle to set  a newWorld Speed Record of 118.98mph at Arpajon in France. At the 1924Olympia Show, the SS100 was announced to the public for the 1925season and benefitting from Le Vack's development work, each SS100was supplied with a written guarantee that it had been timed at100mph or better over the flying quarter mile, before delivery. Each SS100 was assembled to meet individual customerrequirements using the best components available and rarely wereany two exactly the same. In addition to the aforementioned JAPengines, Enfield hubs and Sturmey Archer gearbox, Brough developedHarley Davidson forks and had his own version made by the CastleFork and Accessory Company. Each motorcycle was assembled twice. The first assembly was for fitting of all components then themotorcycle was disassembled and all parts were painted or plated asneeded, then the finished parts were assembled a final time. Everymotorcycle was test ridden to ensure that it performed tospecification and was personally certified by George Brough. At the 1925 Motorcycle Show, the Alpine Grand Sport, an SS100with a full touring specification, was launched as well as thePendine racing model of which the featured motorcycle is anexample. Further speed records were set with George Brough beingtimed at 130.6mph in 1928 at Arpajon; unofficially the world'sfastest speed on a solo motorcycle and Bert Le Vack taking theofficial motorcycle World Speed Record at 126.75mph in 1929.This 1927 SS100 Pendine is believed to have started life as aworks racer before being sold by the Works to noted sand racingexponent Norman Buckley of King George Avenue, Blackpool on 1stJanuary 1929 and registered FR9745 on the 8th January, 1929. Theinvoice from George Brough shows  the frame number  R100('R' standing for rigid, as opposed to spring, frame) which is outof sequence with Brough Superior numbering  therefore stronglysuggesting it was a works 'special'. The engine JTOR/*81990/SD is avery early example of the JTOR racing engine and dates from 1927although, unusually,  has no year number stamped on it-further evidence of its works racing history. Buckley (who laterachieved note for setting speed boat records with his series ofJaguar XK powered craft named Miss Windermere, for which he wasawarded the MBE) competed extensively from 1929 until the end of1931 with the Brough both as a solo and with a sidecar in sandraces in the North of England achieving considerable success asevinced in the history file that comes with the bike. Buckley isthought to have sold the Brough in the early 1930s and in 1935 itwas known to have been used on the road. It is thought that theBrough was dismantled by 1952 as from 1953 the registration FR9745was being used incorrectly on another machine in South West London. The trail then goes cold until Buckley's Brough was owned, in the1970s, by Alex Forty from whom the vendor acquired it in 1978;dismantled and without a frame. The JAP JTOR engine wassubsequently fitted into a Norton CS1 frame and used successfullyin sprint events until the vendor decided to reassemble the Broughafter evidence of its special history started to emerge.  Afull restoration by world renowned marque expert Tony Cripps wasundertaken in 2011 with an exact replica of the missing frame beingcommissioned, using the correct materials and manufactured by SteveRaffills in New Zealand. The new frame was then numbered 3520 froma sequence issued by the Brough Superior Owners Club. The Pendine features the correct Castle forks, S

Lot # 353 (Sale Order: 53 of 99)

