Item Details
Original Japanese woodblock print by Toshikata (1866 - 1908), titled Playing with a Ball: Women of the Keicho Era (1596 - 1615) from the series Thirty-six Selected Beauties (Sanjuroku Kasen), circa 1891 - 1894. The artwork depicts three women dressed in colorful and finely detailed traditional garments, engaging in an elegant ball game. Measuring 9 3/4 inches wide by 14 inches high, it demonstrates Toshikata's masterful composition and attention to decorative patterns. Some condition considerations include areas of foxing and backing present. Toshikata, a celebrated Meiji-era artist, was known for his poignant depictions of feminine beauty and the incorporation of historical narratives into his works. He studied under Taiso Yoshitoshi and gained prominence for illustrating bijin-ga, genre scenes, and war prints, leaving a significant impact on the Japanese art community.. .
