While many numismatic rarities are created by very small mintages, it seems that the 1927 ‘D’ Saint Gaudens $20 Double Eagle owes it’s rarity to the thorough job the US Government did melting them in the 1930's! While the coin originally had a mintage of 180,000 pieces, nearly all were lost to the melting pot. That is why one surviving example recently sold for $575,000! Our 1927 ‘D’ Double Eagle Proof has been struck as a collector’s desired proof specimen and has been clad in 31mg 24 KT Gold.
