Overview of Early Apollo 13 Lunar Module LO-2 Star Chart

Item Details

An 8-1/2" diameter Apollo 13 Lunar Module LO-2 (Liftoff-2) star chart consisting of a light orange star disc below and a semi-transparent rotating disc above. The rings on the outer disc signify what stars would be seen through the Optical Telescope at certain times during the stay on the moon. Star charts like this were used on every lunar landing mission to orient the LM just prior to liftoff. The strange thing about this star chart is that it is dated for a launch on March 12, 1970, one month before the actual launch date. Maybe it was an early version used for training purposes. Charts like these were to be used in case the Lunar Module had to leave the moon's surface within two hours before liftoff from the lunar surface. Each Lunar Module carried two similar star charts - this one for an immediate liftoff, and another for liftoff after the stars had precessed across the sky during their stay on the moon. This star chart was used in the Lunar Module Simulator and was no doubt handled by Lovell and Haise during their training. Nice shape. Extremely uncommon. Estimated Value: $200 - $300
