Just to Reiterate from our terms and conditions: I do my best to estimate the grade/condition of the coins, but please note, unless specifically mentioned in the description, I do not guarantee grade or condition. I DO ALWAYS GUARANTEE 100% AUTHENTICITY, on an immediate buyback including any premium paid. 1837 Hard Times Token Merchants Exchange Wall Street / Build 1827 Burnt 1835 HT-293

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 8 of 201)

Hard Times tokens are privately issued mostly copper large cent sized tokens that were produced from 1833 to 1844. Hard Times Token "Millions for Defence / Not One Cent for Tribute" Merchants Exchange of Wall Street New York "Built 1827, Burnt 1835". The original Merchant's Exchange was located at Wall and William Streets in Manhattan, New York from 1827 until it burned in the fire of 1835. Isaiah Roger's Merchant's Exchange was built on the same site in 1842. The period of economic hardship during Van Buren's presidency (the Panic of 1837) came to be known as the "Hard Times". With America in a deep recession, people began hoarding coins as a safeguard, and small change disappeared from the marketplace. In response, merchants began buying tokens from private mints so they could make change in business transactions.  They were made of copper with a reverse similar to legal U.S. cents. Nice brown color with a bit of corrossion. I estimate the grade to be VF+. It is a rare piece of American history, and a true prize for collectors. Estimated Value $60...more
