The Uniqueness Of This Carving Comes From The Use Of Burl For The head Of The Figure, The Knots On the Wood Represents The Hair Of The Man, He Has Carved And Painted White Teeth With White Eyes. His Lips Are Highlighted In Red Paint. He Has A Large Nose And Large Feet With Carved Toes, One Arm Is Missing And The Other Has A Carved Closed Fist. Silver Paint Was Used To Accentuate His Mid Section. This Carving Fully Illustrates The Common Features Found On The Other Figures From This Carvers Body Of Work. The Figure Is In A Seated Position With His Arms On His Belly, Possibly Illustrating He Is Happily Full From Eating. The Figure Features Carved Feet Wearing Boots, His Body Is Painted A Tan Color With Big Belly, His Hands Are Abstract But Carved Including Large Thumbs, His Head Has Crooked Smile Long Nose And Big Beady Eyes, Saw Dust Was Added To The Back Of His Head To Create Hair. The Carvers Clever Use Of Burl Is Important To The Finishing Of Many Of the Heads On These Figures. His Facial Details Are Painted With White And Red Colors. This Bright Colored Hand Stitched Quilt, Comes From Piedmont Region Of North Carolina, The Quilt Has 30 White Squares Of Tulip/Flower Basket Design. It Is Finely Hand Stitched. The Colors Used Are A Reddish-Brown Binding, Followed By A Bluish Green Outer Border, Then 30 White Sq's With Medium To Light Green Flower Baskets, Utilizing The Colors Cheddar And Reddish-Brown For The Petals Of The Tulip. The Quilter Used 3 Rows Of Flower Baskets Going One Direction While The Other Two Rows Go Opposite Direction. We Are Proud To Offer This Investment Quality Folk Art Painting By The Rev. McKendree Robbins Long, Statesville N. C., 1888-1976, A Painter, Poet & Preacher. The Painting Depicts The "Woman In Red" Hugging A Young Boy, Looking Out Over A Garden With Cows, All Sorts Of Birds, Trees, Barn And Houses In Background, All Under A Cloudy Blue Sky With Double Rainbows. This Painting Has Vivid Bright Colors And Has Calming Naive Expression. This Painting On Canvas Is Opposite His Other Works Which Were Apocalyptic In Nature. The Painting Is Marked In Pencil On Back With #s Otherwise It Is Unsigned. Its measurements In Frame Are 35 1/2" X 43 1/2". Condition Is Very Good, There Are 3 Pin Holes When Held To light Also Some Paint Has Begun To Crack In Sky. Frame Is In Very Good Condition. Rev. Long Won His First Award As An Artist At The Age Of 8, Where He Won Best Of Show. He Was A Southern Fundamentalist, And Preached A Fiery Gospel. The Rev. Had Exceptional Schooling And Art Training And In 1921 Exhibited Portrait, Landscape And Family Members In Raleigh, N.C., During The Late 20's Through The early 50's Rev. Long Preached And Painted Little, Then In the 1950's Begun To Paint Again And Begun His Well Known Series Of Paintings On The Book Of Revelations. After His Death 2 Art Exhibits Of His Work Were Held, 1988 At The North Carolina Museum Of Art Entitled "Outsider Art Inside North Carolina" And In 1998 "The End Is Near" At The Visionary Art Museum IN Baltimore.