The Bonneville T120 was Edward Turner's last production designat Triumph. Launched in 1959 by Triumph as "The Best Motorcycle inthe World", the Bonneville T120 was aimed mainly at the lucrativeUS market where enthusiasts were demanding extra performance, butwas developed so quickly that it was not included in the 1959Triumph catalogue. The original Triumph Bonneville was a 650ccparallel-twin (two-cylinder) motorcycle manufactured by TriumphEngineering and later by Norton Villiers Triumph between 1959 and1974. It was based on the company's Triumph Tiger T110 and wasfitted with the same twin 1 and 3/16 inch Amal monobloccarburettors as standard, together with the high-performance inletcamshaft. It was initially produced with a pre-unit constructionengine which enabled the bike to comfortably achieve 115mph withoutfurther modification. Later T120 Bonneville used a new frame whichcontained the engine oil instead of using a separate tank; thisbecame known as the oil in frame version. The T120 engine, both instandard configuration and especially when tuned for increasedperformance, was popular in café racers such as TriBSAs andparticularly Tritons. This matching numbers T120R was built 7th December, 1965 anddispatched from the works on the 20th December to the USA. Havingbeen re-imported in 2014, it was comprehensively restored by aTriumph specialist. The frame has been powder coated, the tankre-painted, the top end of the engine completely rebuilt and fittedwith electronic ignition and new carburettors. Too many new partswere fitted to list here but there is a build sheet that comes withthis stunning example. It has only covered a few test miles sincethe work was completed and remains in absolutely excellentcondition throughout. It is supplied with a UK V5C registrationdocument, dating certificate and an MoT test certificate validuntil December 2015.?

Ariel 500cc Red Hunter

Lot # 356 (Sale Order: 56 of 99)

Red Hunter' was the name given to Ariel's range of sportingsingles; making its debut in 1932. Designed by Val Page, the enginewas a development of the overhead-valve single he had introducedsix years earlier and was carefully tuned for increased performancewith polished flywheels, a cylinder head boasting polished portsand combustion chamber and racing carburettor and magneto. The RedHunters were strikingly handsome machines with red fuel tank panelsand wheel centres and a tank-top instrument panel which includedspeedometer, oil pressure gauge and an inspection light. The 500cc Red Hunter was the first to appear and was also knownas the Model VH. It featured a four-valve cylinder head andfashionable twin exhaust ports. A 350cc, or Model NH, followed veryquickly but differed in that it featured an inclined cylinder and atwo-valve cylinder head. Later that year Ariel ran into financialdifficulties but was saved by Jack Sangster, whose family had beeninvolved with the company since the Victorian era. The factory andworkforce were slimmed down and Chief Designer, Val Page departedfor Triumph. His successor was Edward Turner who had alreadydesigned the ground breaking Square Four model for Ariel. Turnerrationalised the Ariel range to use as many common parts aspossible and the sloping engines were discontinued. The Red Hunterrange was extended down to the 250cc LH by reducing the bore sizeof the 350 to 61mm and the 500cc VH no longer featured a four-valvecylinder head. This very original, matching numbers, 1937 Red Hunter has beenin the vendor's ownership for the past 23 years and prior to that, was owned for a similar period by renowned historic car andmotorcycle racer, David Beckett. It has been fastidiouslymaintained in excellent riding condition and consequently featuresa number of small modifications for reasons of practicality such asa dual filament stop and tail light, more modern petrol taps and amore effective horn. The original parts have been kept and comewith the bike. The Ariel comes with a V5C registration document, buff log book, VMCC Dating Certificate, owner's handbook, a numberof special tools, current MoT test certificate (valid untilFebruary 2016) and full MoT history while in the vendor'sownership. The Ariel Red Hunter is rightly regarded as one ofthe finest sporting machines of the 1930s and the example offeredtoday presents a rare opportunity to acquire an unmolested examplewith excellent provenance and in ready to ride condition.

MV Agusta 750 F4 Serie Oro

Lot # 357 (Sale Order: 57 of 99)

