This is a very scarce example of a presentation percussion smooth bore rifle made exclusively by the now virtually extinct Hmong people who lived in Vietnam and were strongly allied with American fighting forces during that war. Being a nomadic people the Hmong had always been persecuted and constantly forced to move from place to place by their SE Asian and Chinese neighbors before, during, and especially after America's withdrawal from Vietnam.Known widely for their oddly shaped "Monkey" guns used both by them and the Montagnard tribes for hunting and defense this type rifle differed greatly in that it is made in a more recognizable percussion rifle configuration using a full butt stock instead of only that of a pistol grip. The other very discernable difference is that they are made to a much higher quality while still being entirely jungle made, by hand, without the use of modern machinery.Working alongside American Special Forces personnel most extant examples of these rifles had been presented to and are primarily found in the estates of Special Forces veterans.Complete in every way and not missing any of its original components The lock stock and barrel are made of brass, hand carved and adorned hard wood stock, and an all steel barrel of approximately .30 caliber diameter. Attached to the stock are all steel made sling swivels employing a sling made from what appears to be a U.S. made length of nylon strapping of some sort. Still attached to the trigger guard is a piece of cloth which was used for patch making. Also attached by string is a pan pick and a strip of canvas reinforced naugahyde which acted as both a nipple protector and most likely to keep rain water from fouling the rifles powder charge.Condition is overall excellent.
