Dated 1784. Size: 6" x 8 1/2". (1) 19th C. Engraving Print of Dickinson with copy of signature. Maker marked by J.B. Forrest. Size: 10 1/2" x 6 1/2". (1) US Constitution Bicentennial Commemorative John Dickinson First Day Cover envelope. Dated 1987. John Dickinson, known as the "Penman of the Revolution", was a founding father from Pennsylvania. He was a delegate in the First & Second Continental Congress. He authored the 1774 "Petition to the King", 1775 "Olive Branch Petition", and "Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania". During the vote for the Declaration of Independence he abstained, favoring diplomacy over violence due to his Quaker upbringing and was worried the declaration would escalate the Revolutionary War. Even so, Dickinson served as a Pennsylvania militia officer during the war. After the British were defeated and the colonies were free, he served as the President of Delaware from 1781-1783 and President of Pennsylvania 1782-1785. He was also a signer of the US Constitution. Dickinson passed away in 1808 and is the namesake of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania.
