serial #1409, .44 American, 8" ribbed round barrel with a very good bore which shows strong rifling but with scattered light pitting its full length. The metal surfaces on this fine early martial Smith & Wesson retain about 98-99% excellent quality factory re-nickel, the loss being a few very sparsely scattered spots of extremely light flaking or bubbling. The bottom of butt indeed has the factory "(star)" marking and the inside of the grip frame shows two refinish dates, the first in 1914, the second in 1924. Both trigger and hammer have toned to a brownish patina but the bow of the guard shows some good smoky color case-hardening. The smooth walnut grips rate very good with a faint left-side cartouche, their fit is slightly "under" and they are numbered to gun "2012" (which was indeed a nickel U.S. First American as well). The "U.S." atop the barrel is still visible albeit somewhat faint, the left side "A" inspector's marking has been lost atop the top strap but a ghost can be seen in the proper location on frame, and the right side "P" marking is faint and partial on the barrel but has been lost to the refinishes at the rear of recoil shield. As-mentioned, this example has the early oil hole on the underside of the extractor housing lug. This arm is listed by serial number in Smith & Wesson American Model

GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer's home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence.
