VERY RARE HAIMAN DOG RIVER CONFEDERATE ARTILLERY

Lot # 3878 (Sale Order: 876 of 1040)

SABER. Overall 37 3/8". Blade 32". This is a very fine example of classic enlisted light confederate artillery saber displayed at Greene Museum as a Louis Haiman product, which we agree & this is an excellent "as found" example. There is some disagreement whether this is a product of Haiman or Dog River. We believe it to be a product of Haiman but regardless of its mfg., it is a rare & desirable confederate saber. Louis & Elijah Haiman operated a lg. arms manufacturing facility in Columbus, GA. Many Confederate swords previously identified as "Dog River" have actually been attributed to Haiman Bros. CONDITION: blade has a uniform medium gray patina & a couple of minor edge nicks. Blade exhibits an unstopped fuller & scattered file marks. Hilt is brass & very solid. Grip is copper wire wrapped leather. The finish of the leather is mostly flaked however the leather itself is nearly complete. No scabbard. PROVENANCE: From the Greene Museum of Southern History. (02-7013/JS). $3000-5000....more
