A Fine and Rare Texas or Holster Model No. 5 Paterson Revolver, with 7 1/2-Inch Barrel and Varnished

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 508)      

Serial no. 247. .36 caliber percussion, 5-shot cylinder with stagecoach holdup scene, the 7 5/8-inch octagon barrel roll-marked within standard star and snake finials "Patent Arms M'g Co. Paterson, N.J. - Colt's Pt." Round back shoulders to cylinder. Made with blue and case-hardened finish, latter on the frame plate and appears to be on the hammer. Varnished select walnut grips. Serial number markings include 247 on breech end of barrel lug, on bottom of wedge, on back of cylinder, on cylinder turning collar (latter visible when cylinder removed) and on right side of folding trigger. Revolver not disassembled further, but additional numbers will be revealed inside.
Condition: Fine. 20 to 25% blue on barrel, 35% blue on frame and backstrap, traces blue on cylinder, fine cylinder roll scene, balance brown and gray with scattered light pitting. German silver front sight with minor nicks. One nipple broken, the remains still in threaded channel. Minor chip on sighting notch of hammer. Grips with 70 to 75% varnish, light wear, and minor chip each side at juncture with frame below and adjacent to curved inset.

Rare and Important Colt Whitneyville Walker Model 1847 Percussion Revolver, Military Issue, A Compan

Serial no. A Company, No. 11. .44 caliber, 9-inch barrel with German silver blade front sight, top flat of barrel lug roll-marked: Address Sam'l Colt New-York City. Left side of barrel lug marked: A Company No. 11. Right side of barrel lug marked: US/1847, [the numeral 8 stamped upside down as often the case]. Left side of frame marked: A Company No. 11. Front of frame at junction with barrel breech stamped: 11. Cylinder with standard scene and marked: C Com-y No 214. Back of cylinder stamped: 21, indicating the 21st example numbered in their production. Bottom of brass triggerguard assembly marked: A Com-y 11. Bottom of triggerguard inspector marked: P. Back of gripstrap inspector marked: P. Steel backstrap butt marked: C Company No. 11. Right side of brass triggerguard strap, covered by grips, marked: 11. Walnut grips with traces of inspectors cartouches on both sides, WAT in script on right panel. Brass collection number tag marked 9, secured to triggerguard by copper wire.
Condition: Excellent for this model of Colt revolver. Markings generally sharp. Metal showing gray-brown patina overall with scattered pitting, dents and nicks, of varying depth. Some filing on rear of face of barrel lug, to adjust tightness at juncture with frame. Cylinder retaining sharp number markings and approximately 35% thinning scene. Half the cylinder cartouche characters visible of the "Model U.S.M.R." and "Colt's Patent " motifs. Grips with wear and minor chipping at front of each side of butt. Grips with traces of inspector cartouches on both right and left sides. Old replacement T-spring on bottom of barrel to secure loading lever. Action very good.
Notes: Inspector markings on grips rarely observed in the military issue Walker revolvers.

Scarce Colt First Model Dragoon Revolver, from the Second U.S. Ordnance Contract, a.k.a. "The Fluck

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 508)      

Serial no. 2557. .44 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel, single line marking on top of lug reading towards muzzle, "[curved dash] Address, Saml Colt, New-York City [curved dash]." Texas Rangers and Comanche Indian fight cylinder roll scene with "Model U.S.M.R." marking in upper cartouche above serial number; and "Colt's Patent" in lower cartouche. Tiny "2557" within cartouche on cylinder periphery. Single pin safety on breech of cylinder. No number visible on wedge. Tiny "557" on bottom of cylinder pin. Matching tiny "2557" on bottom of frame, triggerguard and buttstrap. Left side of frame with "Colt's/Patent/U.S." located at centerpoint of frame. Tiny "243" on top flat of loading lever lug. Matching tiny number "43" stamped on right side of loading lever spring-fed latch. Inspector letter "P" stamped on bottom at rear of triggerguard, as well as on top flat of backstrap, on cylinder near serial number, and on right side of barrel lug. Triggerguard of trapezoidal shape when viewed from front. V-shape mainspring. Oil-finished walnut grips. Brass gripstraps.
Condition: Very good. Gray and brown patina, wear, scattered nicks and pitting, more pronounced on face of recoil shield, on cylinder pin, on top of projection of frame at juncture with barrel lug, on recoil shield adjacent to hammer, and on hammer. Approximately 20% cylinder scene, worn. Mellow patina to brass gripstraps. No number or inspector cartouches visible on worn grips, with chipping on front of butt. Small repair on bottom of barrel lug at juncture with left side of frame. Old replacement brass front sight blade.
Notes: Though for years identified as a "Fluck" Dragoon, research has indicated that the group of First Model Dragoon revolvers previously so identified are actually from 1,000 of the U.S. government contract (the "second") following purchase of 1,000 Whitneyville-Walker revolvers. See American Rifleman magazine, September 1956