Introduced in 1998, the MV Agusta F4was the motorcycle that resurrected the legendary name of MVAgusta. It was designed by Massimo Tamburini at the MV Agusta'sfamed Cagiva Research Centre in San Marino; Tamburini having beenpreviously  responsible for the design of the Ducati 916. Theengine of the new MV, a liquid cooled in line four cylinder withdouble overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, electronicmultipoint fuel injection and induction discharge electronicignition was designed to be made three different capacities; 749.5cc, 998cc and 1,078cc. It was influenced by the 1990-1992Ferrari Formula One engine and is one of few production superbikesto feature a four-valves-per-cylinder engine with hemisphericalcombustion chambers.  It is also unique in that it is the onlymotorcycle engine currently in production to feature radial valves,a feature taken from the Ferrari Formula One engine. Power outputof the initial model, the750, was 126bhp at 12,500rpm, enabling itto reach a top speed of 170mph with 0-60 achievable in 3.1 secondsand a standing quarter mile in less than eleven seconds. The first F4 model released to thepublic was the F4 750 Serie Oro on May 1999, of which only 300examples were produced and just twenty one of those imported intothe UK. With the bodywork resplendent in the traditional MV Agustalivery of red and silver, many parts such as the swinging arm, frame side plates and wheels were made of magnesium and anodisedgold - hence the name 'Oro' (Italian for gold). The fuel tank, fairing, seat cover, front mud guard and air box were made ofcarbon fibre which enabled the weight to be kept under 400 lb - anextraordinarily light weight for a road going superbike. The Showafront forks were specially made for MV Agusta and feature quicklydetachable axle clamps while the rear suspension was manufacturedby Sachs. Six piston (front) and four piston (rear) brake caliperswere provided by Nissin.  Contemporary road tests enthusedover the F4's incredible handling, and were confident that the newMV would be a success, securing the future of the MV Agustaname. The F4 750 Serie Oro was considered tobe one of the best sports bikes in the world at the time of itsrelease and the bike offered here today is number 167 of the 300produced. The vendor, a connoisseur of sporting motorcycles andcompetitor on the gruelling Paris-Dakar Rally, is the originalowner, having been fortunate enough to be selected from the waitinglist for the launch of the eagerly awaited new MV Agusta. The bikeis in as-new condition, having covered a mere 1,200km from new andused for long trips only. For the past few years the MV has takenpride of place in the vendor's sitting room; perhaps the idealstorage conditions. UK registered from new, the MV comes with a V5Cregistration certificate and we are informed by the vendor that afull service will be carried out before the auction, coupled with aMoT test certificate. This is an exceptionally raremotorcycle and, as the first example of the revived MV Agusta, issure to become very desirable and a true collector's item. It can, surely, only increase in value.

AJS Model 31 CSR 'Thruxton' (650cc)

Lot # 358 (Sale Order: 58 of 99)

The AJS Model 31 was made by Associated Motorcycles at theformer Matchless works in Plumstead, London. Developed in 1958specifically to capture the potentially lucrative US market, thelast Model 31 was produced in 1966. The AJS Model 31 was designedby Phil Walker, AMC knew that it had to be a 650cc but wanted touse as many cycle parts from the Model 11 as possible. The meantdeveloping a new crankshaft and primary chain case which alsoprovided the opportunity to add a Lucas alternator. In 1959 theModel 31 was redesigned and modernised as the De Luxe with a newfull cradle tubular duplex frame and a new cylinder head. Capable of 100mph performance, it was no surprice that motorsportbeckoned. The AJS Model 31 CSR designation officially stood forCompetition/Sport/Road with its distinctive 2 into 1 'Siamese'exhaust system and upgraded camshafts, the CSR was a highperformance motorcycle but still prone to leaks and vibration. Thefactory diverted Chief Engineer Jack Williams from AJS 7Rdevelopment to address the problems and modify the bikes for racingwith the result that Ron Langston and Don Chapman won theprestigious Thruxton 500 long distance endurance race on the AJSModel 31.With matching frame and engine numbers, this example is a veryspecial machine indeed. Ten engines were diverted from theproduction line and sent to the competitions department. Oneblew-up leaving nine tuned motors of which three were sent, inbikes, to the Isle of Man for exclusive use by the marshals at theTT and this is thought to be one of those three. Despite anincorrect tank fitted, the bike remains in good order and isreported to run well, the last owner using her regularly and formany years.?

