Delightful French Bisque Automaton "Bebe Hiding in a Flower" by Roullet & Decamops 3500/5500

11" (28 cm.) opened. Arranged upon a green velvet base is a paper mache flower pot with silk flower petals and green leaves and, hidden inside the petals, a bisque head doll head, torso, and bisque hands that are posed held in front of her face; the head with deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, lushly-painted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, open mouth with double row of tiny teeth, blonde mohair wig. When wound, the doll, who has been hiding inside the flower, slowly rises, the lid rising with her, and her hands held up as though blowing kisses in delight at the pleasure she has created. Condition: generally excellent, functions well. Comments: Roullet Decamps, from their series of similar pieces usually designed with bunnies or kittens, this example with Jumeau bisque doll being quite rare, circa 1890. Value Points: wonderful automaton with very beautiful bisque doll, entrancing depth of blue eyes and perfect bisque hands enhance the scene, original shop label of Charles Hebert of Rouen, specialist in porcelains and crystal in on the base, indicating that the piece was sold in a luxury decorative arts shop designed as a parlor entertainment....more
