Overview of 1931 Ford Model A Victoria Sedan. In 1938 Melvin (Slim)

Item Details

1931 Ford Model A Victoria Sedan. In 1938 Melvin (Slim) Rutherford from Whiting, Indiana was promoting an overhead valve conversion head that would provide a more efficient way to draw power from the venerable Ford 4-cylinder flathead engines. The Rutherford head was among several conversions being offered to racers and hot rodders alike and it was one of these conversion heads that led to the creation of this amazing 1931 Ford Model A Victoria sedan. The story of the car actually starts with the engine. Merv Criser, a retired Wichita fire fighter, bought a Rutherford head from a coworker for one hundred dollars in 1959. The owner didn't really want to sell the OHV head, but a financial problem (rod through the block) and a serious marital problem (he tore the engine down in his wife's laundry room) strongly influenced his decision to let it go. Merv stored the Rutherford head for three decades, until a close friend, who was an avid racing enthusiast, convinced him to part with this rare artifact from the early days of racing. The years passed by, and a decade later Merv re-acquired the Rutherford from the estate sale that followed the death of his good friend in 1999. Merv had his Rutherford back, and it was time to start a project that would properly showcase the conversion head. Since a four-cylinder engine equipped with a Rutherford OHV conversion would sure be something out of the ordinary, he wanted it in a Ford. But which one? Amazingly, the perfect car for the project came along at just the right time. The 1931 Vicky was an older restoration that had been done many years ago and located less than 30 miles from Wichita. It was in good running condition and driven under its own power to Merv's friend Tom Ruggles' shop. Tom helped perform the magic! Now it's a masterpiece of restoration with rust free body, perfect paint, leather interior and a contemporary air conditioning system installed for good measure. The Rutherford is mated to a 200.5 ci Model B engine which was modified to match up with the Rutherford head. Opening the hood produces awe inspiring gasps and further detail about the build can be found at www.RichPennAuctions.com. But it did get better. Dismantling the Vicky revealed a chassis and body that were in excellent condition, with no evidence of any rust or collision damage. The frame was unmodified and straight, and examination of the original sheet metal showed a Model A that had survived for eighty years with no significant deterioration. This was perfect because Merv wanted to be very close to original appearance when the restoration was completed.
