Item Details

* Rare I. Jennings, Engraved Repeating Takedown Sporting Muzzleloader, .62 cal, s/n 31, muzzleloader, brl length 36" round, very good plus condition, flintlock repeating action. This is a wonderful example of a very rare three shot repeating smooth bore take-down flintlock muzzleloader. It is believed that less than 100 of these firearms were produced in varying configurations. This example has a detachable wire form steel stock with a central oval burl wood pillow form which on the right side has a German Silver inletted oval engraved with a resting stag and tree and a double line ornate border surrounding it. Just above that is stamped the number "2244" into the walnut oval. The brass frame and pistol grip are one piece being retained to the wooden forend with a screw on either side having engraved heads. Both screw heads show slight deformation with the left side head showing more than the right. The left side brass flat is engraved with a boar head surrounded by a circular formed French hunting horn in the center and a floral motif at the rear with a single line border edge along the top, bottom and rear and an ornate double line on the front edge. The top of the frame has an engraved sunburst at the leading edge with the right side rear flat having a plume and leaf motif. The trigger guard bow is engraved with the form of a pair of angels wings and is retained by a single engraved screw. The forend cap is German silver and engraved as well. The barrel is retained using a standard wedge of the time period with the head showing some deformation. The removable barrel transitions from octagonal to round at a wedding band approximately 12" from the breech. There is also a fortifying bolster band located just forward of the forend cap. The top of the barrel flat is marked in a single line "I. JENNINGS, PATENT, N. YORK. NO 31". The front sight is a single bead showing some deformation with the rear of the barrel having an open trough. It is engraved on either side flat with a leaf motif band and is engraved on the three sides of the barrel flats just forward. The lock plate, hammer and flash powder vessel are all engraved with star burst, leaf and floret motifs. The lock is marked "I JENNINGS" and the powder vessel is marked "PATENT". The unusual firing mechanism is similar to that found on the Ellis-Jennings repeating common rifle with this example housing three superposed charges in the barrel and the lock sliding linear front to back indexing with a lock stop dog leg which covers the second and third touch hole which rotates vertically to fire the next round. The two stops are marked with the one closest to the rear bearing a number "1" and the second with a number "2". The firearm is in very good condition for its age with all of the touch holes being relined at some point. The metal surfaces show flash pitting present mostly on the slide bar and surrounding areas, at the bolster and with some freckling and a few light handling marks scattered throughout. The brass frame has a nice warm patina with some light handling present. The wire stock also shows some light pitting. The bore has shine with some areas of light surface pitting present. This is a beautiful example of an elegant gentleman's sporting three shot repeating muzzleloader.
