This is a rare, private purchase example of the Iron Cross 1st Class (EK1) from the First World War, featuring a fitted and straight pin back, usually an indicator of a higher-grade, non-issue manufacture. The reverse is stamped “800”, denoting silver content, with no additional maker mark present. Private purchase EK1s were acquired by soldiers who desired a more elegant or durable version than the standard issued piece. These examples, often crafted with higher silver content and finer finishes, are widely considered superior to field-awarded versions. The shape and premium construction make this a standout example among collectors. Condition shows light oxidation to the obverse, with minor loss to the front finish, but the cross retains strong definition and full integrity. This piece represents one of only ~218,000 EK1s awarded during the conflict, compared to over 5 million 2nd Class awards, and remains a highly sought-after symbol of Imperial German military valor.
