The grips exhibit some discoloration but are in solid condition. The screw heads are sharp, and the markings are crisp. Overall, this pistol rates in about Excellent condition for its age.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 1913 was the company's first semi-automatic pistol, designed specifically for the proprietary .35 S&W Auto cartridge. The pistol featured innovative design elements, including a concealed hammer and grip safety, and was produced in limited numbers from 1913 to 1921. The 5th Type variation, as seen in this example, represents one of the later refinements in the series, making it a desirable variant for collectors.

With about 95% of its original finish intact and only minor wear, this is an outstanding example of an early American semi-automatic pistol. The discoloration in the walnut grips is typical for a firearm of this age but does not detract from its historical appeal. Given the relatively low production numbers and the unique caliber, these pistols are highly sought after by collectors of early auto-loading handguns.

For collectors of early Smith & Wesson firearms or historical semi-automatics, this Model 1913 is an excellent acquisition. It represents a pivotal moment in S&W’s history and remains a fine example of early 20th-century firearm design.
