Fine condition - revolver - 6" oct ribbed steel barrel - smooth rosewood flare square butt grips; both grips remain in very good to Excellent condition with flaking top coat and minute marks to left grip bottom - retains about 65% blue finish mottled with brown age freckling and balance to soft grey patina on grip and underneath frame - Markings: crisp & legible- single line Smith & Wesson barrel address - cylinder marked with patent dates - Sights: silver round blade front sight/rear sight notched in cylinder stop - named Civil War revolver carried by Thomas Hayes Windle of the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteers until wounded in 1862- purchased in 2015 during the auction of the Pennock Family Militaria, Arms & Ephemera Collection of Coatesville, PA - Thomas Hayes Windle (1833-1907) Musician in the 97th Pennsylvania Regiment was wounded and returned home to Coatesville in 1862. Upon his return he joined other civilians in providing support, supplies and services to Union forces fighting at Gettysburg. Mustered as a Corporal with Myer's Independent Pennsylvania Civilian Cavalry in 1863. Following the war Windle was active politically in the "Iron Town" of Coatesville as an inventor and successful in the hardware business.- a.k.a. "No. 2 Old Army" - popular sidearm of the Civil War, however never officially purchased by the army - tip-up barrel - 6 shot unfluted cylinder - SA - spur trigger - Allen pistol sock - Yr.
