Standing upon a rose velvet-covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed man with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted features, slightly-parted lips, blonde mohair wig, very slender elongated carton torso and shapely legs, bisque hands, wearing rose satin Marquis costume with gilt metallic trim, ivory satin vest, tri-corn hat, lace jabot and cuffs, and with cigarette holder in his right hand and a hankie in his left hand. Condition: mechanism and music function well, hairline at right side of head. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890 with bisque head by Jumeau, the smoking mechanism operates through a hidden system of internal tubing. Value Points: the Marquis, when wound, turns his head side to side and nods, drawing his cigarette holder to his lips and inhaling, then lifting his hankie toward his face and exhaling, appearing to casually brush away the smoke that actually appears, while music plays. The mechanism is realistic and was highly impressive at its time of production....more

Fine French Poupee Toilette in Original Unusual Presentation Box 1100/1600

10" (25 cm.) x 7" box. 3"h. pitcher. A wooden box is beautifully-covered with lithographed papers centered by a gilt-lettered banner "Toilette" and hinges open to reveal an unusual interior that actually forms a toilette table, with set-back lace-edged mirror on the three-sided inside lid flanked by a pair of gilt ormolu candle holders. A nine-piece porcelain toilette service is arranged upon the table top along with various combs, soaps, silk sachets, brushes, and other articles. The "walls" and "floor" are covered with lithographed papers to simulate wall and floor covers, and the table is edged with fine lace to match the mirror frame. Condition: generally excellent. Porcelain swivel head with flat-cut neck socket that pivots 90% in a realistic manner, on original porcelain shoulder plate, lightly-tinted complexion, painted blue upper-glancing eyes, black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, early brunette hand-tied human hair wig over lambswool cap and cork pate, softy-stuffed kid poupee body in the classic Rohmer manner with pull-strings in torso designed for seating pose, porcelain arms to above the elbows, wooden ball-joints in knees under kid cover. Condition: generally excellent, body very sturdy and clean, all head, body and limb parts original. Marks: Mlle Rohmer Brevete SGDG (oval stamp on torso). Comments: Leontine Rohmer, circa 1858, the poupee is all-original with body style and head swivel based upon the 1855 and 1858 Rohmer patents. The doll is being sold from its original family estate in Rouen, France, where it has resided for 150 years, along with her trunk and trousseau; Rouen, curiously, is near D’Avranches, France in which the famous poupee, Blondinette, with her trunk and trousseau were located. The poupee’s name is "Suzanne Amaryllis", according to a pencil note "chapeaux de Suzanne Amaryllis" is written on a small box that was hidden in a corner of her trunk. Value Points: impeccably-preserved petite poupee with beautiful expression and porcelain. Of champagne-color mohair, the teddy features a swivel head, disc-jointed arms and legs, elongated arms, large feet, felt paw-pads, wide-apart ears, back hump, long snout nose with rust embroidered tip, rust claws, wearing an antique costume of black felt flannel pants with suspenders and red and cream knit stockings. Condition: very good, some typical mohair play wear, one ear re-stitched, nose embroidery worn. Comments: Hecla, the American bear company that existed for one or two years only, 1907/1908, attempting to compete directly with Steiff, created this classic bear. 16" (41 cm.) All cloth doll with flat-dimensional face, rounded black shoe-button eyes on painted eye whites, short angled brows, six lashes under each eye, black-outlined red nose, thin line mouth with gentle smile, brown worsted wool hair, stitch-jointed body with heart on torso, red and white striped sewn-on stockings with black sewn-on shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Patented Sept 7, 1915. Comments: Raggedy Ann by Volland, early 1920s model, from designs by Johnny Gruelle. Value Points: well-preserved condition of the early model, wearing her original paisley print dress in shades of brown, cream, purple and green, with white pinafore and bloomers....more