Fine and Rare Early Vine Style Engraved Colt First Model Dragoon Revolver with U.S. Stamping, Made f

Serial no. 5472. .44 caliber percussion cylinder; 7 1/2-inch part round, part octagonal barrel marked on top flat of lug: [bracket] Address Saml Colt New-York City [bracket] reading from breech in direction of muzzle. Colt's/Patent/U.S. in tiny letters stamped on left side of frame. Texas Rangers and Comanche Indian fight cylinder roll scene with "U.S. Dragoons" marking in upper cartouche above serial number; and "Colt's Patent" in lower cartouche. Made for single safety pin on cylinder breech. Number 5472 also on bottom of cylinder pin. V-mainspring. Blued with case-hardened frame, hammer, and loading lever. Silver-plated brass gripstraps and squareback triggerguard. Varnished walnut grips. Early vine style engraved with waved line borders on gripstraps and on triggerguard. Inspector letter G within scroll on bottom of triggerguard strap adjacent to front screw. Inspector letter K to right of forward triggerguard screw. Inspector letter T on right shoulder of triggerguard. Number 472 on bottom of loading lever. No serial number on wedge.
Condition: 97% silver-plating on brass gripstraps. 80% faded blue on barrel. Gray patina, pitting on frame and cylinder, latter with scattered denting and 50% cylinder scene, including traces of Ormsby engraved signature. Double stamping of "Colt's/Patent" frame marking and double stamping of three of numbers on cylinder. Screw reinforcement to mainspring visible on front of triggerguard strap. Old wax applied over varnish to grips, with some wear, nicks and minor chip on front of leflt side of butt. No serial number on wedge.
Notes: Compare with illustrations in R.L. Wilson, The Colt Engraving Book, volume I, pages 25-27, indicating chapter II presence of Paterson style vine engraving on a few early First Model Dragoon revolvers, as well as early Baby Dragoons.

U.S. Ordnance inspector stamping JH within cartouche on left grip panel. The right panel with WAT inspector stamping in cartouche. Individual inspector letter stampings on various parts of J, G and H. 065 stamping visible on bottom of wedge.
Condition: Very good. Gray and brown patina, with scattered pitting more evident on round barrel and cylinder, with scattered dents. Cylinder scene sharp with 80% present. Cylinder safety pins mashed. Grips with light nicks, minor chips at butt and light wear.

Serial no. 16828. .44 caliber percussion, 6-shot cylinder with Texas Rangers and Comanche Indian fight roll scene. 7 1/2-inch part round, part octagon barrel marked "-Address Saml Colt New-York City," with portion of markings' end covered by dovetailed folding leaf rear sight. German silver halfmoon profile front sight blade. "Colts/Patent/U.S." in tiny letters stamped on left side of frame. Blued with case-hardened hammer, loading lever and frame. Plain brass triggerguard strap, and blued steel backstrap. Frame cut for shoulder stock on recoil shield, and with four-screw configuration. Oil-finished walnut grips. Traces of U.S. Ordnance inspector stamping cartouche on left and right grip panels, the right visible with WAT. Individual inspector letter stamping C on left side of barrel lug and on top of backstrap, the letter S on cylinder near serial number cartouche. Matching number 6828 on bottom of wedge and on top of loading lever lug. 6828 written in ink within cutout of grips for backstrap. Steel stock yoke stamped at bottom to rear of clamp aperture with serial nos. 16828/16829. Steel butt clamp stamped on rear surface, visible when removed, 16828. WAT inspector stamping within cartouche on right side of shoulder stock, and MM on left side, both at wrist. Steel buttplate, with matching nos. 16828/16829.
Condition: Very good. Gray and brown patina, with scattered pitting. Most markings sharp. Traces of cylinder scene. Five of cylinder safety pins present, some partially damaged, on breech. Slight bend and scattered nicks on triggerguard strap. Walnut grips with wear, nicks. Shoulder stock with smooth patina, scattered nicks, scratches and stains.

