.36 caliber, 29 and 1/2 inch part round part octagonal barrel Signed N. and N.C. Whitmore Makers Mansfield, Mass”. (Stockle Listing: East Cambridge, Mass 1857-1860). Barrel finely browned with beaded central reinforce engraved with scrolling foliage and inlaid in gold with animals and splendid trophies of arms. The fine bolted front action percussion lock engraved with scrolling foliage is consistent with inlaid gold animals. Highly figured deluxe walnut half stock finely checkered at the wrist and fore-end, the barrel secured with two keys held by two elaborate gold plates. The stock decorated with a large incredibly ornate patchbox surrounded by engraved silver flag and drum and a splendid American eagle. The butt with a silver panther, cheekpiece with trophy of arms and silver stag and hound on left of butt. The silver sideplate formed as ducks and animals. Condition throughout is excellent retaining most all original brown on barrel and varnish on stock, with silver showing little or no wear to the ultra fine engraving. This rifle is possibly the most ornate High Art 19th century American percussion rifle known and can only be compared with the F, W. Porter turret rifle serial number 405 exhibited at the New York Crystal Palace Exhibition. The Porter rifle is pictured on page 84 of Steel Canvas by Wilson. Another far less ornate rifle by Whitmore was presented by the state of Rhode Island to General Ulysses Grant. This rifle is illustrated in color on page 100 of Steel Canvas by Wilson. This is the most ornate American percussion rifle to be offered for sale in decades and is a true work of art in every respect. Provenance: The Collection of Archer Jackson. Sotheby Parke Bernet Los Angeles. 14 February 1992 Lot 27.
