Sn: U163248. This is a example of an very scarce WWI trench shotgun manufactured by the Remington/UMC company under a U.S. Army contract. These were only produced for a very short time circa WWI with most being reconverted back into riot or sporting shotguns over time. Original examples are found in this serial number range (117731-165566) and are considered the apex of a U.S. martial shotgun collection. These have the factory blued finish, and walnut slide handle, buttstock and handguard mounted on top of the barrel. The front underside of the receiver is stamped with the Remington factory serial number of "U/162910". (Correct U prefix)The top of the barrel is correctly marked (under the handguard) "Model 10-A REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO./REMINGTON WORKS, ILLION NEW YORK USA/PATENTED FEBRUARY 3, 1903, AND MAY 16, 1905." The barrel is also correctly roll marked with the Remington, circled "REP" factory proof along with the matching serial number "164853" stamped upside down on the lower right rear side. The action bar is marked "Trade REMINGTON Mark" and the lower is marked "Remington UMC" in small circle with "Trade Mark" under it. The barrel is fitted by means of 3 screws, which were secured into 3 transverse grooves milled into the underside of the barrel and a 4th vertically through the adaptor, with a matte blued bayonet lug that lacks the standard "Eagle Head" proof on the front end. The left side of the receiver is stamped with an U.S. Ordnance "Bomb and Flame" proof over "U S". It has an oil finished ribbed pump handle and buttstock with a sling swivel attached to the front end of the magazine tube and the lower underside of the stock. The buttstock has a smooth pistol grip shape with a stamped steel, serrated buttplate. There is evidence of the barrel being factory shortened as per the Army contract by in line in the bore Approximately 3 1/4" from the muzzle under the bayonet lug attachment. The correct wooden handguard and and sheet metal lip are reproductions added by the consignor for display. Bore is very good/bright, action is smooth, wood is very good/sound, Remington UMC plastic buttplate is very good, Blue is mostly all there with handling wear mostly on the barrel and action bar. NRA Condition-Good. ++. C&R Firearm.