Rare and Historic Engraved Colt Baby Dragoon Pocket Revolver, with Ivory Grips, the Backstrap Inscri

Serial no. 8387. .31 caliber, 5-shot cylinder with early vine scroll engraving. 4-inch barrel with two-line marking "-Address Saml Colt/New-York City-" on top of breech, reading toward muzzle. Serial no. 8387 included on bottom of wedge. Tiny "Colts/Patent" on left side of frame. Early vine scroll and border engraved barrel, frame, cylinder, hammer, and brass gripstraps with fishfin motif on top flat of backstrap. Backstrap script engraved "James L. Corley." Silver-plated gripstraps. Ivory grips. Accompanied by data from Francis B. Heitman, Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army, 1789-1903.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina, scattered pitting, 70% silver to triggerguard strap, scattered dents 50% to backstrap. Mellow patina to ivory grips, minor cracks, primarily at butt. Old repair to cylinder pin at wedge slot.
Notes: Compare with serial no. 8155/., illustrated, p. 29, R.L. Wilson, Colt Engraving. Cylinder pin with cupped tip for loading, thin triggerguard strap shoulders, straight mainspring, round cylinder stop slots, and no sign that the cylinder had factory roll scene applied.

Narrative: James Lawrence Corley is profiled in Heitman's, Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army 1789-1903, pp. 94 and 327. Born in South Carolina, Corley was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy from that state, and graduated July 1, 1846, 40th in his class of 59. His first appointment was as Bvt. 2nd Lt., 6th Infantry (July 1850), his second as 2nd Lt., on May 6, 1851. His third appointment was as 1st Lt., March 3, 1855. Corley's fourth appointment was as Regimental Quartermaster, June 17 to November 27, 1855. His fifth appointment was as Regimental Adjutant, November 27, 1855 to April 29, 1861. On May 4, 1861, Corley resigned from the U.

Deluxe Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver, with 6-Inch Barrel and Ivory Grips

Serial no. 67508/. .31 caliber. 5-shot cylinder with stagecoach holdup roll slcene. 6-inch barrel engraved "Saml Colt" in olde English. "Colts/Patent" engraved on left side of frame. 7508 on loading lever lug and on bottom of wedge, and 508 on bottom of cylinder pin. Finely detailed and shaded Gustave Young shop scroll and border engraved barrel, loading lever, wedge, frame, wolfhead motif hammer and silver-plated brass gripstraps. Scarce weasle head motif on left recoil shield, and smaller head on right barrel lug below wedge. Majority of screws engraved. Finely checkered hammer spur with five dot motif stamping between checkering and scaled top motif. Blued and case-hardened finish, with one piece ivory grips.
Condition: Fine. 60% blue on barrel, 20% on cylinder, with 95% roll scene, tracking lines, light denting on face, and light wear to safety pins. Case-hardened mottling to gray-blue and gray. Scattered patina and pitting. 95% silver on gripstraps, with minor tranish. Mellow patina to grips, slight stain at juncture with left side of frame, and minor shrinkage.

Rare Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, the Ivory Grips Relief Carved with Bust of Helmeted Rom

Serial no. 74045/'. .36 caliber, 6 shots, 7 1/2-inch barrel marked in single line "-Address Saml Colt New-York City." Cylinder with naval engagement roll scene. "Colt's Patent" engraved within cartouche on left side of frame. "4045" on bottom of wedge and bottom of cylinder pin. * stamping on face of cylinder. Scroll engraved by the Gustave Young shop on barrel, loading lever, frame, hammer and gripstraps. Design includes foxhead motif on left side of barrel lug, and wolfhead on each side of hammer. German silver blade front sight on steel base dovetailed at muzzle. Small oval triggerguard configuration. Blued, with case-hardened hammer, frame and loading lever, and silver-plated brass gripstraps. Scarce ivory grips finely relief carved with bearded and helmeted Roman Centurion portrait bust motif in left profile.
Condition: Very good to fine. 80% blue on barrel, traces blue on cylinder, with 85% cylinder scene, light tracking lines. Scattered minor pitting, nicks, wear. 35% case-hardening on loading lever, fading to brown. 85% case-hardening on frame. Hammer fading to brown, with pitting and patina. 40% silver on gripstraps. Grips mellow with surface cracks on butt, small chip from front of right panel at butt. Crack through Centurion helmet and flowing hair. Bright bore with light pitting.
Notes: A review of R.L. Wilson, The Colt Engraving Book, reveals only one image of the Model 1851 Colt Navy with a similar style of Roman Centurion bust carved ivory grips (page 134, serial number 92286, believed a presentation to William H. Vanderbilt).

