Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3025 (Sale Order: 26 of 794)

Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in .44-40

This classic Winchester Model 1873 rifle was manufactured in 1882 and features a round barrel with a German silver blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, the standard markings (correctly no caliber markings), and a smooth forearm and straight wrist stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine with 40% plus original blue finish, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, much of the original case colors on the hammer and lever, loose dust cover, attractive aged patina on the brass elevator, and mild overall wear typical wear of a working gun from the American West. The revarnished wood is very good and has some mild dings and scratches appropriate to a frontier gun. Aside from the loose dust cover, the rifle is mechanically fine. This is a solid representative example of "The Gun that Won the West" with some attractive "frontier" character.

Antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 3026 (Sale Order: 27 of 794)

Antique Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter

Offered here is an early example of the legendary Peacemaker in .45 LC that was manufactured in 1893. In the words of Colt author and expert David Brown, "[T]he Colt Single Action Army .45 was 'the soldier's friend' throughout the remaining years of the Indian Wars in the West. Adopted also with equal enthusiasm by civilians, it was the pet and the 'good right arm' of lawman and outlaw alike on every American frontier of its era" ("The 36 Calibers of the Colt Single Action Army," page 70). The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 4 3/4 inch barrel in .41 caliber, blue finish, and stocks not listed when shipped on August 31, 1893 to famed Denver, Colorado, retailer John P. Lower & Sons. This was a two gun shipment. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top and "45 COLT" on the left side, the frame has the two-line patent dates marking followed by an encircled Rampant Colt, and matching serial numbers appear on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The period one-piece grip is checkered.

Class: Antique

Fine as period retailer re-barreled and replated, retaining 50% plus of nickel finish with a classic smooth dark patina on the balance. The grip is also fine with a repair on the left lower side, typical age lines, attractive color, and crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. A SAA that certainly has the feel and look of a frontier survivor.

Antique Winchester First Model 1873 Carbine

Lot # 3027 (Sale Order: 28 of 794)

Desirable Antique Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Carbine

Manufactured in 1876 as a First Model 1873, this carbine has the desirable "thumbprint" dust cover retained by the integral guide rails on the top of the receiver. The barrel is marked on top with the standard two-line address/King's patent markings, correctly lacks a caliber marking, and is non-factory marked "C.I. 22." on the left near the rear sight, the meaning of which is unknown. The upper tang has the model marking and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a blade front sight, a folding two-leaf rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock stamped "4" on the right of the wrist with a trapdoor carbine buttplate, containing an included three-piece cleaning rod.

Antique Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 3028 (Sale Order: 29 of 794)

Antique Early Production Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver

The Colt Single Action Army Revolver is arguably the most iconic handgun of Americana. In the hands of ranchers, cavalrymen, Native Americans, lawmen and outlaws, the Peacemaker’s legacy was forged out in the hostile American West and continues to gain popularity among today's collectors. Manufactured in 1876, just the third year of production of the iconic Single Action Army. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard one-line address. The left of the frame has the two-line patent dates and the left of the trigger guard is marked "45 CAL". The frame, trigger guard, and back strap all have the matching full serial number, while the cylinder and barrel have the partial matching serial number "8272". The loading gate has the assembly number "1458". It is fitted with the early "bullseye" type ejector rod head and a smooth walnut grip. There are five small "kill" notches in the right front upper edge of the trigger guard.

Class: Antique

Very good, retaining 20% of the original blue and casehardened finishes in sheltered areas with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and a few scattered patches of light surface pitting. There are five added notches in the trigger guard (see above). The grip is also very good with moderate wear and extensive handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A fine early production Colt Single Action Army that makes one wonder what stories it might have to tell!

Antique Colt Model 1877 Lightning Revolver

Lot # 3029 (Sale Order: 30 of 794)

Scarce Documented Long Barrel Ejectorless Antique Colt Model 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1897, the included factory letter with this revolver lists shipment to T.M. Roberts, which is almost certainly a reference to T.M. Roberts' Supply House located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A full page advertisement in the Minneapolis newspaper "The Representative" from 13 October 1897 claims that the previous month the firm sold over 700 guns, and that they have thousands of firearms on hand. It is likely that much of the firms sales were to clients in the American west or those that would soon be heading there, and it is likely this revolver shared a similar fate. It has standard markings including the desirable "COLT D.A. 38" etched panel on the left of the barrel. It is fitted with a blade front sight and sighting groove on top of the frame. It is fitted with a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colts in ovals at the tops. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration as well as the previously mentioned shipping information. Includes two photographs that may be of T.M. Roberts, as well as a T.M. Roberts marked order envelope.

