Item Description: Translate description
Mixed material from the Pacific theater and the home front in WWII. Associated with the service of US Army Air Force SSGT Alphonse M. Rose Serial No. 37341596. He served in the 20th Air Force in the Pacific and was from the Wichita, KS area. He graduated from St Joseph’s College and Military Academy in Hays, KS in July 1939. Collection is mostly archival, with some patches and a souvenir bring back knife. Includes: 1) Borang Bolo Knife w/scabbard. Likely Philippine made. Measures 21” in scabbard. 2.5” wide. Knife alone is 18” long. Unmarked iron blade. Brass hilt. Carved wooden handle ( of a clenched fist). Two halves of scabbard secured with leather . 2) 4 pages of rank and unit insignia (no glow under black light). The rank insignia are mounted on one page w/notes and loose on another page. The other 2 pages of insignia have a pair of different 2nd Air Force Insignia, and another page has the 7th and 20th and US Air Force. PFC, CPL and Ruptured Duck insignia on another page. Five SGT chevrons on last page (not affixed to page). 3) Group of 10 original photo prints 4”x5” and smaller taken in the Pacific. He was in the Mariana Islands, so Saipan, Tinian and Rota are where these were likely taken. 4) Christmas on Saipan menu circa 1944/45 5) Christmas Wishes page that was mailed home, with poem and images of Tinian Bay an Village of Sinojava?. 6) Typed incoming message, 20th Air Force. Classification “Clear” Also in same sleeve is a soldier life insurance pamphlet and a typed scrap of lined paper with “Total Enemy Killed to Date 9-3-45 18,377” and “Total killed since organized resistance ceased on Guam DO August L944 7,393” 7) Letter and cover postmarked Oct 20, 1945 from S/SGT Rome to his wife. Was on the first B-29 flight from Guam to Washington DC. 8) Standard Army Air Forces Certificate of Appreciation and pin for Alphonse M. Rome for War Service from Hap Arnold. W/card and pin. 9) Japanese Language Guide. First Level. Special Services Division. Army Service Forces. War Department. TENTATIVE TM 30-341. Complete. 10) Unused V-Mail in pristine condition. 11) Brochure, A Regular Army Career. 12) 4 pages from wartime book/presentation on Incendiary bombs and B-29’s. 13) Leather “My Ration Book” war ration wallet. 4.5”x5”. 14) Postwar Brochure: Wichita and Sedgewick County Escaping the H Bomb. Civil Defense Map of Action. 15) Booklet, “Memo on the Marianas” J.I.C.P.O.A. Complete. Written on cover: “Pass Around as there is only a limited number” 16) Surrender leaflets. 5x depicting B-29 bombers on front with Japanese text on back. 17) Surrender leaflet: 1x depicting President Harry Truman on one side and Japanese officials on other side. 18) Page with the same two leaflets attached to translation. 19) Newspaper, The Wichita Beacon. Monday May 7, 1945 Extra Edition. “VICTORY GERMANY SURRENDERS!” Great condition. Folded for many years, would be great in a WWII display. Folded but overall measurements 17”x23” Please see pictures for better detail.
