Item Details
Very good condition modernized trapdoor rifle. 26" barrel, bore appears to be clean, shiny, and bright with some black marks and good rifling showing some wear. The bluing and finish on the rifle are worn with some pitting and a little surface rust. One piece wooden stock with a darker brown finish with dings, bangs, and scuffs from age and use. It has modern sights, a Williams rear sight and an unmarked front elevated sight. The trapdoor, breechblock mechanism, also appears to be newer. It has a metal buttplate. This is actually one you do not want to get away!! Gun has been gone over by a professional gunsmith. The Springfield U.S. Model 1878 is a variant of the famous "Trapdoor" single-shot military rifle, chambered for the powerful .45-70 Government black powder cartridge. It was a key service weapon for the U.S. Army during the late 19th century. Key Features and History Design: The rifle features a distinctive hinged breechblock mechanism, often called the "trapdoor". The Model 1878 marking appears on the breechblock itself. Ammunition: It uses the .45-70-405 cartridge, which specified a .45-inch caliber, 70 grains of black powder, and a 405-grain bullet. This round was ballistically superior to its predecessor, the .50-70 Gov't. Functionality: As a single-shot weapon, it was eventually superseded by magazine-fed rifles like the Krag-Jørgensen, but the cartridge itself was highly effective and remained popular for hunting large game. Collectibility: Original Model 1878 rifles are prized by collectors for their historical significance and craftsmanship. Modern Use: Original rifles require specific, low-pressure ammunition designed for vintage "trapdoor" actions. Modern high-power .45-70 loads are intended for contemporary strong actions (like Ruger or Marlin lever-action rifles) and are not safe for use in these antique firearms. Availability: Original antique rifles are available through auction sites and specialty dealers and modern replicas are also produced by companies like Uberti.
