Each is carved wood with jointed limbs, painted eyes and original painted finish with details; including rhinoceros with painted black spots, open moutn, rope tail, leather ears, swivel head, and carved horn; elephant with swivel head, swivel trunk with spout tip, leather tusks and ears, rope tail, and original purple felt blanket with designs and fringe; giraffe with painted brown spots, leather ears, wooden horns, rope tail (some retouch to legs); and hyena with open mouth, painted stripes, rope tail, one leather ear. Including the Hobo man with painted features including detailed beard stubble and teeth, original costume and cap, leather ears (some craquelure on face); pig with jointed neck and legs, open mouth, painted teeth and eyes, leather ears, curly leather tail, and with original store label from San Francisco store The White House; and goat with swivel head and neck, open mouth, painted teeth, leather horns, ears, beard, and tail (very thickly painted black may be restoration). German Wooden General Store by Mortiz Gottschalk 2200/3200

14"(36 cm.) 29"l. x 13"d. A wooden-framed one-room grocery with Art Nouveau style cornices and trim, has original cream and green painted finish with gilt accents, very fancy cornice with centering faux-clock, an attached shelf on each side wall and 16 spice cabinets on the back wall that center a working back door and two corner niches. There is a matching free-standing counter with gilt medallion that supports an early tin scale, and the store is fitted with antique cans, stoneware wine bottles, wooden ware, and wonderful original wrapped bolts of cotton fabric on the side walls. Excellent original condition with original floor and wall finish (clock face a bit faded). Germany, marked 3124 on the underside, Moritz Gottschalk, circa 1900. The one-room wooden-framed store has original wall and floor papers, front columns with green decorative designs that matching designs on spice cabinet side frames, free-standing counter, and crest. There are 16 spice drawers with name plates, and a center display niche with lattice border. Matching cabinets stand against each side wall with fancy crests, and the store has an early scale and box of weights. Excellent condition, original finish and papers. Well-Furnished German Rooms by Christian Hacker with Christmas Tree and Children 2200/3500

14"(36 cm.) h. x 32"l. x 13"d. The wooden framed room box with flat arched pilasters at the front comprises two rooms, with three windows each having its original wooden balance, and an elaborately-paneled door between the rooms. The rooms have original wall and floor paper with ceiling edging, and are amply-furnished with maple wood pieces from Schneegass & Sohne, including marble-top buffet, hall mirror and two tables, along with upholstered chairs, bed, towel bar, and more. Accessories include bear-skin rug, clock under glass dome, telephone, bed warmer, needlepoint carpet, two fine glass-prism chandeliers, ormolu-framed prints and pewter service and amber glass goblets. A feather Christmas tree stands in the corners with little dolls and toys scattered beneath, and there are four antique bisque dolls including three children happily living there. The room box features two windows at the back with original wooden valences, fancy columns at each side of the front with original lithographed paper trim, interior walls with original paper above wooden wainscoting and edged by border paper at the roof line, patterned floor. A rare set of Eppendorfer & Nacke dining room furnishings is featured in the room along with a pewter service, lithographed prints and statuary. Excellent and original condition of room and furnishings. The room is pencil marked 17/2 on the underside. Christian Hacker, circa 1890.

Early and Very Rare Italian Felt Spanish Lady by Lenci with Superb Costume and Painted Teeth 2000/30

Felt swivel head with elongated strong throat, head positioned to look sideways, strongly-modeled facial features, brown side-glancing eyes with black upper eyeliner and curly lashes, fringed brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with beaming smile and row of painted teeth, stitched ears, black mohair wig with coiled braid decorated with a cluster of felt flowers and a wooden decorative comb with painted designs, very slender elongated body with jointing at shoulders, hips and knees, modeled bent elbows, finger posed to hold guitar. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Lenci, circa 1925 from her salon series which featured several models of Spanish ladies. Value Points: exceptionally well-preserved condition of the rare early doll, with vibrant and fresh colors preserved on costume, enhanced with embroidery applique, with black net shawl, wooden guitar with painted designs, bangle earrings, wooden necklace, fabulous tall blue felt heeled boots.
Wonderful Italian Felt Doll Depicting Actress Pola Negri by Lenci 2000/3000

Felt swivel head with very elongated strong throat, oval-shaped face with pressed and painted facial features, brown-side-glancing eyes with brown encircling eye shadow, painted lashes and brows, accent dots in eyes, accented nostrils, closed mouth with ruby lips, shaded lower lip, painted teeth, black silk fleece hair in centerpart with side braids, spit curls, and back braid, elongated torso, felt arms with separate fingers except two middle fingers sewn together, elongated legs jointed at hips and knees, high-heel posed feet. Condition: generally excellent, one cheek smudge. Comments: Lenci, circa 1925, the model indubitably depicts the early Hollywood actress, Pola Negri. Value Points: very rare early model with gorgeous face, and perfect-preserved coiffure and costume comprising an organdy gown with nine tiers of skirt ruffles at the front extending into an outrageous ruffled train at the back, with applique red poppies on gown and hair, red beaded necklace, earrings, wooden and pom-pom castanets in hands, long pantalets, stockings, red heeled shoes.

