Iron mounted Starr 1812 pattern cavalry saber. The leading sword maker in America from 1798 to 1830, Nathan Starr of Middletown CT. M1812 enlisted mans cavalry saber is one of about 10,000 such pieces made under the Starr contract of 1812-1813. Sharp curve to the single edge, non-fullered 33 3/4" steel blade with a pronounced clipped point. Pronounced angle to the iron hilt and a wide opening between grips and the iron guard, shaped in a stirrup pattern. The guard is pierced near the pommel for a sword knot. Stamped on the obverse ricasso. “P (proved) / HHP ( Inspector Henry H. Perkins, Starr Swords, 1810-1817) / N.STARR” in sharp, crisp marks. "P" stamped on guard. Blade exhibits a molted dark gray patina. Hilt/guard exhibits a molted brown patina. Remnants of the flaking leather grip wrap and washer remain. No scabbard. Has the look of a "Barn Find". Knucklebow is pierced near the pommel for a sword knot.