Velocette MSS

Lot # 359 (Sale Order: 59 of 99)

Velocette is often seen as one of the 'high class' marques;something of a cut above the ubiquitous parallel twin and far morerefined than the average single-cylinder. The 499cc MSS is apleasant and practical sporting single. The later versions havecomfortable suspension and a broad spread of torque making the MSSa relaxed ride over longer distances. From 1948 Velocette turnedtheir attention to building the LE and discontinued the MSS but are-worked 500 returned in 1954 with all the modern conveniences ofthe time. Its output of just 25bhp sounds modest but the MSS madethe most of Velocette's excellent sprung frame which Cyril Aytononce described as 'virtually faultless'. Velocette's own telescopicfront forks provided superb steering with fully-adjustable rearsuspension provided by Woodhead-Monroe springs.Registered 18th March 1960, although according to factoryrecords both the engine and frame are dated to 1955, it is suppliedwith an MoT test certificate until January 2016. This is a finerunning and solid example although largely unrestored and inoriginal condition. It appears the bike was fitted with a  newclutch in 2009 and also has a small file of bills relating tomaintenance work. The body work is showing signs of wear but thefuel tank has no dents. The forks and the wheel rims are all ingood condition and the bike is generally corrosion free. It wasrecently fitted with a new battery and Amal Mono Bloccarburettor.

Velocette KSS Special (350cc)

Lot # 360 (Sale Order: 60 of 99)

A production roadster motorcycle, the KSS was modified with aracing clutch and tuned to achieve 90mph around the Isle of Man TTcourse, largely due to the excellent handling. Importantimprovements included the positive-stop foot operated gear changefrom the Velocette KTT production racing version. In 1936 Velocettedeveloped the KSS Mk. II which had a Velocette MK. V KTT basedchassis and a new engine with an alloy cylinder head. A touringversion, the Velocette KTS was also developed with 19 inch wheelsand matching mudguards.Slotting Velocette's wonderful overhead-camshaft engine intolater cycle parts has long been a well accepted practice amongaficionados of the Hall Green factory's products and this examplecombines a 1938 KSS Mk. II engine and a swinging arm frame commonto later motorcycles, in this instance, 1971. Well restored but nowenjoying the period patina that comes with use, it is offered by aknown collector and long-term enthusiast of the marque but willrequire a light service prior to use. This runs and drives wellused, until recently, in many club runs. Velocette Venom to Thruxton spec

Lot # 362 (Sale Order: 62 of 99)

Velocette is the name given to motorcycles that were made byVeloce Ltd, in Birmingham. One of several motorcycle manufacturersin Birmingham, Velocette was a small, family-owned firm, sellingfar fewer hand-built motorcycles than the giant BSA, Norton orTriumph concerns.  The Thruxton production model wasintroduced in 1965 based on the Venom with an advertised 41horsepower at the crankshaft with period tests clocking it at110mph without race tuning. The well-proven Venom was improved byVelocette designer (and owning-family member) Bertie Goodman tomuch acclaim. This Venom, first registered in August 1960, was 'Thruxtonised'throughout the mid 80s and has covered very few miles since then. With MoT test certificates since 1989 to help establish this, it isimportant to note that this was not a rebuilt bike but is in verygood condition with the recent addition of a new charging system.Offered with a V5 registration document and copies of the old MoTcertificates, this is an extremely desirable looking Venom andcompared to the Thruxton's value- would appear to be good value andvery desirable.?

Yamaha RD400 Daytona

Lot # 364 (Sale Order: 64 of 99)

