Item Details
Excellent old condition old SxS double barrel & Hunter One-Trigger selective single trigger shotgun. 30" barrels, smooth bores are clean, shiny, and bright with a little wear. 2 piece American walnut checkered stocks. Stocks have a darker brown finish. There are very few dings, bangs, or scuffs from age and use. There are no chips or no cracks. Barrels open and close smooth and easy. Overall the gun is tight. The barrels have excellent bluing, near 99% with a few wear spots and scuffs. The receiver has a nice light rainbowed patina. Has a leather anti-shock buttplate. This a must have addition for your collection or maybe even your arsenal!! Manufacture date: 1918 Due to age, Consult a gunsmith: If you are unsure about the firearm's safety, have it inspected by a qualified gunsmith to assess its condition. The Hunter Arms Co. L.C. Smith Specialty Grade 12 Ga SxS Double Barrel Shotgun is a classic American-made sidelock shotgun, highly regarded by collectors and shooters for its quality craftsmanship and intricate engraving. The specific value and detailed characteristics depend on its exact condition, original features, and year of manufacture. Key Features & Specifications The Specialty Grade was part of the post-1913 grading system. Specific configurations vary, as many L.C. Smith shotguns were custom built to order. Manufacturer: Hunter Arms Company (Fulton, N.Y.) produced these shotguns until 1945, after which production continued briefly under Marlin. Action: Side-by-side (SxS), sidelock design, and typically hammerless. Gauge: 12 Gauge, with various chamber lengths (standard was likely 2 3/4 inches, but some "Long Range" models had 3-inch chambers). Engraving: Standard Specialty Grade engraving features flowing scrollwork and game scenes, typically with a duck in flight on the right lock plate and a pair of quail on the left. Barrels: Available in various lengths, including 26, 28, 30, and 32 inches, made from high-quality steel (e.g., London Steel or Crown Steel). Trigger: Could be ordered with standard double triggers or the optional, and highly desirable, Hunter One-Trigger selective single trigger. Ejectors: Available with extractors or optional automatic ejectors (which add to the value). Stock: Typically featured a checkered walnut pistol grip stock with a hard rubber or recoil pad. Straight grip options were also available. Valuation The value of an L.C. Smith Specialty Grade shotgun is highly dependent on a professional assessment of its condition and originality. Refinished parts or non-original features can significantly reduce collector value. Original Condition: A well-preserved, all-original Specialty Grade with significant amounts of original case colors and bluing can be a valuable collector's item. Optional Features: The presence of the Hunter One-Trigger, automatic ejectors, and a beavertail fore-end typically increases the market value. Recent Sales: Examples found on auction sites show a wide range in value, with some in excellent, original condition fetching several thousand dollars or more. For example, a virtually unused, all-original 12ga Specialty Grade with desirable options was listed for over $10,000. For an accurate valuation, it is recommended to consult a certified firearms appraiser or research recent sales of comparable models on reputable auction sites
