With lifter inscribed "J Lyle". Believed to be the property of J. C. Lyle, member of Butch Cassidys gang who was arrested for the Union Pacific train robbery near Wilcox, Wyoming, June 2, 1899. Lyle was a member of the "Wild Bunch", a former Rough Rider and elusive train robber. He was also in the "Hole in the Wall" gang which was active at the turn of the century. Lyle was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1898 when he enlisted in the Rough Riders. He was at San Juan Hill with Roosevelt and gave his home as Georgetown, Colorado upon enlisting. In 1899 he turned to crime as a member of Butch Cassidys gang. Lyle served his time and lived quietly until his death in 1962 in Colorado. Papers state the rifle was bought from undisclosed family members by a collector. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Fair to good overall condition, showing frontier wear, carry and use as well as exposure to the elements. The metal surfaces are a patina finish with faint traces of finish mixed in where protected. 26" octagon barrel, full mag, rifle butt with thumbprint dust cover (2nd model), No. 37899. Note: 26" are scarce in 2nd model. Good markings and fairly crisp edges. A number 2814025 is electric pencil engraved by the left top of frame (museum collection number) The wood shows great "pommel wear" on the forend from being carried many years across the saddle. The butt stock is well worn with many imperfections from carry and use. The sling swivels have been removed and a piece of leather inlet into back swivel area. Action good and bore fairly shiny. From a major western history collection. Condition is NRA Good.***Antique Firearm***
