Item Details
Very good condition internal mag bolt action rifle. 24" medium-heavy contour bull barrel, bore appear to be clean, shiny, and bright with excellent rifling. The blued finish on the receiver, bolt, mag plate, trigger, and trigger guard are in very nice condition, appears to be near 97% with some light surface rust spots. The satin grey finish on the barrel is in great condition showing some wear and light surface rust. One piece laminated stock with some dings, bangs, and scuffs, no chips or cracks. Bolt action is smooth and has a great pop. Trigger is smooth and easy. Comes with two small pic rails. It has a Winchester thick rubber buttplate. This would be a great addition to any collection or arsenal!! The Winchester Model 70 Coyote chambered in .223 Ackley Improved (.223 AI) is a highly specialized, custom-tailored setup that combines a classic varmint-hunting rifle with a beloved high-efficiency wildcat cartridge. Because Winchester never manufactured the Model 70 factory-chambered in .223 Ackley Improved, any rifle in this exact configuration is a custom or gunsmith-modified firearm. A breakdown of what makes this specific combination unique includes the following details: ?? The Rifle: Winchester Model 70 Coyote The factory Model 70 Coyote was engineered as a crossover between a traditional benchrest rifle and a mobile varmint setup. The Action: Depending on the exact year of production, the Coyote features either Winchester’s standard short-action or their highly regarded "Controlled Round Push Feed" (CRPF) bolt, which blends the smooth feeding of a push-feed with the reliable extraction of a classic Mauser-style claw. The Barrel: It originally came equipped with a 24-inch medium-heavy contour bull barrel. This design maximizes stiffness and heat dissipation for long strings of fire while paring away the excessive weight of a full-size target barrel. The Stock: Standard Coyote models feature a rugged, distinctive brown laminated wood stock with a reverse-taper, wide-bottom fore-end. This wide profile acts as a built-in flat platform, making it exceptionally stable when resting on sandbags, shooting sticks, or a bipod. ?? The Cartridge: .223 Ackley Improved (AI) The .223 Ackley Improved is a "wildcat" modification of the standard .223 Remington cartridge, popularized by legendary gunsmith P.O. Ackley. The Geometry: A standard .223 chamber is reamed out to straighten the body taper and drastically sharpen the shoulder angle to 40 degrees. This modification maximizes internal case capacity. The Performance: The added case capacity yields a velocity boost of 100 to 200 feet per second (FPS) over standard .223 Rem, placing its performance impressively close to a .22-250 Remington while using significantly less powder and causing less barrel wear. Fireforming: One of the greatest advantages of the Ackley Improved system is that you can safely shoot cheap, standard factory .223 Remington ammunition in a .223 AI chamber. When fired, the intense pressure forces the brass to expand and "fireform" perfectly to the sharp, 40-degree Ackley shoulder, leaving you with custom brass ready to be handloaded for maximum performance. ??? How this Rifle Comes to Be Because Winchester only chambered the Model 70 Coyote in standard .223 Rem from the factory, this rifle exists in one of two custom forms: Re-reamed Factory Barrel: A gunsmith took a stock Model 70 Coyote in .223 Rem (which historically featured a 1-in-10" or 1-in-12" twist rate depending on the exact generation) and ran a .223 AI reamer into the factory chamber. Custom Re-barrel: The owner replaced the factory barrel entirely with a premium aftermarket match-grade barrel (like a Krieger, Bartlein, or Shilen) turned to the Coyote's original medium-heavy contour but explicitly chambered in .223 AI. This is often done to get a faster twist rate (like 1-in-7" or 1-in-8") to stabilize heavy, high-ballistic-coefficient 75-grain to 80-grain bullets for extreme long-range wind resistance.
