WWII USAAF 551st BOMB SQUADRON NAMED GROUPING
WWII USAAF 551st Bomb Squadron Medal, Insignia, and Photograph Grouping. Named to Staff Sergeant William E. Salkeld 39277913. (1) Distinguished Flying Cross attributed to Salked, unnamed. (1) Air Medal attributed to Salkeld, unnamed. (1) 551st Bomb Squadron Pocket Patch. Silkscreen on canvas construction. (1) 8th Air Force Shoulder Patch. Embroidered on wool construction. (1) Aerial Gunner Wings. (1) Air Crew Wings. (1) Set of Dog Tags named to Salkeld. (1) Ribbon Bar with DFC, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and ETO Campaign ribbons. (1) Collection of Photographs. Includes photos featuring Salkeld, aerial combat, B-17 nose art, fellow airmen, and more. (1) Collection of paperwork named to Salkeld. Includes training certificates, orders, Air Medal citation, service records, and more. (1) Collection of scrapbook pages. Includes newspaper articles about Salkeld being awarded the DFC, his return home, bombing missions he participated in, European bank notes, and more. (1) Collection of online research papers named to Salked. Staff Sergeant William E. Salkeld was born September 14, 1923 in Geneva, Ohio. After high school graduation Salkeld enlisted in the USAAF and underwent basic training in January 1943. In early June 1944 he arrived overseas and was assigned to the 551st Bomb Squadron, who were stationed in Suffolk, England. From July 8, 1944 to November 4, 1944 Salkeld took part in 35 bombing raids before he was rotated back to the United States, mostly serving as a ball turret gunner in B-17G "Mah Ideel". During this time he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. He was discharged from the USAAF October 6, 1945. Once out of the Armed Forces he worked as an electrician and continued in the field until his retirement in 1990. William Salkeld passed away on April 12, 1991.