The RD400 was the last of the famousline of twin cylinder two-stroke sports motorcycles produced byYamaha starting with the introduction of the RD350 in 1973, whichwas loosely based on their very successful production racingmachines.  Features carried over from the racers included thedouble cradle frame and much of the two-stroke engine. Upgradesover prior Yamahas included a reed valve induction system and afront disc brake.Yamaha's engineers incorporated someinteresting ideas into the power plant, such as a small seventhport in the RD350's induction system that fed directly from thecarburetor manifold. The port provided an extra shot of fuel andair for improved combustion chamber filling and scavenging, coolingthe piston crown. As a result of the induction system - along witha well-supported, low friction crankshaft and a six-speedtransmission, the RD boasted a relatively wide powerband and a topspeed just shy of 100mph. Most sporting two-strokes had very narrowpowerbands, so the RD350 was a significant advance, making it avery civilized ride. The reed valve system also improved the fuelconsumption, another plus as two-strokes were often verythirsty. The RD350, although better than mostof what was available, was not perfect. The front wheel had atendency to become airborne under hard acceleration, the seat wasuncomfortable after a few miles, and the oil tank leaked. Butperfection was not required by the hordes of young RD fans - justspeed, handling, acceleration and an affordable price, all of whichthe RD could deliver. The RD400, featuring a longer stroke, was introduced in 1975. There were many other improvementsincluding revised porting, different gear ratios and rubbermountings for the engine and disc brakes now on both wheels.Additionally, the engine was moved forward in the frame to curb thebike's tendency to lift the front wheel under accelerationThe RD400 proved popular and soldwell. It continued in production over the next few years with manydetail improvements ,when in 1979, Yamaha decided to celebrate itsdominance of road racing over recent years and commemorate itsracing stars, Kenny Roberts and Mike Baldwin, who were thendominating Daytona and AMA racing in general. In their honour thelast iteration of the 2-stroke twin, the RD400F, was named theDaytona Special. By 1979, U.S. emissions standards had grownincreasingly more stringent, but the Daytona Special met them. Theexhaust manifold contained vacuum-operated butterfly valves thatwere open during acceleration and normal running but closed andmostly blocked the exhaust when the throttle was shut, significantly reducing the flow of unburned hydrocarbons into theexhaust stream. All this made the Daytona Special run hotter, butthe shrouded cylinder head effectively aided cooling, in fact, theengine  ran quieter. Other improvements included a larger fueltank, lower seat height and an additional half inch of suspensiontravel. The foot-pegs now bolted above the exhaust system, insteadof below, for improved cornering clearance. The claimed poweroutput of 30bhp was sufficient to propel the RD400F to a top speedof 98 mph achieving a standing quarter mile in 14.15 seconds. The conventional wisdom holds thatEnvironmental Protection Agency mandates killed the US market fortwo-strokes, but it has been suggested that the manufacturers couldhave made two-strokes EPA compliant if they had really wanted to.While that might be true, it is probably fair to say that it wascheaper and easier to make four-strokes compliant with EPAregulations. Add the fact that riders were increasingly turningaway from two-strokes for more civilized four-strokes and thewriting was on the wall. Intended to commemorate Yamaha'sracing success, the Yamaha RD400F Daytona Special ended up,instead, as a monument to the two-stroke motorcycles that definedan era. This rare machine, built for the USmarket only and resplendent in Yamaha's racing colours of white andred, is a true collector's piece. Interested parties should notethat this motorcycle has been registered with a personalised numberplate which is being retained. A new registration has been appliedfor.Interested parties should note that this is a library image.Pictures of this motorcycle will be added shortly.

BMW R50

Lot # 365 (Sale Order: 65 of 99)