Class: Antique

Fine, showing all the typical signs of a revolver that made its way to the American west, retaining 40% of the original nickel finish and the balance a smooth grey patina. The acid etched panel is lightly visible. The grips are very good with moderate wear and scattered handling marks, typical of a working gun. Mechanically excellent.

Antique Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 3030 (Sale Order: 31 of 794)

Identified Antique Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver with Carved Steer Head Grips

Manufactured in 1894, with the desirable "black powder" frame. The standard two-line address is marked on top of the barrel and "45 COLT" is on the left. The two-line patent date marking is on the left of the frame followed by the Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap, and the loading gate is numbered "1209". There is a factory rework number, "470", stamped below on the arm which corresponds to two places stamped on the left side of the grip straps under the left grip panel. It has the standard blade front and frame top groove sights, and is fitted with a pair of antique ivory grips, the right panel having a relief carved steer head, with "W.O. GILMER" marked in ink underneath (no information on the aforementioned individual was available at this time). The included factory letter confirms the current configuration (grips not listed) as well as shipment to Simmons Hardware Co. in St. Louis on 5 September 1894. The combination of being shipped to Simmons Hardware, a major distributor of guns heading to the American west, and the carved steer head grip, make it very likely this Single Action Army made its way to the western frontier, possibly into the hands of a cowboy or wealthy cattle rancher.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 95% plus of the period factory replated nickel finish with a few scattered patches of minor flaking, most noticeably at the muzzle and on the front strap. The highly attractive grip is also very fine, showing an attractively aged tone and a few scattered hairline age cracks. Mechanically excellent. A Single Action Army that certainly has the feel of a western frontier working gun!

Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Pocket Army Revolver

Lot # 3031 (Sale Order: 32 of 794)

Exceptional Merwin, Hulbert & Co./Hopkins & Allen Large Frame Pocket Army Single Action Revolver

Manufactured from 1876 to the 1880's by Hopkins & Allen, these revolvers show the superior quality and ingenuity that Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolvers have come to be known for. The two-line Hopkins & Allen address and patent markings are on the left side of the barrel and the left side of the frame is marked "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER" and "1873". The serial number is on the right side of the bird's head grip, which has a hole for a lanyard ring. The left side of the grip frame under the grip is marked with the assembly number "405", which is repeated on the barrel lug and rear cylinder face. It is fitted with blade and notch sights and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retains 97% plus of the original nickel finish with some scattered light handling marks and a couple small spots of very light flaking. 75% of the original muted case colors remain on the hammer, 60% on the trigger guard. The grips are also excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Remington Model 1875 Army Single Action Revolver

Lot # 3032 (Sale Order: 33 of 794)

Remington Model 1875 Army Single Action Revolver

Approximately 25,000 Model 1875s were manufactured between 1875 and 1889. They were among the first and most widely used centerfire revolvers in the West and are particularly known for their use by the Indian Police. They were also known as the Improved Army or Frontier Army. The top of the barrel is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A." The front flat of the frame at the breech on the left side is stamped "44," the caliber designation for .44 W.C.F. The revolver features a blade front sight, a frame notch rear sight, the standard web-contoured ejector rod housing, and a fluted cylinder. The serial number is marked on the left side of the grip frame, the loading gate arm, and the trigger guard. Instead of a lanyard loop, the butt has two non-factory empty holes.

Class: Antique

Fine as modified (see above). The frame and barrel retain 80%of the original nickel plating. The cylinder retains 40% of the original finish. The balance has smooth gray and brown patina. There are minor scratches and dings. The grips are very good and have mild handling wear, small marks and scratches, and light edge wear. Mechanically fine. Factory Engraved Gold Plated Winchester Model 1890 Rifle

Lot # 3033 (Sale Order: 34 of 794)

Factory Engraved J. Ulrich Signed Gold Plated Solid Frame Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle with Swiss Buttplate and Factory Letter

