Item Details
Model - Vehicles Beetle
Year1966
Purchased new in Texas and driven by John T.- who was in the Military and stationed out West. The car served him and his wife while they were stationed out West and completed quite a few cross-country trips until John settled in Northern Va. after retiring from the service. John then attended Law School at Washington & Lee passing the Bar Exam and embarked on his next career as an Attorney for the Federal Government maintaining a home in Northern Va. The V.W. was always garaged and maintained as a licensed and safety inspected vehicle requiring yearly inspections. The vehicle was used as a commuter vehicle in good weather during his Federal Government career. The vehicle still sports a Virginia November 2023 State Inspection sticker on its windshield. The vehicle was always maintained properly, and computer records of service are available from about 2002 or 127K miles till present. Interviews with John’s wife indicate paper carbon copies of work prior to that are not available currently. The service records from 2002 to present show all work performed by one of Northern Virginias premier Classic Air-Cooled V.W shop in Fairfax Va. Interviews and notes provided by John’s wife indicate that around 2000-2001 or at approximately 117K miles the Bug was totally refurbished including:
New 1500 cc motor along with refurbished transmission and transaxle
Bare metal resprays in original color along with new running boards, fender welting, rubber glass, headliner and door seals. The car was completely reupholstered with new seats, headliner, door panels and carpets.
12 Volt Conversion, 4-way flashers, rear window electric deicer.
Upgraded radio in original dash opening. (Original 6-volt radio conveys with car}
Upgraded shock absorbers. Later style 5 lug slotted steel wheels with 1968 style hubcaps and 165R 865 radial tires-except for spare.
Front and rear sway bars
Upgraded gauges which fit in the left/right dash pod including tachometer, amp gauge, oil pressure and temperature and fuel gauge.
Floors/pans appear to be original and solid along with original jacking posts still in place. Clean battery box area. The gas tank was removed and resealed.
There appears to be no evidence of any nose damage in the spare tire well area. A 1966 era wheel and bias ply tire is in the stowaway area along with the proper jack and handle. Several sets of keys convey with the car.
From 2002 to 2023 the vehicle appears to have accrued approximately 6500 miles according to service records. The service records from 2002 through present show regular maintenance, brake and carburetor service and electronic ignition conversion to the vehicle along with the front steering beam and suspension being overhauled. The car still has OEM style front and rear bumpers and overriders. The paint is in excellent condition for its age due to the cars minimal use the last 20 years and use of a ‘bra’ to protect the front end from road debris and stone chips. The front seats always had seat covers on them until we photographed the upholstery. Door gaps are uniform and doors close/latch with ease. Pop out windows work as they should. I have driven the car around our storage warehouse/access road - The electric choke works as it should and the entire car appears to be in excellent mechanical condition. All lights-wipers and horns were operational at the time of listing. The Auctioneer-a 70 year old car enthusiast who owned 60’s era 1200 and 1300 cc ‘Bugs’ can attest this car pulls strong through all gears, stops and handles well. Inspections are welcome. The vehicle is presently warehoused in Warrenton Va-30 miles West of D.C. Auction Co. will work with buyer and shipper/trucker if required.