The first BMW motorcycle, the R32, waslaunched in 1923 and the flat-twin, or 'boxer' layout has becomesynonymous with BMW ever since. Designed by Max Fritz, it was veryadvanced for its day, being of unit construction and featuring arecirculating wet sump oiling system with a drip feed to the rollerbig -end bearings. This system was used by BMW until 1969, whenthey adopted a high-pressure oil system using shell bearings, whichis still in use today. The R32 was the basis for all futureflat-twin BMW motorcycles, a distinctive feature of which was thetransverse mounting of the engine where the cylinder headsprojected out from each side to aid cooling, like the earlierBritish ABC. The R32 also incorporated shaft drive which BMW hasexclusively used on its motorcycles ever since, until theintroduction of the chain driven F650 in 1994.With the introduction of the R12 andR17 in 1935, BMW pioneered the use of hydraulically dampedtelescopic forks on a production motorcycle and in 1937, ErnstHenne set a world speed record of 173.88mph on a supercharged 500ccoverhead camshaft BMW, a record that stood for fourteen years.Following WWII and the destruction ofBMW's Munich factory, motorcycle production did not recommenceuntil 1948 with the introduction of the 250cc R24. The flat-twinsdid not reappear until 1950 with the reintroduction of the R51, R60and R68 models, all of which featured telescopic front forks, plunger rear suspension and chromed, exposed drive shafts. With motorcycle sales falling inGermany in the 1950s and three of their domestic competitors goingout of business, BMW introduced a new range for 1955 with enclosedshaft drive and 'Earles' type front forks. These were the 26bhp500cc R50, the 30bhp 600cc R60 and the sporting 35bhp 600cc R69.BMWs of this period, due to their strong 'Earles' type forks withtheir inherent anti-dive capability, were considered ideal forsidecar use and were often attached to very stylish and attractiveSteib sidecars.According to our research, the enginenumber indicates this R50 is from the first batch of the productionrun and is in delightful, original and unrestored condition, savefor the recent fitment of new stainless steel silencers and arenovated horn. The vendor purchased it recently from a businessassociate who had owned it for two years and prior to that, forover thirty years, was in the ownership of a Mr Kenneth Plattonwho, it is believed, sourced the bike from classic BMW expertRobert Porecha of London. The registration mark XXC 647 is a Londonnumber, for which records, unfortunately, do not survive. Ready toride and enjoy, it comes with a V5/C registration certificate aswell as some old MoT test certificates included in the file.

Harley-Davidson Custom Chopper

Lot # 366 (Sale Order: 66 of 99)

Initially based on a Harley Davidson 1,450cc, this custom-buildhas incurred bills in excess of £80,000 and frankly- there is verylittle Harley left. Built by S.P Headon of Reading, the originalengine has been replaced with a 2,500cc R&R Cycle motor unitand the changes do not stop there; a 300 Section rear tyre mountedon 18x11" rims with fully adjustable air rear suspension and Bakersix-speed gearbox featuring right side belt drive and Spyke hightorque starter motor help to put the power to the floor, combinedto a Hi-Tech primary belt drive kit with heavy duty hydraulicclutch. Unsurprisingly a one-off exhaust system, which is partiallywrapped, has been added to a Monster S&S carburettor withthunder jets and a Hi-Flow air filter combined with Pingel Hi-Flowfuel tap.The fantastic one off paintwork is complemented by a bespokefuel tank with flush fitting caps incorporating the rev. counterand engine cylinder temperature gauge. Handlebar controls, featuring hidden clutch and brake master cylinder, can be found upfront above an Upside-down front end 23" front wheel, fixed to theone off bespoke frame with aluminium forward mounted footrests.Choppers can divide opinion but this one offered with such abuild sheet is mightily impressive and with the opportunity ofsaving over half the cost of the build that was undertakenirrespective of cost, is also mightily tempting!?

BSA Golden Flash

Lot # 367 (Sale Order: 67 of 99)

