Item Details

THAMES SKIFF circa 1870s. From about 1860 to the first World War (1914) Thousands of this type of boat were built by the various boat yards that lined the upper Thames River in England. Their popularity declined after 1920 and almost all the boats were cut up for fire wood during the 1930s depression. This (AA34) top-of-the-line model did survive mostly intact but in poor condition. The boat was built sometime in the 1870s by the well-respected firm of E. Messum for the Edgar family whose motto (Maun Do It) could still be seen on the oars prior to the restoration. This motto dates from 1306 when Robert Bruce King of Scotland with the help of Sir Richard Edgar murdered his rival John Comyn in the chapel of a monastery. The Firm of E. Messum was located in Richmond England and at the height of their business employed about 60 people during the winter and about 120 people during the busy summer months. The facilities include a hotel, workshops and storage sheds for 1,200 boats. Besides storing and maintaining a large private and rental fleet the firm was busy building boats for the various Kings, Queens, Emperors, Sultans, Heads of State etc. After being in business for about 70 years the firm finally closed its doors in 1937.