Felt swivel head with uptilted face on long slender neck, original darkened complexion, well-defined chin and cheek bones, painted facial features, side-glancing brown eyes with very heavy eyelids, lushly-painted black lashes, black brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with painted teeth, painted spit curls in front of each ear, black felt fitted cap with wide petal frame and applique felt flowers, long slender lady shape, posed seated with molded bent elbows, and jointing at the hips and knees, high heel posed feet. Condition: good, some dustiness to limbs, some color run and moth holes in shawl. Comments: Lenci, from their 165 series of salon dolls, circa 1925. Value Points: rare early model with wonderfully preserved facial painting and elaborate headdress, original costume whose details include original orange bangle earrings, and a wooden fan with painted toreador scene.
The Rare Italian Cloth Portrait Doll by Lenci Depicting Valentino as "The Sheik" 4000/6500

30" (76 cm.) Felt swivel head with firmly-pressed and painted facial features, strongly-defined cheeks, jaw and nose structure, painted brown side-glancing eyes, painted thick brows and lashes, accented nostrils, closed mouth, brown cropped mohair inserted into scalp, elongated torso and jointed limbs, molded bent elbows. Condition: good, some dustiness to face and light costume fading; headdress, yoke and sword not original; one boot tassel missing. Comments: Lenci, mid-1920s, model #560 in their catalog, portraying Valentino in the then current films "The Sheik" and "The Son of the Sheik". Value Points: an extremely rare model with distinctive facial modelling and exceptional detail of original costume, including embroidery, felt and metallic appliques, fabulous high boots, and other accoutrements. Few examples are known to exist.

One-piece felt head and torso with refined slender shape and pose, her head inclined to the right with uptilted chin, side-glancing blue eyes in defined eye sockets, heavily-lidded eyes, brown eyeliner encircles the eyes, grey eye shadow, aquiline nose, closed mouth with painted teeth and two accent dots on bottom lip, blonde mohair wig in long ringlet curls, slender torso with slightly-defined bosom, jointing at shoulders and knees, modeled bent knees, feet posed for high heels. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Lenci, the doll was shown in the 1930 Lenci catalog, model #569 with ideal green gown; the distinctive ringlet curled hair is suggestive of "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford. Value Points: rare early model in fine state of preservation, wearing original shaded-coral organdy gown with multi-tiered ruffles at the skirt and sleeves, with matching felt heeled shoes, silk floral decorations, matching organdy petticoat and hoop skirt, pearls, and holding a little green-eyed kitten on her shoulder.

Italian Felt "Barefoot Winker" by Lenci in Original Costume, with Silver Lenci Button 1200/1500

Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, eyes sculpted to appear as though he is winking with painted blue left eye nearly shut, paitned lashes and eyeliner, "dash" brows, rounded nose with accent dots, closed mouth with accented bottom lip, stitched-on large ears, black fleecy silk hair, jointing at soulders and hips with large hands, flat bare feet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Lenci, the winker model, #121, was introduced during the mid-1920s, and presented in various costume color combinations, always barefoot. Value Points: especially well-preserved with purple felt cap, black jacket, brown pants with tan patches, shirt, belt, red neck scarf, rare early model to find especially in this fine state.
Extremely Rare and Wonderful Italian Felt Googly by Lenci Known as "Autumn" 3000/4000

Felt swivel head with pressed and painted facial features, large round googly eyes in brown painted downcast expression, outlined eyes with curly lashes, slightly-modeled short brows, grey eye shadow, rounded nose with accent dots, "O" shaped closed mouth, red mohair curly wig, jointing at shoulders and hips. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Lenci (brown paper label). Comments: Lenci, the painted eye googlies were introduced in 1931 in a series of six whimsical designs, and are considered extremely rare to find. Value Points: wonderful original condition, with beautiful facial painting, fabulous hair, wearing fresh and crisp original multi-tiered organdy skirt in shades of brown and green to suggest Autumn leaves, with a bountiful cluster of felt leaves and berries cascading down the dress, two coral organdy petticoats, panties, socks, brown felt shoes.
An Outstanding French Bisque Bébé "H" by Halopeau in Fine Early Costume 28,000/38,000

Pressed bisque socket head with plump cheeks, amber-brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows with feathered detail, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1 H (head) 1 (torso and right foot). Comments: Aristide Halopeau, circa 1884, only this one facial model is known from the firm, and few models of the bebe were created. Value Points: among the rarest of the classic-period French beb s, the "H" bebe has very beautiful expression, and finest bisque and painting, original body and body finish, and is wearing a superb antique costume comprising silk dress with maroon velvet trim, matching maroon hooded cape, woven bonnet with feathers, undergarments, brown stockings, and black leather shoes with silk bows.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: A 13 T. Comments: Andre Thuillier, circa 1884, from the early period of his firm's production; few dolls were created each year during this time. Value Points: very rare doll in pristine condition with especially fine quality of sculpting such as well-defined chin, lips and philtrum, superb bisque and painting, original wig lettered "13" on inside, original body and body finish, and wearing possibly-original antique slate blue woolen princess-style dress with brown velvet trim, silk borders and buttons, undergarments, stockings, ruffled lace and silk bonnet, and leather laced boots signed C.P.
Superb All-Original French Musical Automaton "Little Girl with Book and Fan" by Lambert, in Original

20" (51 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet covered platform is a bisque-head girl with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. When wound, the little girl turns her head from the side, nods, and then alternately lifts the feather-fan she holds in her right head, fanning herself, and lifts the book of Fables, with blue velvet and bone cover, as though to read, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, music and motion function well and charmingly. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (head). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with Jumeau bisque head, circa 1888. Value Points: superb all-original condition, the girl wears aqua brocade silk jacket dress with lace trim, and with matching feathered bonnet, matching fan, shoes, undergarments, charming and unusual vignette, and perfectly-preserved under its original glass dome and base.
