Civil War Model 1850 staff officer sword with presentation on throat "In Memory E.S. Smith to Major George W. Roberts 1st Regiment Douglas Brigade". Sharkskin grip. Blade with E Pluribus Unum and U.S. is slightly dark. Metal scabbard has light staining and is missing screws on the mounts. Major then Colonel acting as brigade brigadier general was killed in action at Stone's River in 1862. Condition (Good). Size 38"

Silver gripped high grade sword manufactured by William Horstmann & Sons in Philadelphia. 90% luster on the U.S. marked blade. Iron proof on false edge. Original sword knot. 124th Regiment P.V. recruited in Chester county. Fought at Antietam and Chancellorsville. Some light surface rust on iron scabbard. Condition (Excellent).

Lot Of 3: Bolt Action Military Rifles.

Lot # 610 (Sale Order: 11 of 602)      

The first rifle is a Swiss Vetterli which was introduced in 1869. It has a 33" barrel and is chambered for the .41 Swiss rimfire cartridge. It is the first bolt action repeating rifle to be used as a military service weapon. It has a 12 round tubular magazine, blued finish, full length walnut stock, full length cleaning rod, and a trigger guard with spur. Rifle is in excellent, all original, condition. Barrel retains approximately 95% original factory blue with some light freckling. Near mint checkered walnut stock. Barrel bands are patina. Original military sights. Frame is a mix of blue and brown patina. Perfect action. Strong clean bore. All proper strong military inspector marks on wood and metal. The second gun is a Model 1893 Spanish Mauser. Bridge stamped "Berlin 1896". Caliber 8mm cartridge with a 30" barrel, blued finish and walnut stock. All metal surfaces are brown patina. Stock is excellent with usual bumps and some staining, but no cracks or chips. Bolt matches receiver, as does floorplate. Very good bore and action. Has a 1918 dated W.T.&B. leather sling and cleaning rod. The last rifle in this lot is a French Chassepot Model 1866 rifle. This is a needle gun, bolt action, single shot, chambered for the 11mm paper cartridge. Barrel length is 32.5", full stock, with two barrel bands. These were used in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 to 1871. The metal is finished in the white and is a smooth brown patina. All original. Very good original walnut stock numbered to gun. All matching numbers. Very good bore. Comes with an original bayonet and frog.

J. Baker English Sporting Musket.

Lot # 611 (Sale Order: 12 of 602)      

This is a percussion 1840 to 1850's era British made sporting musket, full stock, .70 smooth bore with a 40" part octagon-part round barrel. Has English proofs on left barrel flat. J. Baker stamp on sideplate. Has brass trigger guard, left side plate, wrist plaque and buttplate. Brass stock retaining thimble. Missing rod. Has a shell pattern carving at top of wrist. Slightly flared muzzle. Some chipping and cracks at forend. 2" loose piece of wood at face of sideplate. Metal is dark brown patina. No cracks in buttstock. No nipple. Hammer does not stay back. Bore needs cleaning. With a little attention to the stock and some mechanical tuning, this would be a good example of an English musket.

P.J. Malherbe & Co. Percussion Musket.

Lot # 612 (Sale Order: 13 of 602)      

Serial # 2247 Manufactured in Liege, Belgium. Strong rifled bore needs cleaning. It is a .62 caliber percussion with a 37" barrel finished in the white, four barrel bands, walnut stock, wooden cleaning rod, bayonet lug and sling swivels. All matching numbers. Wood is excellent with no cracks, but does have usual war dings. Perfect action. This is the type of rifle that found its way to the Confederacy from Europe as facilitated by the blockade runners. Missing the rear sight.

U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Musket.

Lot # 613 (Sale Order: 14 of 602)      

The 1855 musket was a staple arm of the Union during the Civil War. It was the first U.S. martial weapon to fire the .58 caliber miniball. This particular example was manufactured in 1860 and is so dated on lock plate. It was manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Armory and it incorporates the Maynard priming system. Features a 40" barrel with three barrel bands, military style Springfield rear sight, iron patchbox on right side and walnut stocks. Strong cartouche on left side of stock. Wood is very good with no cracks, just usual dings. Metal is basically brown patina. Perfect action, original nippl, smooth bore in nice condition, but could use a good cleaning. Original ramrod still intact.
Correction: This is a musket, not a rifle-musket

Burnside Model 1864 Civil War Carbine.

Serial # 14309 These carbines were manufactured from 1857 to 1865. Features include a 22" round barrel, .54 caliber percussion breachloader. This is a Fifth Model. Barrel retains approximately 90% original blue with some light freckling and dulling. Barrel band is brown patina. Original factory sights. Frame retains approximately 80% original case colors. Fire blue still present on receiver, block, and lever. Walnut stocks are in excellent condition, albeit finish is dull. Perfect working order. Strong bore with some minor abrasions. Fire blue still present on screws. Rear stock sling swivel. Breach block number does not match frame. A very high condition Burnside.

PA/KY Long Rifle.

Barrel is not signed. Lock is manufactured by Golcher. It is a percussion .38 caliber with a 34-1/2" full octagon barrel, full wood stock and double set triggers. Working condition. Wm. Jenks U.S.N. Model 1843 Rifle.

Lot # 618 (Sale Order: 19 of 602)      

This rifle was manufactured by N.P. Ames in Springfield, Massachusetts. Manufactured 1841 to 1842. This navy model features .52 caliber, smooth bore, 35" round barrel with bayonet lug. Has brass mountings. all metal parts finish bright except barrel browned and lock is case hardened. Barrel is stamped "Wm. Jenks/ U.S.N. 1843", "R.P." inspector mark, and "P" proof. 1,000 rifles were manufactured for the Navy contract of 1841. This rifle was period sporterized by shortening the stock. It is cracks at the wrist and missing sideplate screw. Strong inspector stamps on right side of stock. Original nipple. Not working. Very good bore. Rare Naval rifle that would warrant restoration.

U.S. Carbine Model 1833 Percussion Hall-North.

Lot # 621 (Sale Order: 22 of 602)      

Manufactured by Simeon North, Middletown, Ct. in 1839. Standard Model 1833 single shot, breechloading, smooth bore, percussion carbine in caliber .52. Iron mountings and barrel with brown lacquer finish. Adjustable trigger utilizing a screw through the sear. Rod-bayonet, finished bright, seated under barrel. Bayonet extends to 21-1/2" and is locked in place by a spring lock. Two bands with front band held by a stud band spring, the stud passing through a hole on the right of the band; the lower band is held by a band spring in front. Front sight, set 1-3/16" from the muzzle and open rear sight mounted 2" from the breech, set on the vertical center of the barrel. Weapon has an overall length of 45", a barrel length of 26-3/16" and weighs approximately 8 lbs. 3 oz. North manufactured a total 2,132 (M1833) carbines in 1832. North manufactured a total of 6,135 (M1833s) in .52 caliber from 1836-1839. This was the first U.S. martial percussion arm. This example remains in all original unaltered condition. All metal surfaces are a smooth brown patina. Very good original walnut stocks with no cracks or chips have a sling swivel on lower tang. Has a perfect cartouche on left side. Decent bore could use cleaning. Perfect action. The original Hall tool is in its compartment.
