Exceptional carved marine ivory grip with fluted whalebone shaft showing abalone shell inlay (probably from California to N.W. Coast). The hilt shows a carved hand holding a whale tooth. Turn ferule in marine ivory separates fluted whale bone shaft which connects half-way down to turned light colored hardwood. Age cracking and larger stress cracks from use as a cane. Condition is good and we would date this cane 1850s - 80s, at the latest. 38" from tip to end. Grip or handle is 4 1/4" across. Similar pieces in Flaydermans Catalog and Book.