So it was with BSA in October 1949 when the firm announced the650cc A10 Golden Flash which would be on sale for the 1950 season.Triumph was at the root of BSA's panic - or, at least, haste.Edward Turner's pre-war 500cc 5T Speed Twin had, way back in 1937,set the pace for a new era of parallel twin motorcycling; a pacethat was about to be reset with the imminent launch of the 1949,34bhp, 650cc 6T Thunderbird. Not that BSA had been entirely caughtnapping. For three years, the company had been marketing a rivalparallel but not-quite-so-speedy twin in the shape of the 500cc BSAA7. Launched in 1946 (from what was essentially a 1939 pre-wardesign), the A7 was a robust and attractive rigid-framed bikedesigned and developed essentially by Herbert Perkins and DavidMunro but with engineering cues from Val Page who had mastermindedthe predecessor of the A7, the 1933 Triumph 6/1. Bombed out ofTriumph's Priory Street factory following the infamous raid onCoventry on the 14th November 1940 and with time on his handsbefore the new Meriden factory near Allesley, Warwickshire was upand running, Turner spent some time at BSA's Armoury Road site atSmall Heath, Birmingham and injected one or two of his own petdesign devices; notably, detachable rocker boxes in the nowfamiliar Triumph twin style. This excellent 1955 BSA Golden Flash has been in two privatecollections since being restored in the 1990's.  Fullymaintained and looked after, the vendor informs us that it is roadready and is a pleasure to ride.  Finished in the classic BSAgold with chrome petrol tank with red coachlines, this Golden Flashis supplied with a V5C registration document and, MoT exempt, thenew owner will just have to organise the free road tax to be ableto ride it away.?

Harley-Davidson Custom Rocker C

Lot # 368 (Sale Order: 68 of 99)

Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the first decade of the20th century, Harley-Davidson was one of two major Americanmotorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression.Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control andcompetition from Japanese manufacturers. They are noted for thetradition of heavy customisation that gave rise to the chopperstyle of motorcycle. Except for the modern VRSC model family, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classicHarley designs. In Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the softail frameis designed to look like the hardtail bikes of the past whilststill offering the comfort of rear suspension. The shock absorbersare positioned along the axis of the motorcycle, tucked away underthe transmission.   This Rocker C presented in unmarked brilliant blue with fantasticchrome-work and described as immaculate. Rickman Métisse (500cc)

Lot # 370 (Sale Order: 70 of 99)

Rickman motorcycles were produced from 1961 to 1976 by brothersDon and Derek Rickman who started their company in 1957 andformally made it into Rickman Bros Ltd. in 1962. . Initially theframe designs were for scrambles and then for road racing. Later,in 1966, road bikes were produced as well. The brothers had had many successful years in scramblers butwanted better machines to ride. As a result they combined theTriumph twin engine with BSA frame to form the Tribsa, fitted withNorton forks. By 1961 their machine, known as the Métisse (Frenchfor mongrel or crossbreed), had been developed to have their ownlight and elegant frame, nickel plated with glass-fibre tank, seatbase, tail unit and air-filter panels. The brothers then offeredtheir design to the industry who, unwisely,  turned it down sothey manufactured complete machines and kits themselves. A choiceof engines could be used, the most usual being Triumph, BSA andmore exclusively, Matchless. The standard of manufacture and finishwas top class making the machines highly popular with frequentcompetition success. We understand that this bike was built up from a kit supplied byMRD Métisse in about 1996. Using a 500cc Triumph Tiger T100Rengine, the bike is road legal and registered as  1969 Triumph500. It has had a recent overhaul including a new carburettor, anew Boyer electronic ignition, powerbox type system so no battery, new tyres and new wiring. Fitted with front/rear lights and brakelight, it comes with a new MoT test certificate and UK roadregistration V5C document. In very good running order, the bike hasa fibre glass fuel tank and body work that is still in goodcondition but the paint is showing signs of age. A sound exampleready to used on or off road.?

Royal Enfield 350cc Bullet

Lot # 372 (Sale Order: 72 of 99)

