Southern Pacific R.R. Shotgun, Poster, & Belt.

Lot # 2536 (Sale Order: 832 of 886)

This is an interesting grouping that includes sawed-off railroad marked 12 gauge hammer gun, leather ammo belt, and the original prototype wanted poster. Serial No. 3598. Manufactured about 1920. Barrel length: 20" cut. Chamber length: 2-1/2". Choke dimension: R - cylinder; L - cylinder. Steel barrels have 50% thin blue with some light rust, number etched on tang. The bore is bright and frosted; and the stock is worn and refinished. Barrels are marked "SPRR N. 22". The gun has a tight lockup, weak springs, a replaced buttplate, and worn action. Early all leather belt with closed toes that holds a full box of 25 paper hull shotgun shells. There are no apparent maker marks on belt but it is of the highest quality and the leather is in excellent shape and the billets are original and have never been altered and is fastened by the early style roller buckle favored in the west before the advent of the California clip point buckle. Poster measures 8-1/2 x 12-1/2. It is interesting in that the three men wanted, which were brothers for the Oregon 1923 train robbery in which four men were killed. Two of which have actual photographs that have been attached to the wanted poster. It is our assumption that this is the original poster that would have been used to make the copies that would have been distributed to local law enforcement because there are two original photographs attached to the poster.