This highly attractive early First Model 1890 was manufactured in 1891 and subsequently returned to the factory and engraved by J. Ulrich. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle chambered in .22 Short when received in the warehouse on June 9, 1891, and it shipped the same day. The letter also lists an October 14, 1900, repair and return date for the rifle which falls within the period John Ulrich worked full-time for Winchester and within the period that he is known to have stamped his name on engraved guns until the practice was forbidden with the exception of arms in display cases, on September 1, 1904. The rifle has "J. ULRICH" stamped on the lower tang between the trigger guard and serial number similar to other known Ulrich engraved Winchesters. The rifle also has standard blade front and fixed notch rear sights, the second style barrel inscription, "22 SHORT" caliber marking on the top flat at the breech, the First Model solid frame, and standard markings on the upper tang. The receiver has been fully plated in lustrous gold, fitted with bright nitre blue screws, and features full coverage intricate scroll engraving with finely executed punch dot backgrounds, wavy line borders, flourishes of scroll on the tangs, blank inscription banner on the trigger guard, and standing deer panel scenes. It is mounted with a 1X fancy figured walnut 12 groove slide handle and straight grip stock with matching engraved and gold plated Swiss buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked "806 X," and matching numbers are on the end of the stock (along with "90") and inside of the buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine as factory upgraded and subsequently gold plated. With 60% thinning factory blue finish on the barrel, edge wear, some surface pitting, light scratches, and areas of touched up artificial brown patina near the muzzle. The receiver has 90% gold plated finish with crisp, detailed engraving, some minor edge wear, traces of light pitting under the gold, and mostly dark gray patina on the hammer and trigger. The J. Ulrich signature is clear. The upgraded wood is also very fine with some scattered small dings, and some light edge wear on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive and desirable Factory engraved J. Ulrich signed, gold plated Winchester model 1890, that would be a standout piece and any firearms collection.

English Cased Winchester Model 1906 Slide Action Rifle

Lot # 3034 (Sale Order: 35 of 794)

Extremely Rare and Possibly Unique English Cased Winchester Model 1906 Slide Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter states the serial number was applied on October 6, 1908. It has the standard two line "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JUNE 26, 88. DEC. 6. 92, NOV. 27. 06." marking on top of the barrel in front of the rear sight, followed by "MOD. 1906." in larger letters. The caliber marking "22 SHORT-LONG/OR LONG RIFLE" is on the left side of the barrel at the rear, below the Winchester proofmark. There is also a Winchester proofmark on the frame adjacent to the one on the barrel. A Rampant Lion proofmark appears on the barrel below the caliber marking, on the left side of the frame and at the top left of the breechblock. The Model 30A adjustable rear sight has the "-PAT. JAN. 29. 1901.-" marking. The blade on a dovetail base front sight is marked "PAT. / NOV. 4. 1902." on the right side of the base. The upper tang of the receiver has the standard three line trademark information and the lower tang has the serial number along with a second number "2130" probably added in England. The hard rubber buttplate has the standard "WINCHESTER - TRADE - MARK-" circle in the center. The buttplate screw heads are engraved in a flower pattern, definitely a British treatment. The deep brown leather takedown case has the initials "M.G.B." embossed in the top in black. The case has a leather carrying handle and a plated snaplock. The case is lined with green baize and has an "F. BEESLEY" label in the lid. The label lists extensive claims including "Inventor and Patentee of Purdey's Hammerless Gun". He was located at "2 St James Street, Pall Mall Corner" the heart of London's gun trade. Includes a box of Lesmok .22 Short cartridges and Lyman tang sight with box.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent 98% bright finish remains with a few minor scuffs and dings and the faintest of spotting on the receiver and tangs. The wood is also excellent with scattered light dings. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with some scuffing on the outside corners, tears from the sights on the interior lining, and partially detached handle. There is also light moth damage inside the lid. A rare and desirable English cased Winchester Model 1906 slide action rifle.

Prototype Winchester Model 61 Slide Action Rifle in .22 W.R.F

Lot # 3043 (Sale Order: 44 of 794)

Rare Prototype Winchester Model 61 Slide Action Rifle in .22 W.R.F

The Model 61 was developed by Winchester in an attempt to keep pace with its competitors' hammerless .22 rifles. Model 61s were produced from 1932 to 1963, the magnum variation entered production in 1960, and was only produced until 1963. This prototype example shows just how early Winchester considered chambering the Model 61 in the magnum cartridge. The serial number of this example dates to 1950, and it shows all the standard markings and features of a Model 61 from that period, including, surprisingly, a correct "22 W.R.F." roll mark on the barrel. The front face of the receiver is also stamped "W.R.F." as the standard production models would be later, along with the letters "EX", signifying this example as experimental. It features a beaded blade front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, smooth top of the receiver, and is mounted with a 17-groove flat bottom slide handle and pistol grip stock with a checkered steel buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent as a factory prototype, retains 97% plus of the original blue finish with some light wear on the barrel and magazine from operation of the slide handle. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered very light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