Rare Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Saddle Ring Carbine, with Low Serial Number 6 and 15-inch Barrel

Serial no. 6. .56 caliber, 15-inch round barrel with octagon breech section, made without maker marking. Half moon front sight of German silver. Folding leaf rear sight, graduated for 100, 300 and 500 yards. 5-shot fluted cylinder with number 6 stamped on breech, and on side of cylinder pin, latter secured by spring-fed button on forward section of left side of frame and by removeable retaining screw on left side of frame behind recoil shield. Small "Colts/Patent" stamped on upper tang, which is integral with frame. "56 Cal" stamped on left side of rear bow of triggerguard. Serial no. 6 also on upper tang and on triggerguard strap, as well as on bottom of barrel breech and on toe of buttplate. Hammer spur carefully cross-hatched by hand, with single line inverted V-border at bottom. Sling swivels on bottom of frame and rear of bottom of lengthy triggerguard strap. Saddle ring mounted on left side of frame. Rare tinned finish. The stock of varnished walnut.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina, with moderate patina and pitting. Traces of tinned finish on steel parts. Stock varnished, with dents and nicks, and with old wax.
Notes: Page 183 of R.L. Wilson, The Book of Colt Firearms, estimates the total of .56 caliber Model 1855 Carbines as only a "few specimens known made in 15[-inch] length." The majority were built in 18- and 21-inches. Estimates were based on research in the factory ledger book records. The hand-built nature of this Carbine is evident in such features as the extensive serial number stampings, as well as the specially factory-inserted piece within the loading lever plunger slot. Further, the Carbine's finish is tinned, rather than the customary blue and case-hardening.

Serial no. 8678. .31 caliber, 5-shot cylinder with roll-engraved stagecoach holdup scene. 3 1/2-inch round barrel with "Address Col. Colt/New-York U.S.A." on top of breech. Nimschke scroll and border engraving on barrel, frame and hammer, with punched dot background. Motifs include intertwined lines and dots on buttstrap, cross-hatching with dots on hammer and cross-hatching on top of hammer. Helmeted dragoon soldier relief carved on left side of grip, right side neatly presentation inscribed "To Henry G. Brant/From/Robt: W. Southmayd,*Geo: C. Bain,/Marshall A. Jones,*Robt: T. Ross,/Tho's F. Fraley,*Rich'd Price Jr.,/Cha's H. Harkness." Mahogany case, lined in maroon velvet, with accessories of brass bullet mold with bright steel sprue cutter marked "Colts/Patent," pocket flask embossed with American eagle and shield and "Colts/Patent, key and projectiles.
Condition: Very good to fine. 98% silver finish, light spots blistering, patina and wear. Tarnish to silver. Cylinder reroll and refinish. Mellow color to ivory, minor staining and two tiny cracks. Case and accessories very good, with light wear, nicks, patina.

Serial no. 147693. .44 caliber, 6 shots, 8-inch barrel marked in single line "-Address Col. Saml Colt New-York U.S. America-." Cylinder with naval engagement roll scene. "Colt's Patent" stamped within scroll and border engraving on left side of frame. "44 Cal" stamped on left shoulder of triggerguard strap. "7593" within cylinder number cartouche, on bottom of wedge and on bottom of cylinder pin. "B" tiny inspector mark on face of recoil shield. "G" on back of barrel lug at juncture with frame pins and "2" at barrel breech. Scroll and border engraved on barrel lug with waved line and dot border at muzzle, the scroll with punched dot background. Matching engraving on frame and gripstraps. Design includes stylized wolfhead on each side of hammer. Silver-plated finish, with gold-finished hammer and cylinder, and blued screws. Checkered ivory grips relief carved with Mexican eagle and snake and cactus, motif within relief oval on left panel.
Condition: Very good to excellent. 90-95% silver on barrel and gripstraps, 85% on loading lever, 50% on frame, 70% mottled and worn gold on cylinder, 85% on hammer. Some blistering of finish. Tracking lines on cylinder and nicks on back end, with safety pins mashed. Wear and scattered patina and few spots pitting, nicks, more pronounced on cylinder. 40% scene remaining. Rare L.D. Nimschke Engraved and Presentation-Inscribed Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver, the Checkered

