A charming and finely preserved Byzantine oil lamp filler, dating to the 4th–6th century A.D. This bronze vessel is crafted in the stylized form of a frog, featuring a diamond-shaped head, prominent ears, two feet along the sides, and a tail that serves as a pouring spout. It was used to fill terracotta oil lamps, one of the primary sources of indoor lighting in the Byzantine world. The piece remains in fine condition, exhibiting attractive patina and well-defined form. Lamp fillers like this were essential for refueling oil lamps in daily life. During the Byzantine era, olive oil lighting was common in homes, churches, and monasteries. Functional yet decorative, this frog-shaped filler adds a unique zoomorphic character to a practical object, reflecting the artistic flair of Byzantine domestic tools. Dimensions : 6” L X 1” H Bronze sickles like this were essential tools in Bronze Age Europe, where metalworking had not yet become widespread. While bronze swords were status symbols for the elite, the more attainable sickle served a dual role: harvesting crops and, when needed, serving as a weapon. The wear and nicks along this blade suggest it was used in both capacities. Its survival, especially with the hook intact, marks it as a rare and valuable piece of prehistoric life.
