Two American Cloth Handmade Topsy-Turvy Dolls 300/400

12" (30 cm.) Each topsy-turvy has alternate doll heads posed on opposite ends of a muslin torso, and is designed so that the full-length costume which accompanies each head will hide the alternate head. On the larger example, each head is double-sided depicting different moods for each doll; the black doll with embroidered features, and the white doll with inked features. The smaller example features simplistic painting of features on each doll. Two Early 20th Century American Topsy-Turvy Dolls in the Studio Manner 600/900

9" (23 cm.) and 13". Each topsy-turvy has alternate doll heads posed on opposite ends of a muslin torso, and is designed so that the full-length costume which accompanies each head will hide the alternate head. When the doll is flipped, the alternate "doll" is revealed. One topsy-turvy has sateen heads with daintily embroidered facial features, including black-complexioned child wearing red cotton dress, and white-complexioned child in striped red and white dress with lace trim and matching cap; the other topsy-turvy is a petite size with painted features. Comments: from the Babyland Rag Series of Horsman, the dolls were advertised as having "life-like" faces, the Dutch boy and girl, named Jan and Greta, were offered as a premium for selling subscriptions to Children's magazine in 1908, and the third doll wears rare costume of Quaker Maid. Condition: generally excellent, unplayed with. Marks: Bye Bye Kids Strictly Sanitary (front torso mark, and separate stamp "Old Mammy"). Comments: Bach Brothers of New York advertised a complete line of cloth dolls in a 1909 issue of Playthings; the costumes and style clearly intended to emulate the popular Babyland Rag line of Horsman.
