Our Assessment: The Glock 19 Gen 2 is a compact, striker-fired, polymer-framed semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm. Introduced in 1988, it built upon the success of the original Glock 19 while refining ergonomics and durability. The Gen 2 retained the same overall dimensions and 15+1 round capacity but introduced an improved checkered grip texture without finger grooves, offering a more universal fit for shooters. The frame lacked the accessory rail found on later models, giving it a sleeker profile. The pistol featured a 4.02-inch barrel, Glock’s signature ""Safe Action"" system with three passive safeties, and standard polymer sights, though many users opted for aftermarket upgrades. Like its predecessor, the Gen 2 was lauded for its reliability, corrosion-resistant finish, and ease of maintenance, making it a favorite among military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters worldwide.
Durability and simplicity defined the Glock 19 Gen 2, contributing to its reputation as a near-indestructible sidearm. It excelled in high-round-count endurance tests, functioning reliably in extreme conditions with minimal lubrication. The lightweight polymer frame reduced fatigue, making it an excellent choice for concealed carry, duty use, or recreational shooting. Over time, the Gen 2 became a sought-after model for collectors and Glock enthusiasts, particularly as Glock moved to newer generations with added features like finger grooves and accessory rails. Its no-frills, utilitarian design remains appealing to those who appreciate the classic, battle-proven reliability of early Glock models.
