Early American Cloth Raggedy Ann by Volland with 1915 Patent Stamp 700/1100

16" (41 cm.) All-cloth doll with flat-dimensional face, brown wool worsted hair, painted eye-whites behind flat shoe-button eyes, tiny one-stroke angled brows, six painted lashes under each eye, outlined diamond-shaped nose, slight smiling line, rosy cheeks, stitch-jointed muslin body with heart inside chest, red and white striped sewn-on stockings, black sewn-on cotton shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Patented Sept 7, 1915 (stamp). Comments: Raggedy Ann from drawings by Johnny Gruelle, by Volland, circa 1918. Value Points: wonderful condition and most endearing expression on the early beloved doll, wearing her original faded blue cotton dress with floral print, apron, bloomers.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Raggedy Andy from the illustrations of Johnny Gruelle, made by Volland, circa 1920. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved condition, the early model Andy wears his original blue plaid shirt with black bow, blue cotton pants with white buttons.

Condition: generally excellent, very slight costume fading. Marks: "I am a Volland Doll, My name is Sunny Bunny, The P.F. Volland Co, Joliet, Ill. Made in USA" (paper hang tag). Comments: Sunny Bunny was designed by Johnny Gruelle, from a character appearing in his storybook tales, this being the second version, circa 1931. Condition: generally excellent, some dustiness to collar and shirt, no hat. Comments: "Little Brown Bear", designed and patented by Johnny Gruelle in 1921, made by Ross and Ross for an original wholesale price of $11 1/20. Value Points: wonderfully-made delightful storybook character is well-preserved, very rare to find.

Standing upon a rose velvet-covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed man with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted features, slightly-parted lips, blonde mohair wig, very slender elongated carton torso and shapely legs, bisque hands, wearing rose satin Marquis costume with gilt metallic trim, ivory satin vest, tri-corn hat, lace jabot and cuffs, and with cigarette holder in his right hand and a hankie in his left hand. Condition: mechanism and music function well, hairline at right side of head. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890 with bisque head by Jumeau, the smoking mechanism operates through a hidden system of internal tubing. Value Points: the Marquis, when wound, turns his head side to side and nods, drawing his cigarette holder to his lips and inhaling, then lifting his hankie toward his face and exhaling, appearing to casually brush away the smoke that actually appears, while music plays. The mechanism is realistic and was highly impressive at its time of production.

Fine French Poupee Toilette in Original Unusual Presentation Box 1100/1600

10" (25 cm.) x 7" box. 3"h. pitcher. A wooden box is beautifully-covered with lithographed papers centered by a gilt-lettered banner "Toilette" and hinges open to reveal an unusual interior that actually forms a toilette table, with set-back lace-edged mirror on the three-sided inside lid flanked by a pair of gilt ormolu candle holders. A nine-piece porcelain toilette service is arranged upon the table top along with various combs, soaps, silk sachets, brushes, and other articles. The "walls" and "floor" are covered with lithographed papers to simulate wall and floor covers, and the table is edged with fine lace to match the mirror frame. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1874. Value Points: rare luxury presentation in its original condition, the contents still tied to table and boards.

Porcelain swivel head with flat-cut neck socket that pivots 90% in a realistic manner, on original porcelain shoulder plate, lightly-tinted complexion, painted blue upper-glancing eyes, black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, early brunette hand-tied human hair wig over lambswool cap and cork pate, softy-stuffed kid poupee body in the classic Rohmer manner with pull-strings in torso designed for seating pose, porcelain arms to above the elbows, wooden ball-joints in knees under kid cover. Condition: generally excellent, body very sturdy and clean, all head, body and limb parts original. Marks: Mlle Rohmer Brevete SGDG (oval stamp on torso). Comments: Leontine Rohmer, circa 1858, the poupee is all-original with body style and head swivel based upon the 1855 and 1858 Rohmer patents. The doll is being sold from its original family estate in Rouen, France, where it has resided for 150 years, along with her trunk and trousseau; Rouen, curiously, is near D’Avranches, France in which the famous poupee, Blondinette, with her trunk and trousseau were located. The poupee’s name is "Suzanne Amaryllis", according to a pencil note "chapeaux de Suzanne Amaryllis" is written on a small box that was hidden in a corner of her trunk. Value Points: impeccably-preserved petite poupee with beautiful expression and porcelain. Suzanne Amaryllis is wearing an outstanding vibrant purple velvet gown with silk satin ribbon trim, along with a matching velvet toque cap, fine lace blouse, undergarments, and pair of woolen purple and red striped stockings and leather slippers. Wonderful French Rose Silk Dress and Bonnet for Bebe Jumeau 1200/1800

15" (38 cm.) overall length. 5" shoulder length. To fit Bebe Jumeau size 10 or 11. Of a very fine rose silk satin with interwoven floral design, the slightly-high-waisted dress has rose silk pleated bretelles centering a bodice with pleated silk jabot flanked by patterned ribbon bands which continue around and through and form a bow at the waist. There are silk and lace ruffles at the sleeves and the slightly-flared skirt has a silk ruffle at the hem. Along with a rose silk bonnet with lavish lace and silk ribbon flounces and gathering. The two-piece gown of fine sheer muslin has an extended length jacket that is fitted on the bodice and then flares over the full skirt. Condition: fair/good, original painted finish with some minor face rubs and flaking on costumes. Marks: Quacky Doodles T.M. Reg. P.F. Volland & Co Pat. Dec.2, 1902, Apl 14, 1903, Design Pat’d Sept 7, 1915 (paper label on Mama’s foot). Comments: Schoenhut, for Volland, 1916, the wooden duck family was issued in conjunction with the publication of the 1916 Quacky Doodles and Danny Daddles Book, illustrated by Johnny Gruelle, which related in rhyme the nighttime activities of toys in a nursery. Included here is Mama Quacky Doodles, Danny Daddles Jr, Baby Quacky Doodles and Baby Danny Daddles. Value Points: rare early 20th-century toys combining the talents of Gruelle and Schoenhut; Mama has her original cotton sunbonnet and Danny Jr. has his original carved wooden top hat.
Very Rare American Mohair Teddy by Hecla 1800/2500

Of champagne-color mohair, the teddy features a swivel head, disc-jointed arms and legs, elongated arms, large feet, felt paw-pads, wide-apart ears, back hump, long snout nose with rust embroidered tip, rust claws, wearing an antique costume of black felt flannel pants with suspenders and red and cream knit stockings. Condition: very good, some typical mohair play wear, one ear re-stitched, nose embroidery worn. Comments: Hecla, the American bear company that existed for one or two years only, 1907/1908, attempting to compete directly with Steiff, created this classic bear. Value Points: extremely rare bear, few examples exist, with charming expression, costume, the bear accompanied its owner, Alice, on her honeymoon in 1908.

Amber golden mohair with lustrous silky finish is the "fur" of the large teddy, with unusual square-shaped face with centering round muzzle, wide-apart stitched ears, clear glass eyes with black pupils, brown embroidered nose, mouth and claws, very plump torso and limbs, disc-jointed arms and legs, felt paw pads with brown embroidered claws, with antique collar and bow tie. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: British, WWI era, c. 1916, possibly Farnell. Value Points: the grand size accentuates the perfectly-preserved condition of the wonderfully-expressive bear.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Beloved Belindy, the first model produced by Volland, c. 1926, from the character in his book, Beloved Belindy, published in that year. Value Points: very rare-to-find earliest model of Belindy in wonderfully-preserved condition, having original dress with red cotton bodice and flowered skirt, organdy collar and apron with crochet lace edging, bloomers, and bandana, and hand-painted features.