Serial no. 20399. .36 caliber, 6 shots, 7 1/2-inch barrel marked in single line "-Address Col. Saml Colt New-York U.S. America-." Cylinder profusely scroll engraved, serial no. "399" marked within scroll decoration. "Colt's Patent" stamped within scroll engraving on left side of frame. "36 Cal" stamped on left shoulder of triggerguard strap. "399" on bottom of wedge and "0399" on bottom of cylinder pin. "H" tiny inspector mark on face of cylinder. "B" and "S" tiny inspector marks on fact of recoil shield. "7" on back of barrel lug at juncture with frame pins. Inscription in old English style letters on triggerguard strap, "Alloys seinem Johann." Profusely scroll and bordered engraved by L.D. Nimschke on barrel, loading lever, wedge, cylinder, frame, hammer and gripstraps. Scrollwork intertwined on cylinder. Extensive punched dot background. Design includes stylized wolfhead on each side of hammer. Among Nimschke decorative devices, cross-hatching with dots, batwing, twist treatment of loading lever, and distinctive scrolls and shading. Silver-plated finish, with gold-finished hammer, cylinder and loading lever, and blued screws. Checkered ivory grips finely relief carved with American eagle and shield motif, with arrows and olive branch, on left panel.
Condition: Very good to fine. 95% silver, with tarnish and scattered mottled patina. Traces gold, steel turned gray and brown. Scattered light pitting, more pronounced on face and breech of cylinder, tracking lines between stop slots, the safety pins mashed. Ivory grips fine with mellow patina, sharp carving and checkering. Front left panel of butt with two tiny chips. Minor crack at left rear panel of butt.

"Colts/Patent" on left side of frame. "36 Cal" on left shoulder of triggerguard strap. "5416" on bottom of wedge, and bottom of cylinder pin. "04" on breech of cylinder between two of chambers. 1850 patent date marking in one of cylinder flutes. Blued, with case-hardened lever, hammer and frame. Silver-plated brass gripstraps. Ivory grips, the left panel finely relief carved with Goddess of Liberty bust.
Condition: Fine to excellent. 85% blue on barrel, 70% on cylinder with tracking lines, pitting on breech, with safety pins worn but intact. 80% case-hardening on frame, fading. Traces color on loading lever, turning gray, and on hammer, turning brown. 95% silver, tarnished, on gripstraps. Ivory grips with mellow patina, minor cracks at butt.

Scroll and border late vine engraving on barrel, loading lever, wedge, frame, hammer and gripstraps. Wolfhead motif on each side of hammer. Blued, with case-hardened frame, loading lever, wedge and hammer. Silver-plated brass backstrap and triggerguard;. One piece ivory grips.
Condition: Fine, as refinished. Rerolled cylinder scene. Bright bore with moderate pitting. 85% silver-plating on gripstraps. Grips fine, minor staining and small dent on right panel at butt.

"Not English Make" on left side of barrel and left side of frame, in tiny markings. Nickel-plated finish, with ivory grips.
Condition: Excellent. 98% nickel. Light nicks, primarily on butt. Ivory grips mellow, with slight shrinkage.

Condition: Fine. 85% nickel, spots patina and pitting, primarily on cylinder and hammer. Some peeling on frame at juncture with cylinder. Mellow ivory, with light shrinkage, oil stains and minor cracks.

One of compartments with lid, fitted with turned ivory pull.
Condition: Excellent. 95% nickel, light fading and minor wear, spots pitting at muzzle of barrel and front of cylinder. Grips with 97% varnish, and nicks on right side. Case fine, with light wear, partial relining.

Gold-plated cylinder and sideplate. Nickel-plated barrel and frame, with case-hardened hammer and trigger, and blued screws and cylinder pin. Ivory grips.
Condition: Fine to excellent. 95% finish, nicks, light wear. Gray and blue patina to hammer and trigger, with wear. Grips with mellow patina. Mechanism needs adjustment.
