Overview of 1974 SAAB Sonett III

Item Details

Our RMSC Project Lisa (named for previous owner) is a ‘74 SAAB Sonett III, number 188 of the 2,500 built in 1974. This is the second refurbishment, done by the Rocky Mountain Saab Club; see work The original “restoration” was by Chips Barry of Denver, but the car was later vandalized after being sold.
Body is mostly stock except for the aftermarket sun roof and the Porsche Guards Red paint color. Overall, the paint is in great shape. The interior is as original as we could get it. The carpets are OEM pieces that were taken from another Sonett III. The door panels were rebuilt and all other interior trim was replaced with used OEM pieces. The seats have been re-upholstered by Stan Dave (Saab expert and former owner of Bolder Auto Interior.) The door and rear hatch seals were all replaced with new ones. New driving lights, incl. buckets were added and wired to the factory switch. To avoid future rust the inside body floor pans were treated with POR-15 before installing the carpets and seats. Many hours of work were required to install the proper heater controls, OEM radio & speaker, plus other items which were missing or non-functional. The outside of the floor pan/chassis was cleaned, wire-brushed, under-coated and sealed, not touching the previous sheet-metal repair work. Door lock button on the RH door is missing. The exhaust system is a new MSS system from the “Y-pipe” back. Other work includes a replacement RF brake caliper & new pads on both sides. The rear brakes are in good shape. The car is equipped with Bilstein shocks. The engine received an oil change and tune-up including new plug wires. The Weber carb was changed back to a rebuilt FoMoCo unit. It might be better to go back to the Weber carb (included). The engine runs strong although there is a recent oil leak at the balance-shaft seal. See the car run and drive on YouTube
