.36 cal, 42 1/8'' octagon barrel with an oxidized bore. This rifle appears to be a very old nice reconversion to flint and is maker marked along the top of the barrel with a couple of vague script initials that are difficult to discern. The barrel and lock are a deep plum-brown patina showing scattered old moderate oxidation, some areas a bit heavier along the wood line. The barrel has some light geometric motifs at muzzle and flanking the rear sight and the lockplate is embellished with a small dove at rear. The brass fitting have mostly toned to a mild ocher patina showing some light tarnishing and a bit heavier verdigris along the sideplate and front of triggerguard. The fittings are quite nice consisting of a heavy nosecap, two faceted thimbles, tailpipe, triggerguard with single rear spur, crescent buttplate, attractive thin comb plate, lovely pierced patchbox and toe plate and solid decorative sideplate. The stock is further extensively adorned with silver inlays including four lozenges along either side of the forend, large plate on underside forend, flash plate above lock, bird, heart and drops along wrist and a fine scant cheekpiece plate and starburst inlay on left. The curly maple stock rates very good plus showing some scattered areas darkened from oxidation leaching, 2'' sliver missing along left edge of forend and some other scattered thin drying cracks. The stock otherwise exhibits wonderful fiddleback grain figure throughout and there is a final adornment of a lightly carved foliate flourish on the left side of the butt. What is likely the original ramrod is present and the rifle is sighted with a fine v-notch rear sight and silver blade front. Equipped with double set triggers, the lock will require mechanical attention as the triggers do not set and the lock does not cock. Though having suffered a bit from some poor storage, this rifle was a very fine piece in its day and still retains its original charm. (13C12039-16) {ANTIQUE} (1200/1800)