The Bullet name was first given toRoyal Enfield's sporting singles as far back as 1933 and post WWII,after the immediate calls for basic transport had been met, thedesire for new sports models was apparent. In 1948 Royal Enfielddebuted their new 350cc Bullet in the 1948 Colmore Cup Trial, causing a sensation as the bikes were fitted with swinging arm rearsuspension, then unheard of for trials use. While unsuccessful onits initial appearance, the new model soon showed its form andBullet mounted riders won gold medals later that year in theInternational Six Days Trial and were part of the winning BritishTrophy team. The Bullet followed Royal Enfielddesign conventions with its 'floating bush' big end and dry sumpoil tank contained within the crankcase, intended to warm the oilmore quickly than possible with a separate, externally mounted oiltank.  Engine dimensions of 70mm  x 90mm were the same asthe cooking, all-iron Model G but with an aluminium alloy headfitted and an increase in compression ratio to 6.5:1 to give apower output of 18bhp at 5,750rpm. The Albion gearbox was mountedflush to the engine, rather than in conventional plates, to createa semi- unit construction with fixed chain centres and a newtelescopic front fork of Royal Enfield's own design was fitted tocreate a most attractive and versatile motorcycle, as scrambles, trials and road racing versions were marketed alongside thestandard road going Bullets. In 1953 a 500cc version joined therange. The bore size was increased to 84mm but the compressionratio lowered to 6.2:1 to give a useful increase in power output to25bhp at 5,250rpm. Surprisingly the 500cc version sold in quitesmall numbers and is consequently a rare machine today. 1954brought a major styling change with the introduction of the'casquette', a die-cast alloy cowl which enclosed the top of theforks and also the headlamp and instruments while incorporating asmall pilot light on each side. For 1955 dual front brakes werefitted within a full width hub and in 1956 a new all-welded framewas introduced which no longer featured a cradle under the engine. The tooling for the old type frame was shipped out to Madras, whereEnfield had set up a subsidiary to produce the 350cc Bullet underlicence which remained largely unchanged until relativelyrecently.More changes came in 1959 with theadoption of small seventeen inch wheels for the 350 in common withthe new 250cc Crusader and in increase in power output to 20bhpthanks to an increase in compression ratio, a larger carburettorand new cams with higher lift. The 500 received a new large finnedcylinder head which became known as the 'Big Head' but there werefew changes thereafter until the Bullet was phased out in 1962,with the era of the sporting single coming to an end. This late type 1960 Bullet was fullyrestored from a basket case by a retired panel beater and had twofurther owners before being acquired by the current vendor. TheRoyal Enfield comes with a current V5C registration certificate anda VMCC dating certificate and is described as being ten out of tenby the vendor, who also informs us that the original Essexregistration number was successfully re-issued following therestoration. The superbly presented Bullet offered here is an idealmachine with which to enjoy club events and will no doubt rewardthe new owner with many miles of enjoyable motorcycling.

BSA A10 Golden Flash (650cc) 'Road Rocket' Special

Lot # 373 (Sale Order: 73 of 99)

This BSA is a delightful motorcycle and one that has clearlybeen well looked after and cherished. The previous owner hasincluded a number of improvements with the effect that it now showsa likeness to a Gold Flash Road Rocket Special. There is an anomalywith the identification numbers   however and it wouldappear that the engine/crankcases did not start life as a SuperRocket and that the frame has been over-stamped.  Lightre-commissioning may be required but the vendor informs us that itshould be running by auction day. ?

Douglas Dragonfly

Lot # 375 (Sale Order: 75 of 99)

The Douglas Dragonfly model Introduced during 1955, featured acompletely revised set of cycle parts housing an engine that, although clearly derived from the earlier unit, had been refined.Consequently a stiffer crankshaft assembly was fitted to a stifferset of crankcases. Pivoted front fork frame with conventional shockabsorbers, a first for Douglas and Earles forks replaced thetorsion bar sprung frame. The new model was well received by boththe press and public but the company's reliance on one model placedthem at a disadvantage, restricting their potential sales volume. The company was already in the hands of the Official Receiver whenthe Dragonfly was introduced and was sold to the Westinghouse Brakeand Signal Company in 1956, motorcycle production ceased in1957.Only 1,457 examples were manufactured including a handful of thetwin carburettor models fitted with the earlier Mk. V engine andmagneto Ignition. This is one of the final models manufactured and,as such, is a highly sought after motorcycle. Finished in red andblack and in excellent condition throughout, the bike has justpassed an MoT test to confirm its roadworthiness.
